Maya's phone rang just as she turned the doorknob. She reached into her bag to retrieve it. A smile spread across her face when she saw the caller ID. She answered the call and brought the phone to her ear.
"Dalton," she softly called his name through the phone.
"How are you doing tonight, Maya?" Dalton's calm, soothing voice resonated in her head, providing a comforting presence despite the miles that separated them.
Maya shut the door behind her before answering, "I'm good, and I miss you." Her voice dropped to a lower tone.
"I miss you too," Dalton replied, making warmth rush through her.
"Hope you don't forget to eat," Dalton said as Maya navigated her way through the living room, heading toward the basement.
"Don't worry, I'm not starving myself," Maya responded, a hint of annoyance in her tone. She felt tempted to roll her eyes. Dalton always asked her this, and it was getting annoying.
