"Ugh, what a great way to start the day. I've already met a real pain in the neck." I'm lying on my desk, letting out a long sigh of exasperation.
Zheng Kai is a student in class 1-B, the class next to mine. He's in the same class as Livy Hadley, the person I bumped into at the academy gate on the first day. They're also classmates with someone who will later be in the same group as Karen. But I haven't met her yet.
Well, that's true, except for class time, she would never show up on campus. And I'm kind of scared of her... I just hope I don't run into her directly.
*Swish*
The sound of the door being pulled open, a woman's pressured voice echoed.
"Let's start today's class." Aveline's voice echoed in all of our ears.
'Sigh...meeting her again'. I sighed inwardly.
Honestly, I really don't want to see Avenline right now. It's no mystery why; she's still paying a lot of attention to me. Her classes put a lot of pressure on me.
'I hope she'll forgive me soon'
---
"Alright, this morning's class ends here". Aveline said and quickly left the classroom. Leaving behind a heavy atmosphere.
After she left for a while, there were sighs of relief.
"Haaaa, her class is always stressful". A male student spoke up.
"I agree, she's scary as hell". Another replied. Then a series of students around nodded in agreement.
'That's right, I'm so scared'
Oh my gosh, if you guys are scared, imagine how I feel! It's like being watched by a venomous snake. One slip-up and I'm toast.
"Alright, let's go eat to relieve stress." I muttered and stood up, starting to walk.
"What should I eat today?" As I walked, my mind was thinking about today's lunch. I mean, the food in the canteen at Hollis is really delicious. The regular dishes are almost free and the taste is beyond words.
"As expected of Hollis, everything is good." I was once again amazed.
I walked quickly down the hallway with my mind set on the canteen, moving on instinct without paying too much attention to my surroundings. And then what was going to come, came.
*Thud*
I bumped into someone.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention. Are you okay, are you hurt?". I immediately apologized to the person I bumped into.
'It's a girl'
In front of me was a girl with white skin and wavy blonde hair that hung down her back. But because of the collision, her hair looked a bit messy, covering her face.
"My glasses...". She didn't react to my apology, but was just fumbling around looking for her glasses, which had fallen after the fall.
'Huh? Glasses? Wavy blonde hair... Wait!'. My heart skipped a beat when I realized something was wrong.
I raised my head and observed the classroom she had just walked out of. As soon as I saw the class name board, I froze.
'Fuck, Class 1-B really...'. My mind started to panic. But it didn't take long for me to come back to my senses and quickly picked up the glasses of the girl in front of me.
'Please, it's not her...'. I prayed in my mind.
"Here are your glasses-". Before I could finish my sentence, the girl in front of me reached out and snatched the glasses from my hand.
She raised her head and put on her glasses, then gently adjusted her messy hair. Only then did I clearly see her sharp green eyes.
'Oh shit, I'm screwed. I'm in trouble now.' I screamed in my heart, wondering why my fate was so unlucky.
Standing up and lightly brushing the dirt off her uniform, the girl looked straight at me and smiled. That smile looked friendly, but I knew that behind it was a great flood. She didn't smile, instead, she was angry.
"It's okay, I'm also at fault because I didn't pay attention either." Her voice rang out while her lips were still smiling. The smile was extremely fake.
What she implied was: "Are you blind? Or should I just gouge your eyes out? What use are eyes if you can't even see where you're going?"
"No no, it's my fault. I'm really sorry for bumping into you. I'll be more careful in the future!" I quickly apologized with all my heart.
"Please spare me. I'll get out of your sight forever". That's what I meant.
"It's fine, you look like you have something urgent to do. You can go ahead first". She waved her hand and said.
What she meant was: "Get out of my sight quickly, you're an eyesore".
"Um, um. I'll go now". After saying that, I quickly left. I didn't want to see her for too long, the longer I stayed, the more she would remember me.
---
I was in the canteen now, and I was enjoying my meal.
To be honest, my mood was ruined by running into that girl, and my food wasn't delicious anymore.
Just mentioning her made me shiver.
She is Ellie Shell, a genius with a super brain, also the last member of Karen's team, the best supporter. Her theoretical scores have always been at the top without exception. Well, her father is a great scientist, so it's understandable that she's good.
She has a bit of a temper, but overall she's a good person. Sure, she can be quite sharp-tongued, but she wouldn't hurt anyone. Most of the time, she just likes to scare people. Usually, she's very polite when you first meet her. It's only when you get to know her better that you'll hear the vicious words from her mouth.
Speaking of background... None of the members of Karen's team have normal backgrounds. Well, except for Briar. He's just a jerk with ridiculously high talent and luck.
Ellie Shell, as I mentioned above, is the daughter of the greatest scientist on the Vedast continent. With that background, she has a lot of resources for research. And she has shown her talent in that field since she was a child.
Zheng Kai is the only son of the Vice President of the Awakened Association, or the Association for short. The organization controls all Awakeners on the continent. Not to mention that his father is also the head of a large family originating from ancient China. With his father's status, Zheng Kai has been invested in a lot since he was young, and his talent in martial arts has also blossomed. From then on, he received even more favor.
Livy Hadley's background is not too bad. She's the only daughter of the chairman of the largest commercial conglomerate in the Vedast continent. Thanks to the enormous amount of money her father provided and her extremely high rank limit, she has been able to develop herself without facing too many obstacles.
As for Karen. She originally came from a very ordinary background. She was an orphan in an orphanage but was later adopted by the head of a powerful guild.
Guilds are divided from C-rank to SS-rank, and she is the adopted daughter of the head of the strongest SS-rank guild, the Black Warrior guild.
The leaders of the Black Warrior guild, a childless couple, adopted Karen after discovering her extraordinary talents at an orphanage. She became part of their family and was raised with love and care.
She should have received all the love from her adoptive parents, but fate was ironic. After she was adopted for a while, her adoptive mother became pregnant, and from then on, they paid less attention to her. But as parents, they still provided resources for her to develop. It was just that family love gradually became something far away that she could not reach.
On the surface, she was the beloved first daughter that the couple had hidden well until recently when it was revealed to the light. On the inside, she was just an adopted daughter who lacked love. With her talent and status, she received a lot of attention, of course both good and bad. She was approached by many people with bad intentions, kidnapped, and assassinated countless times. Gradually, she became colder and more wary of everyone and everything around her. An invisible wall was built around her to block everything.
The fact that she was an adopted daughter will be revealed to the light in the future. But that was just a small, insignificant event. At that time, everyone had already recognized Karen, her identity and background were no longer an issue.
'Alright, I'm done eating. There's no class this afternoon, it seems I should go back to my room, take a nap, and practice by myself later'. I told myself and left the canteen, returned to my room, and fell into a nap.
