Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12:THE UNEXPECTED ALLY

Thorne's smile grew as the hooded figure approached.

"My lord," the figure whispered, their voice husky.

Zara's eyes narrowed, untrusting and tense "Who is this?"

Thorne raised a hand, silencing her.

The figure pushed back its hood, revealing a shocking face.

"Kael," Mark breathed.

Kael, once Tristan's most trusted advisor, now stood before them.

"What brings you to our gathering?" Thorne asked.

Kael's gaze swept the room. "I've come to offer my allegiance."

Zara's skepticism was palpable. "Why?"

Kael's eyes locked onto Thorne. "I share your vision for the kingdom."

Thorne's smile widened. "Welcome, Kael. Your expertise will be invaluable."

As Kael joined the group, Mark's unease grew.

Could they trust this sudden defector?

Or did Kael hide ulterior motives?

Thorne continued, "With Kael's insight, our plan will succeed."

Zara leaned forward. "Let's proceed."

But Mark's doubts lingered.

Had they just made a fatal mistake? Men like Kael weren't easy to sway, what had Thorne promised him?

Kael's revelation sent shockwaves up Mark's aged spine.

Mark's eyes narrowed in distrust. "How can we trust you?"

Kael's expression remained calm. "My loyalty is to the kingdom, not Tristan."

Thorne intervened. "Enough. Kael's expertise will ensure our success."

Zara nodded reluctantly."Proceed with the plan."

Thorne smiled. "Our diversion will draw Lucy and Tristan away from the sanctuary."

Kael unfolded a map. "I've identified a vulnerable location."

Mark studied the map. "This will work."

But doubts crept into Mark's mind.

Was Kael genuine?

Or was he playing a deeper game?

As the group finalized their strategy, Mark knew.

He had to keep a close eye on Kael.

And Thorne, and even Zara. You never could trust anybody in situations like this.

The web of deceit grew thicker.

Who would be caught first?

Mark's unease grew as the group dispersed for the night, each member tasked with their role in the diversion.

He couldn't shake the feeling that Kael hid something. He didn't quite trust the man's smug smile.

"Thorne, can I have a word?" Mark asked, his tone low and pleading.

Thorne raised an eyebrow. "Speak."

"Kael's sudden defection... it doesn't quite sit right with me, he's one of the most loyal men in the Lycan King's court.. it's too sudden..."

Thorne's expression turned cold. "Kael's skills are invaluable. Don't question my judgment."

Mark hesitated, but Thorne's gaze silenced him.

Meanwhile, Ryker and his team pressed on, driven by their quest.

They'd left the library a couple of days ago and had found themselves passing through an array of villages.

"We're close," Lenora whispered, her senses tingling.

Rowan's eyes locked onto mine. "I feel it too."

Their determination had only grown stronger since the library incident. The baby must be found.

As night fell, the diversion unfolded.

Kael led a group of Thorne's men, attacking a nearby village.

Ryker and his team rushed to defend the village, unaware of the true plan.

Mark watched from the shadows, his heart heavy.

Was he betraying his true allies?

Just as the battle raged, Kael slipped away.

"Where are you going?" Mark demanded.

Kael's smile sent shivers down Mark's spine.

"To ensure the child's safety," Kael whispered with a crooked grin.

Mark's doubts exploded.

What did Kael mean?

Was he working against Thorne?

Or was this a deeper game?

Thorne watched the village battle unfold, a satisfied smile spreading.

"This diversion will keep Lucy and Tristan occupied," he said to Zara.

Zara's eyes gleamed. "And Kael's role?"

Thorne's expression turned cryptic. "Kael has... flexible loyalties."

Mark's internal conflict deepened.

He had sworn to protect Tristan, yet Thorne's plan seemed unstoppable.

As he wrestled with doubt, Kael's mysterious mission beckoned.

Mark followed Kael, tracking him to an abandoned windmill.

Inside, Kael met with a hooded figure.

"Report," the figure commanded.

Kael bowed. "The diversion succeeds. Lucy and Tristan are occupied."

The figure pushed back its hood, revealing a shocking face.

Astrid the sanctuary's leader.

"What's your true plan, Astrid?" Mark demanded, stepping forward.

Astrid's gaze locked onto Mark. "To protect the child, at any cost."

Kael's eyes flicked lazily between Mark and Astrid.

"Which side are you on, Kael?" Mark pressed.

Kael's smile sent shivers down Mark's spine.

"Patience, is a virtue Mark. One you seem to no longer possess. Soon you'll see." Kael whispered with that very coy smile.

Back at the palace:

Tristan's POV

My eyes narrowed, studying the documents spread before me in the dimly lit chamber. The flickering candles cast eerie shadows on the walls, mirrored the darkness increasingly growing at a rapid oace within the kingdom and more alarmingly, withing my very court.

Lucy entered, her presence a welcome respite as always from the weight of my suspicions. Her gaze swept the room, taking in the scattered papers and my intense focus.

"What have you found?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"More inconsistencies," I replied, rubbing the bridge of my nose tiredly, my tone laced with concern. "I suspect multiple traitors within our court, Lucy. People we trust, deeply."

Lucy's expression didn't change, she didn't look the least bit surprised, her eyes locking onto Mine. "Ofcourse, that only makes sense. Who do you suspect?"

I hesitated, my mind racing with all the implications. "I'm not sure yet, but I have a plan. We need to flush out the traitors before they can do more harm."

Lucy's eyes sparkled with determination. "Alright, what's your plan? I'm listening."

"We'll spread false information, see who bites," I explained, his voice low. "We'll create a web of deception, make the traitors think we're onto something. Then, we'll watch and see who reacts."

Lucy nodded, her mind already racing with strategies. "Quite like baiting the hook to catch a fish? I like it. I'll start spreading rumors, subtle ones. See who takes the bait." She said, smiling. She hadn't smiled much since our baby was taken, she'd lost so much weight as well from not eating and all the fatigue from crying and not being able to sleep. I'll make them pay.

I smiled, a plan forming between us. "And I'll review the guard rotations, look for anomalies. Anyone who's been acting suspiciously or has access to sensitive information. If they are traitors we haven't noticed until now, then they have to have access to some of the guards.

Together, we wove an intricately complex web of deception, each thread carefully crafted to ensnare and expose all the traitors.

Our goal: uncover the traitors before it was too late, before the kingdom completely crumbled from within.

Pulling her into my arms, I kissed her forehead and led her back to bed, to cocoon in the sweet nectar of her warm embrace.

Meanwhile,

Mark's unease grew, his loyalty torn between Tristan and Thorne. Kael's loyalty remained uncertain, Astrid's true intentions hid behind a mask, and Thorne's plan unfolded, unseen.

In the shadows, Thorne watched, his eyes gleaming with satisfaction.

"The puppets are dancing," he whispered to Zara. "Tristan and Lucy think they're hunting us, that they're ahead of us, but they're merely playing into our hands."

Zara's smile mirrored Thorne's. "The kingdom will soon be ours."

Unbeknownst to them, Tristan had anticipated their every move.

He had decided to play their game with them, by planting moles within their ranks.

Informants fed him crucial intel.

Tristan's web tightened around the traitors.

Mark, torn between loyalty and duty, began to question Thorne's motives.

Astrid's true intentions remained shrouded.

But Tristan's focus remained unwavering.

The game was afoot.

Thorne's smile began to falter.

"Zara, something's amiss," he said, voiced laced with

uncertainty.

Zara's eyes narrowed. "I can feel it too. Tristan's playing a deeper game."

Thorne's face darkened. "We must adapt."

But Tristan held the upper hand.

His pieces moved unseen.

Checkmate loomed.
