Chapter 31 - Chapter 31; A shift in dynamics

As the conversation continued, Old Jin returned to the room, his expression neutral yet his eyes shining with curiosity. "My Lady, if you are finished with the selection process, I have some matters to discuss regarding the upcoming festival preparations."

"Yes, Old Jin, of course," Yanli said, shifting her focus back to him. "What is it that needs my attention?"

"The Empress has requested your presence for the festival preparations. She wishes to include you in selecting the floral arrangements for the banquet," Old Jin explained. "It is an opportunity to showcase your talents."

Yanli's heart skipped a beat. The Empress was known for her discerning taste and demanding standards, and to be invited to contribute was a significant honor. "I would love to help with that," she replied eagerly. "I'll prepare myself for the meeting."

"Excellent, My Lady," Old Jin said with a slight bow. "The meeting will take place tomorrow morning. I will ensure that you have everything you need to impress the Empress."

As Old Jin turned to leave, Yanli felt a surge of excitement mixed with a hint of anxiety. She had always wanted to prove herself in the court, but she was acutely aware of the challenges that lay ahead.

Bai Min must have sensed the change in her mood, for she leaned forward slightly. "My Lady, if you would like, I could help you prepare for your meeting with the Empress. I can assist with your attire and ensure that you have everything you need to make a good impression."

Yanli smiled, appreciating the offer. "That would be wonderful, Bai Min. I want to ensure I look my best. Your eye for detail will certainly help."

As Bai Min began to suggest ideas for Yanli's attire, a knock echoed through the study. Old Jin stepped back in, a small frown creasing his forehead. "Forgive me for interrupting again, My Lady, but there is another matter that requires your attention."

"What is it, Old Jin?" Yanli asked, her curiosity piqued.

"There has been news of some disturbances in the outer regions. Reports indicate that there may be trouble brewing among the merchant caravans, and I believe it might affect the upcoming festival. The Emperor wishes to discuss it with you and the Empress."

"Trouble? What kind of trouble?" Yanli felt a knot form in her stomach. She had been looking forward to the festival, and the thought of anything ruining it was disheartening.

"Some merchants are claiming unfair treatment by the local authorities, and there are whispers of dissent among the people," Old Jin replied, his tone grave. "It could escalate if not addressed quickly."

Yanli's mind raced as she considered the implications. "We must ensure the festival goes smoothly, then. Perhaps I can suggest some measures to help soothe tensions?"

Old Jin nodded, clearly appreciating her proactive approach. "That would be wise, My Lady. Your insights could provide valuable support to the Emperor's efforts."

"Very well. I will think carefully about how we can address these issues during the meeting," Yanli said, determination edging her voice.

As Old Jin left the room once more, Bai Min regarded Yanli thoughtfully. "You have a good heart, My Lady. Your concern for the people speaks volumes of your character."

Yanli felt a warmth spread through her at Bai Min's words. "Thank you, Bai Min. It's important to me that the people feel valued and heard. I've seen what happens when they feel neglected, and I won't stand by idly."

"Your resolve is admirable," Bai Min replied, a hint of respect in her voice. "It will serve you well in the court, especially with challenges ahead."

Yanli nodded, her thoughts spinning with possibilities. "I want to be more than just a figure at court; I want to be someone who can truly make a difference."

Bai Min's expression softened, and she leaned closer. "You have that potential, My Lady. Just remember to tread carefully in the waters of court politics. Allies are valuable, but enemies can be equally dangerous."

"I will," Yanli assured her, feeling a sense of relief in having someone like Bai Min by her side. "Together, we will navigate whatever challenges arise."

The atmosphere in the pavilion began to shift as they delved deeper into their plans. Bai Min expertly helped Yanli organize her thoughts about the upcoming meeting and how best to approach the issues at hand.

"Perhaps you could highlight the contributions the merchants make to the festival. Show the Emperor and Empress that their needs matter just as much as the festivities," Bai Min suggested, her brow furrowed in concentration.

Yanli nodded, her excitement returning. "Yes! If I can make them feel seen and appreciated, perhaps it will help ease their frustrations. I can suggest specific ways to honor them during the festival—perhaps a showcase of their goods, or a moment in the festivities dedicated to acknowledging their hard work."

Bai Min's eyes brightened. "That's a brilliant idea, My Lady. It will not only strengthen the bond between the court and the merchants but also demonstrate your understanding of the greater needs of the people."

Yanli grinned, feeling the rush of ideas flooding her mind. "And we can emphasize that this festival should be a celebration for everyone. It would be wonderful to invite some local families to partake in the festivities as well."

"An excellent suggestion, My Lady," Bai Min replied, her voice filled with encouragement. "Your desire to bring joy to others is evident. The Empress will surely appreciate your thoughts."

As they continued brainstorming, Yanli felt a sense of camaraderie with Bai Min, as if they were allies in a shared mission. She realized how fortunate she was to have found someone so capable and supportive.

"Thank you, Bai Min," Yanli said, her voice sincere. "I'm grateful to have you by my side. You've already helped me more than you know."

"It is my honor, My Lady," Bai Min replied with a slight smile. "I look forward to serving you and supporting your aspirations
