So why was Neonidas planning to advance the army on foot when teleportation portals existed? The answer was simple: teleportation portals were extremely expensive. Each person passing through a teleportation portal consumed Mana, the expensive fuel used by the portal. Transporting fifty thousand soldiers through a teleportation portal to another location would probably mean spending tens of thousands of gold.
