Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 17: FRACTURED LOYALTY

The following day, Riele stood in front of her mirror, staring at her reflection with a mix of determination and apprehension. Her mother's words from the previous night echoed in her mind, a sharp reminder of the weight on her shoulders. She was an asset, a tool, her mother's means to secure leverage over Jace's father. Yet, every time she looked into Jace's eyes, she felt that resolve slipping, her loyalty fracturing beneath the pull of her emotions.

When she arrived at school, Riele spotted Jace leaning against his car in the parking lot, his posture casual but his expression tinged with something she couldn't quite place. As she approached, he looked up, his gaze softening as he took her in.

"Hey, Felix," he greeted her, his tone light but his eyes filled with an unspoken question. "Got a minute?"

She nodded, her pulse quickening as she followed him to a secluded corner of the school grounds. The silence between them grew thick, each step amplifying the tension that seemed to have taken root in their interactions. Finally, Jace stopped, turning to face her.

"I need to ask you something," he began, his voice low, almost hesitant. "I've been noticing… well, it feels like you're holding back. Like there's something you're not telling me."

Riele's heart skipped a beat, a surge of panic twisting in her chest. She forced herself to stay calm, to keep the mask firmly in place. "What do you mean?"

Jace ran a hand through his hair, frustration flashing in his eyes. "It's just… I don't know. Sometimes, it feels like I'm talking to two different people. The person I see when we're alone and the person you are with everyone else."

She swallowed, struggling to find the right words. She could feel the weight of her mother's mission pressing down on her, reminding her that she couldn't afford to let her guard down. But Jace's gaze was so intense, so filled with sincerity, that she felt the urge to tell him everything.

"I'm not hiding anything from you," she replied, her voice barely a whisper. "But… there are parts of me that are complicated."

He studied her for a long moment, his expression softening. "We're all complicated, Felix. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that we can't always carry everything alone."

His words struck a chord deep within her, resonating with a truth she hadn't allowed herself to confront. But just as she felt the walls around her heart beginning to crack, her phone buzzed, breaking the moment.

She glanced down, the message from Marcus pulling her back to reality. "Urgent. Your mother needs you back now."

A sense of dread washed over her. "I have to go," she said, forcing a smile to mask the turmoil within her. "Family stuff."

Jace's expression tightened, but he nodded, understanding flashing in his eyes. "Take care, Felix."

As she walked away, Riele felt the weight of her double life pressing down on her. She was caught between two worlds—the world of loyalty and deception that her mother had forged for her and the fragile connection she was building with Jace. And she knew, deep down, that eventually, one of those worlds would crumble.

---

Back at the mansion, Marcus was waiting for her at the entrance, his expression unreadable as he led her into the main hall. Riele braced herself, her mind racing with possibilities. Her mother rarely called her back so abruptly unless something significant had happened.

When they entered her mother's office, she found her mother seated behind her desk, her gaze cold and calculating as she assessed Riele.

"We have a situation," her mother began without preamble, her tone sharp. "Jace's father has been making inquiries. He's growing suspicious of your connection to his son."

Riele's pulse quickened, a flash of fear slicing through her. She knew the risks of getting close to Jace, but hearing it from her mother's lips made it all too real.

"You need to be more careful," her mother continued, her voice like ice. "If he catches wind of what we're doing, this entire mission could be compromised. And I won't allow that."

Riele forced herself to nod, pushing down the guilt that gnawed at her. "Understood."

But her mother wasn't finished. "I need you to do more than just befriend Jace. I need you to gain his complete trust. Find out everything you can about his father's operations, his alliances, his weaknesses. Do whatever it takes."

The words hung heavy in the air, a chilling reminder of her role in this twisted game. She was a pawn, a weapon her mother wielded in her quest for power. And while part of her wanted to rebel, to walk away from it all, she knew that wasn't an option.

As she left her mother's office, Riele felt a storm of emotions brewing within her. She was caught in a web of loyalty and betrayal, her heart torn between duty and desire. And the more she got to know Jace, the harder it became to ignore the feelings that simmered beneath the surface.

---

The next day, Riele found herself back at school, the weight of her mother's demands pressing down on her. She knew she had to keep her distance, to remind herself of the mission, but the moment she saw Jace, all her resolve seemed to crumble.

"Hey, Felix," he greeted her, a warmth in his gaze that made her chest tighten. "You okay?"

She forced a smile, masking the turmoil within her. "Yeah, just… family stuff, you know?"

He nodded, sympathy flickering in his eyes. "If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here."

The sincerity in his voice nearly undid her. She wanted to tell him everything, to let him see the girl beneath the mask. But she knew that was impossible. The world she lived in wouldn't allow it.

As the day wore on, Riele found herself slipping deeper into her role, carefully extracting information from Jace without revealing her own secrets. She laughed at his jokes, shared stories from her fabricated past, all the while feeling the weight of her deception pressing down on her.

But despite her best efforts, she couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that gnawed at her. She was betraying him, using his trust as a weapon in her mother's war. And with each passing day, the cost of that betrayal grew harder to bear.

---

That evening, as she returned to the mansion, Riele found herself drawn to the study where her mother kept her collection of files and documents. She knew she shouldn't be there, that any breach of her mother's trust could have severe consequences. But a part of her needed answers, a glimpse into the world her mother had built around her.

As she scanned the shelves, her gaze fell on a file labeled "Santoro." Her heart raced as she reached for it, her fingers trembling as she opened it. Inside, she found detailed records, surveillance photos, and intelligence reports—all documenting Jace's family and their operations.

But what caught her eye was a single photograph, tucked at the back of the file. It was a picture of Jace, taken from a distance, his expression solemn as he stood by his father's side.

The sight of him, captured in this cold, detached manner, sent a chill through her. This was the boy she was supposed to betray, the one she was meant to use as a pawn in her mother's game. But as she stared at the photograph, she felt a surge of anger and defiance.

For the first time, Riele questioned the path her mother had set for her. She was tired of being a pawn, tired of living in the shadows of her mother's ambitions. And as she closed the file, a sense of determination took root within her.

She didn't know how or when, but one thing was clear—she would find a way to break free from her mother's control. And maybe, just maybe, she could protect Jace from the darkness that surrounded them both.

But as she slipped out of the study, a sense of dread settled over her. She was playing a dangerous game, one that could cost her everything. And with each passing day, the stakes grew higher, the risks greater.

For now, all she could do was keep moving forward, balancing on the edge of loyalty and betrayal, knowing that one misstep could bring her entire world crashing down.

--- But the main problem was could she really break free from her mom, follow for more .
