Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

3

The following day at Aetherhold Academy began with an air of anticipation. Whispers about the mysterious Shadow Sovereign spread like wildfire, and students eyed one another suspiciously, half-expecting an ambush during morning assembly. Caelum, however, strolled through the halls with a carefree attitude, a stark contrast to the rising tension around him.

"Did you hear? They say the Shadow Sovereign is planning to eliminate all the bad guys in the kingdom!" one student exclaimed, clutching a scroll as if it were a holy relic.

"Who's left for him to take out?" another replied. "At this rate, we'll all be living in fear of our own shadows!"

Caelum chuckled to himself, leaning against a wall as he listened to their exaggerated tales. *Little do they know, the only thing they should fear is tripping over their own feet,* he mused.

---

After assembly, Lila found Caelum loitering near the fountain, a playful grin plastered on his face as he tossed breadcrumbs to the birds.

"Caelum, you're incorrigible!" she scolded, hands on her hips. "We're supposed to be studying, not feeding the pigeons!"

"Ah, but they need love too!" Caelum shot back, attempting to charm her. "Besides, studying is for nerds. I'd rather be a pigeon whisperer!"

Lila rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. "You're impossible. But fine, if you insist on being useless, you can help me carry books to the library."

"Books? My arch-nemesis!" Caelum gasped dramatically, clutching his chest as if mortally wounded. "The horrors of academia!"

Lila laughed, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward the library. "Come on, or I'll tell everyone you cried during a history lesson!"

---

As they approached the library, Caelum spotted a group of students gathered around a bulletin board, their expressions a mixture of shock and excitement. Curious, he and Lila wandered over.

"What's going on?" Caelum asked, peering over the crowd.

"The academy is hosting a magic tournament!" a student exclaimed, practically bouncing with enthusiasm. "And guess what? The winner gets a massive prize—500 gold coins!"

"500 gold coins? That's enough to buy a lifetime supply of bread!" Caelum exclaimed, his eyes lighting up with the thought. "Or perhaps a new pair of shoes!"

Lila nudged him playfully. "You could buy a new book, you know."

"Books? Nah, I prefer my life as a well-fed pigeon," he replied with a smirk.

Lila sighed, but there was a glint of excitement in her eyes. "We should enter! I want to prove that I can take on anyone!"

"Count me in!" Caelum said, unable to resist the allure of competition—and the chance to show off a little. *Besides, it could be a perfect opportunity to eliminate any competition without anyone suspecting a thing.*

---

The day of the tournament arrived, and the academy's courtyard buzzed with energy. Colorful banners fluttered in the breeze as students gathered, each vying for glory and the chance to claim the prize. Caelum stood with Lila near the registration desk, his usual carefree demeanor replaced by a focused intensity.

"Remember, no one can know about your true power," he reminded her, the weight of his own duality pressing on him. "Play it cool, okay?"

"Got it," Lila replied, her expression serious. "But if we get eliminated early, I'll be so embarrassed!"

"Just don't trip over your own spells, and you'll be fine," Caelum teased, making her laugh nervously.

As the first matches began, Caelum watched intently, noting the strengths and weaknesses of his fellow competitors. A few seemed promising, but most were far from challenging.

"Next up, we have a surprise challenger!" the announcer declared, a glint of excitement in their voice. "The Shadow Sovereign!"

The crowd gasped, murmurs of shock rippling through them. Caelum's heart raced at the thought of competing against himself. *What a conundrum!* He glanced at Lila, who was staring at him with wide eyes.

"Wait, you're not really—" she started, but he shushed her.

"I'll take care of it," he promised, stepping forward and pretending to look as confused as everyone else.

---

As Caelum stepped onto the arena, he could see the other competitors eyeing him with a mixture of fear and admiration. He took a deep breath, channeling his Shadow Sovereign persona while keeping his façade intact.

"Who dares to challenge the Shadow Sovereign?" he called out, his voice dripping with dramatic flair.

One brave soul stepped forward, brandishing a sword. "I'll show you what real magic is!" he shouted, confidence radiating from him.

Caelum rolled his eyes internally. *Is he serious?*

With a wave of his hand, he summoned a shadow that wrapped around the challenger's sword, yanking it from his grip and sending it flying into the audience, where it embedded itself harmlessly into a tree.

The crowd gasped in unison.

"Oops," Caelum said, feigning innocence. "Clumsy me!"

The challenger, now weaponless and flustered, stumbled back as Caelum extended a shadow tendril, wrapping it around his opponent's ankle. With a swift tug, he sent the challenger tumbling to the ground.

"Looks like you're out!" Caelum called, waving to the bewildered crowd.

They erupted into applause, the excitement palpable. Lila watched with a mixture of horror and admiration, unsure whether to cheer for him or chastise him for making a spectacle.

---

With each match, Caelum continued to eliminate competitors with absurdly effortless moves, all while maintaining his clumsy act. He stumbled, pretended to trip, and exaggerated his misfortunes, ensuring no one suspected the truth behind the Shadow Sovereign's power.

"Next up, we have Lila against the Firebrand!" the announcer declared, excitement crackling through the air.

Caelum watched nervously as Lila stepped into the ring against a fiery opponent who controlled flames with ease. His heart raced, hoping she could hold her own without revealing her true strength.

Lila began with a shield spell, fending off her opponent's fireballs, but he quickly countered with a powerful blast that sent her stumbling back.

"Come on, Lila! You got this!" Caelum shouted, feeling the urge to jump in and help, but knowing he had to let her fight her own battles.

With a determined look, Lila regained her footing, her resolve shining through. "I can do this!" she yelled, channeling her magic and countering with a wave of ice that froze the flames.

The crowd erupted into cheers as she took control, ultimately defeating the Firebrand. Caelum couldn't help but grin, pride swelling in his chest.

---

As the tournament continued, Caelum and Lila advanced to the final match, both champions in their own right. The stage was set for an epic showdown, and the atmosphere buzzed with tension.

"Ready to lose?" Caelum quipped, feigning nonchalance.

Lila smirked back, confidence radiating. "In your dreams, Caelum! I'll take you down!"

The final opponent, a seasoned mage known as the Windbreaker, stepped forward, a smirk on his face. "Prepare to be blown away!"

As the battle commenced, Caelum and Lila fought together, their synergy undeniable. Shadows and ice danced around them, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for the audience.

But Caelum knew he had to tread carefully. He couldn't reveal his full potential without blowing his cover.

With quick thinking, he summoned shadows to shield Lila as she unleashed her most powerful spell, an ice storm that cascaded over the Windbreaker.

"Now, Caelum!" she shouted, signaling him to finish it.

With a flourish, Caelum unleashed a shadow tendril that ensnared the Windbreaker, holding him in place. "Time to say goodbye!" he declared, sending a final blast of shadow energy that knocked their opponent out of the ring.

The crowd erupted in cheers, chanting their names as they stood victorious, hearts racing from the excitement of the match.

---

In the aftermath, Caelum stood on the stage, clutching the massive trophy awarded to them. Lila beamed beside him, excitement bubbling over as she held her prize.

"You did it, Caelum! We actually won!" she exclaimed, her joy infectious.

"Of course we did! Who could resist the charm of the Shadow Sovereign and the Ice Queen?" he teased, bowing dramatically.

"Don't let it get to your head!" Lila warned, but she couldn't hide her grin.

As they celebrated, Caelum felt a pang of guilt. *How long can I keep this up?* The thrill of victory was sweet, but the shadows he harbored were darker than ever.

In the distance, he spotted a familiar figure watching from the edge of the crowd. A chill ran down his spine as he recognized her—a yandere sister, much like Claire Kagenou, with a gleam of possessiveness in her eyes.

Caelum's heart raced. *What has she gotten herself into this time?*

As Lila cheered beside him, Caelum couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. Balancing friendships and secrets would be more challenging than he had ever imagined.
