Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Descent Into The Abyss

The morning sun cast its golden light upon the restless waves, and at their edge stood Emma-the wind carried with it the salty tang of the sea. Behind her, the village teemed with life, oblivious to the great journey she and Leo were about to embark on. The pendant at her neck pulsed softly, reminding her of the secrets it held and the path laid before them.

Leo fell into step beside her, the straps of their diving gear adjusted with practiced ease. "This is our last chance to back out," he said-half jest, yet with an edge of sincerity.

Emma glanced at him, the corners of her mouth lifting in a small, determined smile. "Backing out isn't an option. Whatever we find down there, we need to know.

Leo nodded, his face softening to a look of resolution. The two waded into the water, each step pulling them into the cool embrace of the sea. The world seemed to hold its breath as they moved further out, the sounds of the village fading until all that remained was the rhythmic crash of waves and the beating of Emma's heart.

Emma uncorked the vial of Essence of Tidal Breath; the liquid inside shone as bright as liquid starlight. She drank, and the cold burn coursed through her lungs before settling into a strange, calming warmth. She handed it to Leo, who also drank, grimacing slightly at the taste, then nodded. They exchanged a brief, reassuring look before submerging themselves beneath the waves.

The shift from air to water was immediate, the sunbeams filtering down in fractured beams and bathing the underwater world in shades of blue and green. Schools of fish darted past, glinting as with living jewels, while seaweed swayed in the current like dancers arrested in a perpetual waltz. Emma felt another pulse of energy from the pendant, urging her deeper, where the light gave way to shadows and the unknown.

Leo kicked ahead, his strokes carrying him deeper into the darkening depths; Emma followed, her only light the soft glow of the pendant. The water was growing colder with every meter of their descent, and it seemed to press in around them like a living thing. There was no noise, except the rhythmic thrum of their breathing, the soft rush of bubbles.

And then, after an eternity, a pale blue glow appeared beneath them, its light growing stronger as they descended. Emma's heart quickened as the entrance to the Temple of Aetherial Waters, carved from the sea floor itself, finally materialized: an ancient structure featuring coral pillars and runes that pulsed with life. There were statues of mythical sea creatures guarding it, their stone eyes glimmering with opalescent shells that reflected the light back in a mesmeric play of colors.

He reached out, his fingers brushing against one of the runes. It shifted at his touch, glowing brighter before dimming once more. He turned to Emma, his face awash in a mixture of amazement and unease.

"It's beautiful," he mouthed, bubbles issuing from his lips and drifting upward.

Emma nodded once. A moment was all she needed to steady herself. The pendant brightened even more, guiding their gaze to an inscription carved into the arch above the entrance. Ancient runes moved around, shifting into words they could read: Only the bearer of light and their chosen shall enter. Leave behind doubt, or be consumed by the depths.

Emma's gaze locked with Leo's, the weight of what they had to do settling heavy upon them. She breathed in slowly and stepped over the threshold into the temple, bubbles tailing up from her mouth as she moved. A weird current cut through the water a second later, and on its leading edge, a deep resonance hummed in her bones, making her muscles go tense.

The interior of the temple was a grand, sprawling chamber with towering columns carved with scenes of battle and triumph. They were so intricate that Emma felt the figures might step out of the stone at any moment. Winged warriors of light clashed against dark, shadowy figures whose eyes seemed to burn with a malignant fire. It was a story told through stone, ancient and tragic.

Leo edged up beside her, his eyes wide as he took in the room. "These carvings… it's a history, isn't it?" His voice was muffled by the water and came out filled with a ring of awe.

Emma nodded, her fingers tracing over an image of a robed figure clenching a pendant just like hers. "It's more than history. It's a warning." Turning, the radiance of the pendant brightened, illuminating an altar at the chamber's center. The altar itself was straightforward but imposing, a shallow basin in the middle which shimmered as if filled with light.

They swam closer; the complete, eerie silence was broken by a soft hum issuing from the altar. Emma reached out a hand, hesitating, for the pull from the pendant was unusual. The air shifted around them, and a low voice, resonating deep within the chamber, filled the space.

"Why have you come, Keeper of the Light?"

Emma's eyes widened as if the water around them seemed to vibrate with the voice. The statue of a robed figure behind the altar had begun to glow and its eyes flashed alive with an intense blue light. Leo gripped her arm, muscles tense.

We seek the truth," Emma said, her voice steady despite the fear that clawed at her chest. "The secrets of this temple, and the power that lies within. We need it to protect our home.

The radiance of his eyes in the statue flickered, and for a moment, there was silence. Then, the voice returned firmer and more ominous: "To claim the light, you must prove yourself worthy. Only those with unyielding hearts and pure intentions can wield its power.

With the dissolving words, so too did the chamber around them dissolve. The water chilled, and darkness oozed from the walls, collected on the floor, and formed into life. Beings with eyes aglow and bodies fluid as quicksilver emerged from the gathered masses, their presence weighted with malevolence.

Leo clutched his dagger tighter and fixed his eyes on the oncoming figures. "Looks like we've got company," he growled, pushing between Emma and the advancing shadows.

As Emma lifted her hands, willing the power of the pendant to spring alive, her heart began to quicken with anticipation. In an instant, the warm glow turned brilliant; a beam of light shot out and pierced one of the shadow creatures. It shrieked silently, dissolved into dark wisps that disappeared in the water.

But for every one that fell, even more seemed to rise in its place. Silent cries from the shadows echoed through the chamber as they closed in, surrounding Emma and Leo.
