Chapter 4 - Familiar Roads

The rays of sunshine pass through the campervan's curtains and fall on Tabi's face, waking him up.

"Hey Tori," said Tabi annoyingly, "why haven't you woken me up?"

"You're old enough to wake up early if you have to do something."

"I don't even have to do anything; I just like starting my day early," Tabi said, scratching his head and getting off the bed.

As Tabi is brushing his teeth, he hears Tori shouting, "We're here!"

"You got any plans for today?" Tori asked.

"I was just thinking both of us can do whatever we want in this city. We'll share our experiences once we get back."

"Alright, sure. I'll open the shop and sell some leftover ramen. You can get going, though."

[Wow, he doesn't even need me around the shop anymore. He's growing up.]

"Alright, see you later, Tori."

Tabi is walking through the park; he loves the fresh air and the calm of the park. He sits down to enjoy it, but something breaks that peace.

It's a group of children, running around and playing. Tabi feels a sense of nostalgia but breaks out of it.

[I miss those days when life was simpler. Running without a care in the world. Am I any different right now, though? I'm still directionless and free, not bound by anything. I can finally be myself. I like this lifestyle.]

After thinking for a while, Tabi gets up and goes in a random direction. He ends up walking along the road; a few cars pass by, but nothing more — it's still a small town.

All of a sudden, a group of punks passes by riding their motorcycles, creating a lot of noise.

A few memories flash in Tabi's mind; memories of a tall, blond guy, looking like a highschooler. In one memory, he is riding a motorcycle, but in the next, he's on the floor with a lot of blood around him.

Tabi looks visibly shaken, as if he remembered something scary from his past. In that moment, he hears a shout behind him.

"Hey, Tabi!"

Tabi turns and sees Tori walking up to him.

"Are you okay? You seem a little shaken," Tori said with a worried tone.

"Yeah, I'm okay. How about you? How was your day?"

They are walking back to the campervan and talking.

"Nothing special, just going around the town appreciating the views. What about you?"

"I can say the same thing, but I guess that's part of going on a journey. Can't always be fun."

An awkward silence arises between the two of them. Tabi breaks it.

"Hey, why do you look at me as your role model?" Tabi asked. He still seemed worried about the thing that happened before.

After thinking for some time, Tori said, "I don't know. You just seem mature enough to help me find my way in life but childish enough to still be a lot of fun."

"That's nice of you to say... sometimes I just feel like I'm the worst person in the world."

"All of us feel that way sometimes. We all know the bad stuff we've done in the past. Some people don't care about it, but you do regret it, which shows you're a good person. We can't just be sad about the past for the rest of our lives; we have to try to become better, and you're doing that."

Tabi smiles and responds with a simple "Thank you."

The two of them get back to the campervan and fall asleep without much talk, aside from the basic stuff.
