A glance at Magikarp's stats, however, quickly soured his enthusiasm. Not only did it have no IVs, but it also scored zero in two categories. Great, just what I need—a total dud. Sighing, John released it back into the water, deciding it wasn't worth the Poké Ball. 'I'd rather save it for something with potential.'
Moments later, a loud shout came from across the lake. "The pond bully is here!" someone exclaimed, and Mark quickly began packing up, closing the parasol and grabbing their bags.
'What's that about?' Before John could inquire, a sudden "Froakie!" signaled the arrival of a notorious Froakie, who leaped from a nearby tree, releasing bubbles like tiny missiles toward the fishing Trainers. Some scrambled to protect themselves while others ran for cover, their Pokémon dazed by Froakie's rapid assaults. One determined Trainer fought back, sending out a Cacturne for a showdown.
"Cacturne, use Pin Missile!" the Trainer ordered. But Froakie, quick on its feet, dodged the attack, landing a well-timed Pound that sent the Cacturne reeling into a nearby tree, knocked out. 'That Froakie looks like trouble. I've seen it wreak havoc before, but it's impressive how it handles those battles.'
Undeterred, the Trainer threw another Poké Ball, releasing an Elekid. "Use Thunder Shock!" he commanded, only for Froakie to counter with Bubble Beam. The attacks collided in mid-air with a loud bang, but Froakie was faster, darting through the smoke and landing another powerful Pound that downed Elekid with ease. 'Wow, that Trainer really underestimated it. You can't just rush in without a plan.'
Watching the Trainer retreat in defeat, Mark chuckled, explaining to John that this Froakie had become famous as the "pond bully," known for harassing Trainers but never seriously harming them. It was simply too strong for most, and too elusive to catch. 'So it's a bully, huh? Seems like a challenge worth taking on.'
"Want me to give it a shot?" Mark offered, looking a bit unsure. "I'm not confident, but we could always make a run for it if things go south."
'No way am I letting this opportunity slip.' "No need," John replied, getting up and tossing a Poké Ball into the air, releasing his own Pokémon in a burst of light.
"Torchic!" The little fire-type flared with fierce energy, ready for a face-off.
