Chapter 79 - Sweet Scent

The Botanical Garden at Riverstone University's Campus was more than just a serene retreat; it was a hub for budding Pokemon trainers and enthusiasts, particularly those with an affinity for Grass-types. Equal parts nursery and research center, the garden was teeming with life. Pokemon and plants thrived in harmony, creating an atmosphere so vibrant it felt almost magical.

Trainers often left their Grass-type Pokemon here, knowing they would be well cared for among the abundant greenery. The garden wasn't just a sanctuary—it was a proving ground for the Berry Club, a group of trainers dedicated to cultivating rare berries, exploring botanical secrets, and strengthening their bonds with Pokemon.

It was also the last place John expected to find himself.

The low whine of an electric motor cut through the calm morning air as John sped down the campus paths on his Mach Bike. The late start was nothing new—punctuality wasn't exactly his strong suit.

He arrived at the garden in his usual chaotic fashion, skidding to a stop just short of a decorative planter. A few club members nearby turned to look, but most were too busy tending to saplings, sorting berries, or taking notes on cultivation techniques to notice his dramatic entrance.

"Late again, huh?" a cheerful voice called out.

John turned to see Anna, her hands on her hips and a teasing smile playing on her lips. Beside her, a bright-eyed Bulbasaur stood with a vine extended, offering him an Oran Berry.

"Let me guess," Anna continued. "Got stuck behind one of Professor Scarlett's lectures again?"

John smirked, taking the berry from Bulbasaur and giving it a polite nod. "Something like that."

Anna crossed her arms, clearly unconvinced. "Right. So, what brings you to the garden today? Finally decided to take berries seriously?"

"Not exactly," John admitted, pulling a pouch from his bag. "I need advice on growing rare berries. The stuff I've tried so far isn't cutting it."

Anna tilted her head, intrigued. "Rare berries? That's not an easy fix. Most of the advanced methods are either trade secrets or require specialized tools we don't have access to."

"Figures," John muttered, shoving the pouch back into his bag.

"Don't give up so quickly," Anna said, her tone softening. "There is one thing I've heard of, though. It's not exactly… scientific, but some trainers claim it works."

John raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening."

"There's this move called Sweet Scent," Anna explained. "Apparently, if you expose rare berries to it over time, it can speed up their growth and increase their yield."

John blinked, skepticism written all over his face. "Sweet Scent? That sounds like something someone made up after too many Leppa Berry cocktails."

Anna laughed. "Hey, I'm just the messenger! But think about it—what's the harm in trying? Worst-case scenario, you waste a little time. Best-case, you've got a new trick for your rare berry farming arsenal."

"Alright," John said, relenting. "But how am I supposed to teach Sweet Scent to one of my Pokemon?"

Anna's grin widened. "Lucky for you, I've got the perfect teacher." She gestured to her Bulbasaur. "And I'm guessing you've got a Smeargle hidden somewhere in that bag of tricks?"

John pulled out a Pokeball with a faint smile. "You know me too well."

Anna knelt down beside Bulbasaur, giving it a pat. "Alright, buddy, show John how it's done. Use Sweet Scent!"

Bulbasaur nodded, its bulb glowing faintly before releasing a soft pink mist that wafted through the air like a delicate perfume. The fragrance was intoxicatingly sweet, drawing the attention of every nearby Pokemon.

John held out Smeargle's Pokeball. "Alright, buddy. Time to get to work. Use Sketch!"

Smeargle emerged in a flash of light, its tail-tip glowing as it studied Bulbasaur's mist. With swift, precise movements, it began mimicking the move, swirling its tail in a dance-like motion until the pink haze matched perfectly.

"Done," John said, crossing his arms.

Anna whistled, clearly impressed. "Man, Sketch is such a cheat code. If I had a Smeargle, I'd be unstoppable. You know, I really should charge you for this kind of tutoring."

John chuckled. "I'll add it to my tab. Thanks, Anna. You might've just saved my semester."

Anna straightened up, brushing dirt off her jeans. "Anytime. Just make sure you don't forget who helped you when you're swimming in rare berries."

As John turned to leave, Anna called after him, her voice taking on a mischievous edge. "Oh, and don't skip the Forest of Evergrowth trip next month! There's a rumor about an Enigma Berry tree out there."

John froze mid-step. "An Enigma Berry tree?"

"That's what I heard," Anna said, grinning. "Might be worth your time, don't you think?"

John's mind raced. Enigma Berries were legendary for their mysterious properties and exorbitant market value. If the rumors were true, this was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.

"Alright," he said, turning back. "Count me in."

As he rode away, the scent of Sweet Scent still lingered in his thoughts. Rare berries, an Enigma Berry tree, and a chance to outdo every trainer at Riverstone? This trip just got a whole lot more interesting.
