Chapter 1 - THE BOY CALLED ETHAN.

Ethan Carter used to dream big. He'd imagine a future bursting with joy, love, and the kind of success that always seemed right around the corner. But life has a way of teaching hard lessons, and he found out, maybe too young, that dreams can crumble just as easily as they're built.

It was a warm afternoon, and Ethan waited at the airport, feeling excited. His parents were finally coming home from their trip, and he couldn't wait to hug them, smell his mom's familiar perfume, and feel that comforting sense of home. The sun was shining on the polished floor, making everything seem hopeful. But as more time passed and their flight didn't show up, a knot of worry started forming in his stomach.

The news hit like a punch and it was about a plane crash in the mountains. For a fifteen years old Ethan, it was as if the world suddenly shifted out of focus. His parents, the two people he relied on most, were gone. Their laughter, their voices, and everything familiar about them had vanished in an instant, leaving only memories behind.

The funeral was a blur, and afterward, their family home felt empty and haunted, weighed down by grief and growing debts. The house that had once been alive with warmth and comfort quickly turned cold and hollow. Although relatives had assured him they'd be there, those promises faded, and soon Ethan was left to face a harsh reality alone. The dreams he once had of becoming a doctor or an engineer seemed like a lifetime away as he found himself living on the streets, a world away from the life he'd once imagined.

As dusk fell, the streets morphed into a daunting landscape filled with shadows. Ethan's days turned into a monotonous cycle of survival. His bed became a thin cardboard mat tucked into a secluded alley, and his blanket was a tattered old coat that offered little protection against the cold. Hunger gnawed at his insides, and the world outside became a cacophony of distant laughter and flashing lights that seemed to mock his existence.

He quickly learned that survival came at a cost. He often scoured trash cans for scraps, exchanging uneasy glances with the other homeless individuals who occupied the same corners. Each day was a test of endurance and strength, with new challenges lurking around every corner. Ethan discovered the art of invisibility, how to blend into the background, to go unnoticed, to shield himself from the harsh judgment of passersby.

The town he once knew now felt strange and unfamiliar. He felt like a shadow of the boy he used to be. Walking through the school hallways, where he once laughed with friends, now felt like running through a maze of stares and whispers. The laughter of his old classmates echoed in his mind, feeling more like a painful reminder than anything else.

"Look, there's the homeless kid!" they would shout, their voices dripping with disdain. "What a loser!"

The bullying he faced became a daily torment, a reminder of how far he had fallen. But in the depths of his despair, Ethan's spirit flickered like a candle in the darkness. He didn't want to be defined by his circumstances. Each night, as he lay on his makeshift bed, he would close his eyes and dream of a better life. He envisioned himself in college, books in hand, surrounded by peers who saw him for who he truly was, not the label society had placed upon him.

During the day, he found solace in the public library. There, among the dusty shelves, he lost himself in worlds far removed from his own. The characters he met in the stories inspired him to be like those heroes who faced insurmountable odds and emerged victorious. He devoured tales of triumph over adversity, his heart swelling with a sense of hope.

"Maybe one day," he would whisper to himself, "I'll be one of them."

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Ethan held onto a glimmer of hope, a stubborn resolve to rise from the ashes of his past. He had no idea what the future held, but he was determined to find out.

In the shadows, he encountered an older man named Sam, a veteran who had been living on the streets for years. Sam became an unexpected ally, sharing stories of his struggles and instilling in Ethan a sense of resilience.

"Kid," Sam would say, his voice gravelly yet warm, "the world may have turned its back on you, but don't you ever let it take away your spirit. Keep fighting. There's light at the end of the tunnel."

Ethan clung to those words like a lifeline. Every morning, he would rise with renewed determination, knowing that he could not let his dreams die in the darkness. The weight of his struggles pressed heavily upon him, but deep inside, he refused to be extinguished.

As he lay on the cold concrete, staring up at the stars, Ethan made a silent vow: he would not be a victim of circumstance. He would find a way to turn his dreams into reality, to rise above the challenges that threatened to engulf him. Hope flickered within him, fragile yet unwavering, a testament to the strength of the human spirit.

Little did he know, his journey was about to take a turn that would alter the course of his life forever.
