Chapter 1 - Hauling

Apocalypse

Jason woke up by the glaring light from a window. His eyelids twitching, trying to see the source of light, blocking it with his arm. The light touched Jason with it's gentle warmth, making him sllightly awake, but still sleepy and frustrated of his silly and an interesting dream that is now gone.

*Sighs~*

Sighing he sat up still with eyes closed, ignoring the surrounding and trying to methodically awake himself.

Scratching his neck, he once again twitches his eyes to try and adapt to the shining light, trying to grasp reality, but reality hit him hard.

At first it was the burnt smell, like a bug caught in a bug zapper. Ignoring that, he heared the horns of cars, the sound of exhaust and birds and lastly the sound of his desk fan.

Opening his eyes, he looks around at his depressing apartment and scratches his eyes to further start his waking up ritual. Laying back on the bed again, he stretches his whole body.

*Intense groan~* *Sigh~*

Staring at his ceiling for a while, he is finally done with booting up.

'Augh~ should have not gone for that all nighter' Jason groaned, his head slightly aching.

Jason is your normal 23 year old dude, he lives in an apartment near the capital and does part-times here and there.

He was also a drop out from college not because he was a delinquent, but because his parents died from a virus, the last days of his parents were still lingering on his mind, at the least he was able to share the final moments talking to them.

Without his parents support he wasn't able to pay for his college even if he was to take a job, he won't be able to get into one because of the virus.

Now as a way to cope with stress and depression, he drowned himself in all kinds of entertainment, manga's, light novels, Anime, etc…

"I should have closed those curtains" Sighing once more, he got up from the bed and approached the bathroom to do his hygiene, after that he made a coffee and opened up his computer.

He was able to afford the computer way before the epidemic began. He actually lived far from the capital, knowing there would be job opportunities here, he moved to the capital and rented an apartment, leaving behind his parents house.

*Sip~*

'What's going on in the world right now?' Exploring the internet he could still see articles of the virus that killed his parents making him sllightly sad.

'This virus has been going for a year, why can't it just stop? This should have been gone by now' Jason being upset opened up a website for light novels.

'Hmm, I always love the apocalypse genre, but I already read the great ones. I wish I could forget these novels so I could read them again. I bet I would do great in a apocalypse, hacking Zombies with a Katana, and shooting their brains out. Man that would be great' Jason sometimes imagines himself in the apocalypse scenario, thinking he was ready to challenge the apocalypse and survive.

'You know what, I'll gather some food. You never know when the apocalypse might happen' Chuckling to himself he got up and grabbed his keys to his apartment and left.

It was 10 am, skies were still bright and there was a high wind blowing his enthusiasm away.

'Why do I get lazy everytime there is a strong wind? Maybe the world is stopping me' Locking the doors, Jason headed downstairs and met his neighbor.

"Hey" said Jason

"Hi" said Elize.

And both passed each other, no further conversation uttered.

Stepping on the stairs Jason thought.

'So Big' and shook his head to get rid of that thought.

'Her package is big, wonder what she will do with it' Jason thought wondering about the big cardboard package she brought.

'Maybe she got fired, poor woman' Jason arrives at the ground floor and heads to the 9/11 store near the apartment.

While heading there he contemplated on what to get.

'Sardines? It's ok, but If I'm really desperate I would go for it. Meatloaf would be good, It's fine not cooked, but if I wanted to get it special I'll just cook it with eggs. Bahh I'll just go with both'

Arriving at the store he headed straight to the canned goods section.

Grabbing each type of canned goods, and contemplated more.

'Noodles? Hmmm, Alright I'll get some' Heading to the packed noodles section he grabbed one of every kind and headed to the cashier.

*News Anchor Speaking~*

Arriving at the cashier he looked at the lady behind the counter.

'That looks delicious' Jason thought looking at the noodles the lady is eating.

Seeing the customer, the Lady behind the counter placed the food down and wiped her hands on her jeans and said.

"Out of stock sir?" The Lady said.

"Yeah, just ran out of food, been pulling all-nighters lately" Said Jason scratching his head.

"Yeah, that sounds tiring" The lady grabs the canned goods and checks it.

*Beep~* *Beep~* *T.V Noise*

Jason looks at the T.V noticing that a news broadcast is being shown.

"An unknown gas leakage happend at ******* at 8:45 am today, which caused citezens walking by to cough severely and they wondered what type of illness they have inhaled. They have decided to file lawsuits against the establishment. " The News Anchor stated.

This piqued Jason's interest. The lady at the counter interrupted him.

"Sir that will be 255$ would you like to use a credit card?" The lady asked.

"Ummm no. Oh wait, yeah actually" Jason said.

Looking at the T.V once again, he listened to the further news.

"The gas leak is said to come from an establishment from an unknown company. To get a good look at the scene Winston King at ******* Hospital to report his findings" The scene changes into a hospital setting, showing the patients affected by the gas leak, it showed the patients profusely coughing.

The Lady packed his groceries and while Jason was waiting for it, he heard an intriguing sentence from the reporter.

"The doctors here at the hospital has once again set up a quarantine for these patients and ensuring that it can't spread and make another epidemic back to you Gina"

While that was happening, Jason noticed that behind the reporter were patients having spasms but a different kind. It's more like the patients were twitching now and then, like getting possessed, this gave goosebumps to Jason, hitting him with a realization that something was up.

'Is it what I think it is?' Jason contemplated and asked the lady at the cashier.

"Actually Miss, Can I grab more? Just in case I pulled more all-nighters" Jason asked.

"Umm yeah sure" The Lady smiled gesturing for him to do so.

As Jason turned he grabbed a cart that had space for two baskets and grabbed a basket and headed straight to water jugs.

Grabbing 3 of them he then got to the energy bars he got five boxes of them and headed to the canned section to grab more meatloaf and sausages.

Passing by the magazine section he halted for a second and grabbed dozens, and most importantly he hauled the medicines, alcohol, gauge's and bandages.

Heading to the battery section, he grabbed dozens and 3 flashlights. He also grabbed insect repellents cause why not.

Eyeing the generator he grabbed 1 and some wires. Knowing he grabbed everything else, he headed back to the cashier.

Giving his credit card to the Lady at the counter he explained.

"I'll give this credit card to you, is it possible that you can charge me for all of these without checking this all out? I just remembered that there was an emergency. "

"It is possible" The lady grabbed the card and typed on the computer and swiped the credit card. Jason puts his pin and grabs the other grocery at the counter.

"Thank you Ms… Actually can you do me a favor?" Jason asked. Looking at the T.V for just a second.

"What is it?" The Lady asked confusedly.

"Can you close up early today? You know I just feel like something bad will happen today. Can you do that for me?" Jason asked, seeing the hesitation in the lady he grabbed her hand and continued.

"Please? And also tell your kids or family to lock up their houses and stay inside. " Jason said with a grim expression.

Seeing the seriousness of Jason she nodded and looked at the T.V she was slightly shocked, it was on static.

"Good, I'll say goodbye for now. I hope I can see you later" Jason grabbed the cart and headed outside with the cart.

Looking at the Lady calling her family, he smiled and got faster to push the cart…

Arriving at the apartment, he entered and locked the gate.

Carrying the heavy cart he headed to the second floor and went to his apartment.

Locking the door he sighed in relief.

'If that's what I think it is, at least I'm ready. ' Jason thought

He then pushes the cabinet to block the door and heads to the refrigerator to store the canned goods. He grabs the unnecessary things inside his fridge like vegetables and leftover food.

Jason then looked at the internet and was surprised that no one seemed to be in panic.

Remembering he needs to download information, headed to Vikipedia to download the important info like agriculture and biology.

He then noticed that his favorite apocalypse novel released an update when…
