Chereads / The Heart In The Shadows / Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

"Are you serious girl? Zion Clark?" Hallie yells with a surprised look on her face. I do not know if the look of surprise on her face is that of good or that of bad.

"Yes, can you imagine? Dad literally wants me to throw myself in his arms like some desperate lady in need of love." I say shaking my head and burying my face in my palms. Hallie scoffs and shoves my shoulder.

"Come on Rachel, if you ask me, this sort of is an opportunity." Hallie says with a small shrug. Why am I not surprised? It is typical Hallie, she will always pick the hot boys over anyone.

"Do not look at me like that Rachel." Hallie chokes out a small laughter and shoves my shoulder again. "You know what I mean, it is Zion Clark we are talking about here, hottest guy in the city, not just hottest but also richest guy in the city. What more could you want Rachel?"

I scoff and push Hallie off my bed. I can not believe my own friend can say such a thing.

"Nobody gets it! I do not care if Zion Clark is the richest man or the hottest man to ever exist. Infact it is that bad that if he is the only man on the planet, then I would rather stay single for the rest of my life than marry him." I snap at Hallie who just raises her hand in mock surrender.

Whatever.

I lay flat on my bed and shut my eyes close, no one gets it because no one knows what really transpired between I and Zion, not even my best friend knows and I would like to keep it that way. My relationship with Zion is a complicated one.

"What is up with you though? I thought you and Zion used to be childhood friends?" Hallie asks with a confused look on my face. I roll my eyes and reply her "People do not stay friends forever. Now enough of the Zion talk please. I am already frustrated, talking about him makes me frustrated the more." I say.

Hallie nods her head and a mischievous smirk appears on her face. Okay, what does she have planned now?

"How about you and me? Go for a little clubbing together?" Hallie winks at me.

I need it actually, I need to clear my head and a few drinks should do the job. I do not want to spend another minute in this house with dad. Especially because I know he will keeping talking about me marrying Zion, until I agree.

"Okay, just a few drinks. You know I have work tomorrow?" I say to her. Hallie nods her head beaming excitedly. I smile at her and we change into slutty outfits, that is all Hallie's idea anyways.

We step out of the house and Hallie drives us to the club with her car. The drive is quiet and i actually love that she understands me and knows I am not in the mood for long talks.

Hallie pulls the car into a stop in front of the club. She flashes VIP tickets in my face and I roll my eyes at her, Hallie has always been a clubber, she always seizes the slightest opportunity to party her life away.

We step into the club and the loud music blaring from the DJ speakers hits me, I sigh and follow Hallie's lead not after she stops to greet a few familiar faces of course. That is what happens when you have an overly social friend.

We settle down at the bar and the bartender serves me a bottle of tequila and a shot glass. I pour the liquid into the shot glass and take a gulp at a go.

I smile and turn to Hallie, she also has a smile on her face.

"How do you feel baby girl?" She yells because of the loud music. I nod my head and break into a wide grin.

"I feel good." I yell back.

"I am glad you feel a lot more livelier." Rachel says. She pauses to point at a direction of a guy leaning on the wall and staring at us, well staring at me actually. His gaze on me makes me feel very uncomfortable.

"Look at him, is he not cute?" Hallie asks.

"I guess." I mumble with a small shrug. I take my eyes off him hastily and although I can still feel his gaze burning right through my skin.

"I think he likes you." Hallie says chuckling. I roll my eyes and gulp another shot down my throat.

"More like he likes my body." I mumble.

"Well fair enough. Anyways, I will give you guys space." Hallie says. I want to protest but she just blows me a kiss and wanders off into the crowd of people on the dance floor.

I release a heavy sigh and watch the guy from earlier walk towards me. Oh crap.

"Hey beautiful." He says settling down on the stool that Hallie was just sitting on. I force a smile on my face and nod my head at him as a form greeting. I catch him staring at my thighs and licking his lips. It disgusts me, I snap my head towards another direction and to my uttermost surprise, I see no one other than the man himself, Zion Clark sitting at the far end of the stool with a girl I do not seem to recognize. His hands are on her waist and he smiles at everything she says. I catch her leaning closer to him and their faces are only a few inches apart.

I grit my teeth and clench my fist as I suddenly feel anger course through my veins. I can not believe that this is the same man dad wants me to marry. This same man that plays around with women like they are some kind of item.

I can no longer take the sight of Zion, I rise to my feet and storm out of the club.
