The barbecue was a success, filled with laughter, good food, and friendly faces. Jay had a great time getting to know Erin's family and realizing how much they all cared for Erin. As the evening wound down, Erin's parents suggested Jay stay over for the night.
"It's getting late, and you're welcome to sleep over," Mrs. Miller said, her eyes twinkling. "We have a spare room, and you can always use a good night's sleep after all that fun."
Jay was surprised but excited. He had never slept over at a friend's house before, especially not at Erin's. He felt a surge of hope, thinking maybe this was a chance to spend some quality time with Erin, just the two of them.
"Sure, that sounds great," Jay said, trying to hide his excitement. "Thank you."
After everyone else went to bed, Erin led Jay to his room. It was a cozy room, decorated with posters of bands and video games. Jay felt a pang of nostalgia as he looked around, remembering his own room back home.
"Make yourself comfortable," Erin said, handing him a pair of pajamas. "I'll be right back."
Erin left the room, and Jay changed into the pajamas. He felt a little awkward wearing someone else's clothes, but he couldn't help but smile. He was starting to feel more comfortable around Erin, even though he knew their relationship was just a friendship.
Erin came back into the room, holding a bag of chips and a bottle of soda. He sat down on the bed, and Jay joined him. They talked for hours, sharing stories and jokes. Jay felt a sense of ease and comfort as he talked to Erin, and he realized that he was still in love with him.
As the night wore on, they both started to feel tired. Erin yawned and stretched, and Jay knew it was time to go to sleep.
"Thanks for letting me stay over," Jay said, feeling a little sad that the night was coming to an end.
"No problem," Erin said, smiling. "It's been fun."
He turned off the light, and they both settled into their beds. Jay couldn't help but steal a glance at Erin, who was already asleep. He felt a pang of longing, but he knew that he had to accept the truth. Erin was just a friend, and he needed to move on.
