Chapter 2 - DEATH 1

[Catastrophic Car Accident in Central Halkwall Leaves Five Dead, Two Survivors]

As the first vestige of day shown through Halkwall, the people were greeted with the most devastating news broadcast.

The report detailed a devastating scene of a truck throwing a car off the bridge and multiple other cars crashing on the said truck. It was said that the truck driver seemed to be at high speed and crashed a car in the next lane, leading to the death of many others in their cars too.

Amongst the seven victims, two had survived one of them being Harlow Blackwood. Now rushed into the emergency room as her body was bruised and most bones broken.

Harlow's mind was drifting into semi-consciousness despite the numerous noises from the emergency room and the sounds coming from the different machines inserted into her body. Her vision was blurred, but she could still make count of a man in white attire and some other women around her.

"Her blood pressure is dropping." She heard the faint voice of a woman as the woman's words floated like whispers through the fog of her fading consciousness. The sounds around her grew distant, muffled as if she were slipping into another world, a world where time moved slowly, and reality blurred at the edges.

"Prepare an adrenaline shot." She heard the doctor's voice from a distance. "We need to save her before we lose her." He completed.

Her hand held a cold substance firmly. Her phone. Amidst her confused and disorganized state, she still recognized what it was.

"Al..." Harlow barely made a sound. She was too weak to speak. She pressed a button, "The subscriber you're dialing cannot be reached at the moment. Please leave a message."

She had dialed Alanis's number countless times before, each dial an unanswered prayer.

"Alanis where are you?' the thought had been in her mind since the accident.

Her accident was no news anymore as the news had gone around the city.

The world knew, yet he remained silent.

Why was he doing this? Is it because of the divorce? She was ready to divorce him now, all she wanted was for him to check on their son.

Amidst the worry, the nurse noticed a phone in her hands and snatched it away.

"Let's put this down for now sweet sweetheart." She heard the nurse's voice.

"Alanis, Alex..." Harlow mumbled. Those two people are her world, yet they aren't by her side now.

Harlow's eyes fluttered, fighting the sleep and struggling to stay awake, "I need... I need..."

"It's alright ma'am, you need to sleep now. You'll be fine by morning." The nurse's faint words rang again and in the next moment her eyes fluttered close and all she could see was darkness as she slowly lost consciousness.

Harlow's consciousness stirred up as the shrill ring of her phone broke through the empty room.

The soft, concerned presence of the nurse standing at her bedside gave her her phone saying. "Sorry for waking you up, but a call came for you, I think it's important." The nurse said thoughtfully.

"Would you want me to answer it for you?"

"I'll take it." Her voice was barely above another whisper as she said those words.

She managed to sit up amidst the heavy pain she felt and grabbed her phone from the nurse. If it was important, then she should be the one answering it. She stared at the unknown number and answered the call.

"Mrs Hamilton, you promised to be here for your son's surgery." At the doctor's words, Harlow's consciousness began to come back, and as if she recalled everything she jumped out of bed and was about to leave when the nurse stopped her.

"Take it easy ma'am, the doctor said not to get out of bed." The nurse tried to explain, but Harlow shook her head.

Her son... Alex...

How could she forget? Alex is the reason she was involved in an accident. His surgery was scheduled for last night, she was rushing over after attending to Grandma Hamilton when she got a call. She wanted to be at least there for her son since Alanis was too busy. Harlow's eyes turned moist as she recalled everything.

Right now she didn't care about her pain, all she cared about was her son. She hoped he was okay. Alex's mood yesterday had been gloomy, he cried throughout the day, angry that his father wasn't there with him.

Alex has been admitted to the hospital for weeks now, his chronic heart disease has gotten worse and he needed medical attention. Each time she tried to tell Alanis he would always brush it off and accuse her of using her son for mind games.

"Miss Hamilton." The doctor called from the line and she quickly placed the phone back in her ears.

"I'm on my way there, tell Alex I'll be there shortly," Harlow said. She turned to the nurse mouthing a question to her. "What hospital is this?" She asked.

"It is Prestiges Coup." The nurse replied and she sighed in relief. She was in the same hospital as her son, she would just ask them to transfer him to her ward so that they could stay together.

"Miss Hamilton ." The doctor called again and Harlow was about to speak but was cut short by the doctor.

"Don't bother too much, Alex didn't make it through the night."
