Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: Everstar Town, Part 3

The deep, resonant chimes echoed from within Everstar Town, flooding the night with an oppressive rhythm, impossible to ignore. As the sound surged forth like a tidal wave, it ensnared everything in its path.

Nina Eichner froze, her gaze growing vacant, as if an unseen force was pulling her toward the depths of the town. Her eyes were empty and unfocused, her face devoid of expression, as though her soul had been pulled away by the ringing, leaving her body a shell moving mindlessly forward.

"Nina!" Ray Quinn shouted, sensing something amiss. He grabbed her arm, trying to pull her back. But Nina's steps, stiff and unyielding, moved forward with an unstoppable determination, driven by a force he could not counter.

"Damn that bell…" Ray muttered, a foreboding feeling creeping over him. As the tolling continued, it felt like the sound was seeping into his consciousness, pulling at his senses and dragging him into a dark abyss. But years of rigorous training had given him resilience; he gritted his teeth, breathing deeply to steady his mind, managing to resist the pull, staying awake and alert.

"Nina, can you hear me?!" Ray leaned close, urgently calling her name. But she remained unresponsive, her blank gaze fixed in the distance, heedless of his voice.

A chill tightened around Ray's heart as the tolling intensified, each beat like chains wrapping around them. He knew he had to stop this force from overtaking her, or Nina might be lost entirely. Cursing under his breath, he scooped her into his arms and started moving back, attempting to escape the sound's reach and carry her out of this nightmarish town.

But as he retreated, the bell seemed to sense his resistance. The sound grew heavier, each toll quickening in pace, pressing against his mind, assaulting his awareness. Ray felt dizziness overtaking him, his legs weakening as though drained of strength, and his vision blurred. He clenched his jaw, struggling to stay conscious. But the truth was clear—the town harbored an evil he couldn't resist, lying in wait to draw all trespassers into its endless darkness.

Each step grew more laborious, as though invisible chains bound him tighter with every stride, pulling him toward the town's heart. Even as he fought to move, Nina remained lifeless in his arms, her vacant eyes and empty expression showing no signs of awareness.

"I can't… give up…" Ray whispered, his voice determined. He inhaled deeply, letting the sharp night air cut across his face, grounding him. Closing his eyes, he focused his mind, pushing out the influence of the bells. Years of discipline allowed him to resist some of its control.

"Nina, wake up!" he murmured urgently, hoping to stir a sliver of consciousness within her. But she was unmoved. The tolling seemed to seize everything within them. Glancing around, he searched for an exit or a place to hide from its influence.

Then, he spotted a derelict building nearby. The door was slightly ajar, leading into shadowed depths. Perhaps seeking refuge inside would shield them, granting a brief reprieve from the ringing.

Gritting his teeth, Ray dashed toward the building with Nina in his arms. Each step felt like dragging heavy chains, but a sense of urgency pushed him forward, forcing him not to falter. Finally, he reached the building, pushed open the door, and entered, shutting out part of the sound.

Inside, darkness cloaked the room. He set Nina down gently, studying her face with worry. "Nina, can you hear me? Wake up!" he said, shaking her shoulders lightly, eyes filled with anxiety.

After a few moments, a faint flicker returned to Nina's eyes, a hint of confusion. She blinked slowly, as though awakening from a nightmare. "Ray… what happened to me?" she whispered.

Ray exhaled in relief. "You're alright now. The bell—it seemed to put you in some kind of trance. We'll stay here for now and not move."

Nina stared at him, a shiver running through her as memories of her puppet-like actions came back to her. "That bell… what kind of sound can do that?"

"I don't know," Ray replied, his gaze turning grim. "But I'm certain that whatever's in this town, it shouldn't be here. The bell is either a warning or… a summons."

Hearing his steady voice gave Nina some comfort, but a deeper fear remained. "What are we supposed to do?"

Ray took her hand firmly, his gaze resolute. "I'll get you out of here. Just stay close, and don't let any sound or vision mislead you. Now, let's stay quiet and wait for the bells to stop. Then we'll find a way out."

They sat in silence, leaning against the wall, waiting for the eerie chime to subside. But the sound only continued, like the heartbeat of some dark force, echoing Ray's conviction: they hadn't merely entered a forsaken town but stumbled upon a web of unseen dangers.

Elsewhere, Alina Smith and the other volunteers were organizing supplies in an old building within Everstar Town. Suddenly, the heavy toll of bells filled the air, and she sensed a strange disturbance immediately. The bell's toll seemed to release an invisible tide that quickly spread to each person. The volunteers fell into a stupor one by one, moving stiffly, with hollow gazes, as though an unseen force compelled them to walk outside.

Alina felt a heavy pressure trying to invade her mind, accompanied by a sensation of disorientation. She bit down hard, focusing to resist the force. Having survived the apocalyptic future, her will was sharper than most. She knew this was no ordinary sound but an unknown force, slowly guiding them toward an unknown danger.

Clenching her fists, Alina forced herself to stay alert, scanning her surroundings for a temporary refuge from the bell's influence. The tolls grew more urgent, with a chilling presence seeping into her bones, like invisible chains binding each volunteer, forcing them toward the center of town.

She took a deep breath and gently shook a familiar volunteer beside her, "Ms. Li, snap out of it! This isn't normal—stop!"

The woman gave no reaction, continuing to walk in a daze, her steps stiff, her gaze vacant. Alina's heart pounded; this wasn't something she could counter with conventional means.

Knowing she had to act fast, Alina stepped back, moving cautiously behind the group and using the wall as cover, observing her surroundings. The steady rhythm of the bell felt like it was pounding against her mind, but she fought back, determined to stay rational and think of a plan.

"We have to get out before it's too late, or this bell will consume everyone here," she muttered, casting a quick glance at the volunteers slipping deeper into the bell's control. She made a silent vow: no matter what, she would escape, uncover the truth of this bell, and save the others if possible.

Stepping backward, she noticed that the path toward the town's exit was shrouded in shadows, as though a barrier blocked it, making her hesitate. The bell's tolls grew louder, the pressure intensifying, tugging at her spirit with each beat, making her vision blur.

"No… I can't fall here." Alina took a steadying breath, forcing herself to stay alert. Her fingers closed around the pendant she always wore since her return, a talisman that seemed to carry a faint warmth, grounding her against the bell's invasive pull.

Around her, several volunteers had fallen completely under the bell's influence, moving slowly and stiffly toward the center of town. She resisted the urge to panic, knowing that fear would only make her more vulnerable. She had to find a way to break this control or else everyone here would be lost.

She quietly approached one of the volunteers, trying to rouse him. "Xiao Wang, wake up! Don't follow the bell!" She gently shook him, but he remained unresponsive, his face blank, his gaze hollow.

"Damn that bell…" Alina whispered, cold sweat gathering on her forehead. This was no ordinary spell; it felt like the assault of a spirit, preying on their deepest fears.

"I have to get them out of here…" Alina steadied herself, vowing to find a way to counter this eerie force. Clutching her pendant tightly, she reminded herself that neither the apocalypse nor her past trials had broken her resolve.

Moving forward, she knew she had to find the source of the bell. If it was part of some ritual, there would be a focal point—a place where its power originated. Alina knew that every second mattered. If she delayed, these volunteers' souls might be forever trapped under this sinister control.

After moving through several dilapidated buildings, she found herself in an abandoned square. In its center stood a giant, decrepit clock tower. The tolling originated from within, filling the air with a haunting resonance. Despite its neglected appearance, the tower's sound was steady and powerful, like the voice of a ghostly summoning.

"So this is the source…" Alina murmured, understanding the risk but knowing she couldn't retreat. Steeling herself, she began ascending the tower steps, each one bringing her closer to the bell's powerful sound.

Ethan Hess stood on the edge of Everstar Town, his expression grim as he silently observed the desolate, eerie town before him. As he drew closer, a sense of oppression tightened around his chest, while the deep tolling of the bells resounded, disturbing his thoughts. He had heard such sounds before, though it had been long ago—yet the familiar chill made him instinctively furrow his brows.

"This sound… it's the same as back then." His voice was barely a whisper, his gaze hardening as the coldness in his eyes deepened. The dark power lurking within the chimes unsettled him, but his years of experience kept him steady, unaffected by the pull. To him, the sound was more of a challenge—a lure, daring him to enter the unknown danger.

Ethan stepped forward, his gaze scanning the town's abandoned buildings and decayed streets. The silence felt unnatural, as if countless unseen spirits lingered in the air, surging with the bell's echo. He knew this wasn't just a peculiar phenomenon but part of a larger scheme, one that awaited him to walk deeper into its trap.

He closed his eyes briefly, holding his breath, attempting to identify the source of the bells and the hidden force behind them. There was more than oppression within the tolls; an almost hypnotic power mingled in the sound, but Ethan's formidable will forced it out. As the tolling grew clearer, so too did his understanding of the threat before him.

"So be it. Let's see what you have planned." His voice was quiet, his eyes resolute. Ethan stepped further into the town, fixing his gaze on the distant clock tower, as though it were his fated destination. He knew his journey, which he had once tried to leave behind, had finally come full circle, and there would be no turning back.

With every step, the tolling of the bells grew louder, like a chorus of spirits in the darkness, calling him closer. He advanced with calm determination, facing the toll's powerful grip, as though each step marked his acceptance of the fate that awaited him.
