Kael's POV
In the faint light of the sanctuary that had been their home since the baby was born, Astrid's eyes shone brightly as she stared at the sleeping youngster. A chill went through me as I stood in the doorway. It didn't quite add together, but there was something unnerving about the strange way Astrid stared at the infant.
"Astrid, what's going on?" My voice was low and extremely careful as I requested. "You've been behaving so oddly lately. Is everything all right?
Astrid's eyes never left the youngster; they remained fixed on him. "Kael, everything is good. Just a little bit...just worried about the child's safety."
I squinted. "What are you saying? What's happening that I'm unaware of?"
Astrid's eyes, which glinted with a hint of secrets unspoken, were not touched by her grin. "Kael, just a little issue I've been looking into. Don't stress about it. Everything is within control of me."
