The crimson bird cloaked in flames plummeted through the air like a falcon targeting its prey. The move Lock-On had sealed Swellow's fate. In the eyes of Blaziken, the falcon, Swellow wasn't a rival—just another bird to be taken down.
"Dodge with Quick Attack!" Norman called out, his voice calm but firm.
Swellow had wanted to use Brave Bird, the attack that defined its dominance in the skies. But its trainer's command came first. Obeying without hesitation, it turned into a streak of light, narrowly avoiding Blaziken's blazing Flame Charge and climbing higher into the air.
"Bounce! Follow it!" John ordered, his tone confident.
Despite being a flightless Pokemon, Blaziken had an arsenal of aerial maneuvers. With a mighty leap, it launched itself skyward, almost defying gravity. Swellow attempted to create distance, but Blaziken's powerful legs propelled it faster and higher. The battlefield's ceiling acted as an unspoken limit, hemming Swellow in.
"Air Cutter, now!" Norman snapped.
Swellow whipped its wings, sending sharp gusts of air toward its opponent. The attack crackled as it cut through the air, aiming to halt Blaziken's ascent. But John was ready.
"Overheat! Give it everything!"
With a deafening roar, Blaziken transformed into a blazing fireball. The Air Cutter attacks dissolved as they hit the fiery inferno. There was no stopping the collision. With a bone-rattling explosion, Blaziken's Overheat struck true, engulfing Swellow in flames.
As the smoke cleared, Blaziken landed gracefully, rolling to John's side, its fighting spirit unshaken. Swellow, however, tumbled from the sky, its charred body hitting the ground with a dull thud.
Jasmine, acting as referee, raised her voice. "Swellow is unable to battle. Blaziken wins!"
Norman frowned as he recalled Swellow to its Pokeball. "You've gotten better, John. This battle has been anything but easy." He reached for his third Pokeball, the tension in the air thick enough to cut. "But the real challenge starts now."
A flick of his wrist, and Norman's trump card emerged. A gorilla-like Pokemon with a pink pig nose and a mane of white fur appeared. It lazily scratched its chest, exuding an air of indifference. But anyone who knew this Pokemon understood its lethargy masked overwhelming strength.
Slaking.
"So, the boss finally arrives," John muttered, his eyes narrowing. After seeing what Norman's Kangaskhan and Swellow could do, his expectations for Slaking were sky-high.
Norman patted Slaking's arm. "Had enough rest? Time to fight. Don't worry; we'll go fishing after this."
John blinked. "Fishing? Really?"
Slaking stretched with a yawn, its movements sluggish but deliberate. Then it stood, cracking its knuckles and looking at Blaziken with a lazy but focused gaze.
"Focus Punch! Let's go!" Norman commanded.
Slaking raised its fist skyward, light blue energy swirling and condensing around it. The power was palpable, the sheer force making the air hum. John watched intently, his breath catching. Even Blaziken tensed, ready to dodge at any moment.
But Slaking didn't charge. Instead, it swung its fist downward into empty space.
"What's going on?" John murmured.
A second later, the world erupted. Blinding white light consumed the arena, forcing John to shield his eyes. The ground trembled violently as a deafening roar echoed through the battlefield. When the light faded and the dust settled, John's jaw dropped.
The arena was unrecognizable. A scorched path stretched from Slaking's feet to the far wall, which now sported a massive, smoldering hole. Blaziken lay embedded in the rubble, unconscious.
Jasmine's voice trembled as she announced, "Blaziken is unable to battle. Slaking wins."
John stared at Slaking, then at the devastation. "That… that wasn't even a direct hit. How?"
Norman smirked. "Slaking's strength is legendary. It's why trainers across Hoenn fear it. But don't worry; you're doing great. Let's see how your next Pokemon fares."
John took a deep breath, clutching one of his Pokeball. "Alright, let's finish this."
