Chapter 4 - Drawing closer

The day slipped by quietly, as most Sundays did. The air outside was warm with the promise of spring, the breeze carrying whispers of fresh grass and blooming flowers. Rei sat by his window, fingers twitching over his game controller, eyes focused intently on the screen as he battled his latest challenge. But the constant buzz of movement and sound effects couldn't distract him from the soft hum of sunlight filtering through the curtains, nor the knowledge that his mother's voice would soon call him away from his digital realm.

"Rei! Could you run down to the store for me, please?" his mother called from downstairs. Her tone carried a hint of impatience, but Rei couldn't help but groan. Sundays were sacred, a day for relaxation and video games. But a small sigh escaped his lips as he pushed away from his chair and grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair.

The store wasn't far—just down the street, less than a five-minute walk from his house. Rei swung open the door, and as he stepped outside, he caught sight of Alora just leaving the store, her arms piled high with grocery bags. She looked as graceful as ever, her usual smile lighting up her face even as she struggled to keep her balance. Rei paused for a moment, then crossed the street and jogged over to her.

"Alora!" he called, lifting a hand in greeting.

She looked up, surprised, and then a smile spread across her face. "Rei! I didn't expect to see you here."

Rei chuckled, glancing down at the small bag of snacks he had bought. "My mom sent me out for some things," he said, lifting the bag in his hand. "But I see you're doing a little shopping of your own."

Alora rolled her eyes, though there was a gleeful twinkle in her eye. "Seems like it, doesn't it? I didn't realize I'd grabbed this much stuff." She shifted the bags in her arms and adjusted her grip, glancing over at him with a grateful smile. "Could you give me a hand with these?"

Rei didn't hesitate. He took one of the bags from her arms, feeling the weight settle easily against his side. "Sure thing. Where to next?"

Alora led the way down the sidewalk, and they began the short journey back toward their homes. The conversation flowed smoothly between them as they walked, light and easy, as though they'd been friends for years. Rei found himself thinking about how comfortable it felt, the way they could talk about anything and everything without it feeling forced.

"So, Rei," Alora said after a moment, glancing around as though checking they were alone. "Is there a park nearby? Somewhere nice where you can just... get away from things?"

Rei paused, considering the question. It had been ages since he thought about parks. The idea of a quiet, peaceful place seemed appealing, though he couldn't remember the last time he went to one. "Actually, I think there's a small park not too far from here," he replied, squinting into the distance as though it might come into focus. "I've walked by it a few times, but I never really stopped to check it out."

Alora nodded, her expression brightening as she looked at him. "Really? I've been thinking about finding a place to relax more. A park sounds perfect."

Rei smiled. It was a nice idea, something simple but calm. "Yeah, it's a little small, but it's quiet. We could check it out sometime, if you'd like?"

Alora's eyes twinkled, and she nodded enthusiastically. "I'd love that. It sounds like the perfect spot."

They continued their walk, the distance to their neighborhood feeling shorter with each step. When they reached the intersection near their homes, Alora paused and turned to face Rei. "We're almost there," she said with a smile. "And thanks for helping me with these bags. I don't think I would've made it this far without you."

Rei shrugged, though he felt a small thrill of pleasure at her words. "No problem. It wasn't that heavy, really."

Alora rolled her eyes playfully but didn't comment further. Instead, she gestured toward her house, just a few doors down from Rei's. "I'd love to invite you in for tea, you know? To thank you properly."

Rei hesitated, glancing between the bags in his arms and the street ahead. Part of him wanted to rush home and get back to his game, but the other part, the part he didn't fully understand, wanted to accept her invitation. "I should drop these off first," he said, trying to sound practical.

Alora's eyes twinkled with mischief. "You'll be back before you know it, right? It's just across the street, after all."

Rei hesitated for a moment longer before finally giving in. "Okay, fine. I'll be back in a few minutes."

Alora clapped her hands together, her smile spreading. "Perfect! I'll have everything ready for you."

Rei quickly crossed the street, dropped off the groceries, and returned to Alora's house a few minutes later. Inside, the kitchen was warm and inviting, filled with the scent of freshly brewed tea and something sweet—probably cookies. Alora was waiting for him at the table, her eyes bright and curious. She poured tea into a delicate cup and handed it to him with a graceful flourish.

"Here you go," she said with a smile. "I thought you might like something warm after carrying those heavy bags."

Rei took the cup, feeling the heat radiating through his fingers. The tea was rich and fragrant, a comforting blend that lingered on his tongue. He took a sip, feeling warmth spread through him, even as he realized how close they were sitting.

"So," Alora said, settling down across from him, "what do you think? Pretty nice, huh?"

Rei nodded slowly, taking another sip of tea. "Yeah, it's... cozy. I can see why you like it."

Alora grinned, and Rei realized that it was a genuine expression, one that seemed to light up her whole face. "I'm glad you think so. It's been a while since I had company. It'll be fun to have someone to chat with over tea."

They talked about their weeks, their favorite books, games, and movies. The conversation flowed smoothly between them, with Rei finding himself surprised at how easy it was to talk to Alora. There were no awkward silences, no pressure to say the right thing. It was like talking to someone he'd known for years.

Finally, after a few cups of tea and a few laughs, Rei stood up. "I should probably head back home," he said, feeling reluctant to leave. The warmth of Alora's house seemed to linger with him, wrapping around him like a blanket.

Alora stood as well, holding out her hand in a casual, inviting gesture. "Thanks for coming, Rei. I really enjoyed it. We should do this again sometime."

Rei smiled, feeling lighter than he had in days. "Yeah, I'd like that. Maybe we can check out the park sometime?"

Alora's eyes twinkled with delight, and she nodded. "I'd love that.

As he walked away from Alora's house, Rei realized that things had shifted subtly between them—an unspoken connection growing stronger with every word and every gesture. It felt natural, almost inevitable, like two pieces of a puzzle fitting into place. And for the first time in a long while, he felt happy....
