Chapter 21 - The Duke’s Suspicion

The journey to Veridian was quiet, almost somber, as if the looming challenge cast a shadow over every step. Sarina and Rian traveled through dense forests and along winding rivers, passing villages where the people watched them with cautious eyes. The weight of their mission was palpable. They both knew that the kingdom's alliances — and its peace — depended on the outcome of this visit. The Duke of Veridian was not only powerful but also notoriously wary, and convincing him of their peaceful intentions would require careful diplomacy.

As they neared Veridian's borders, Sarina could feel her nerves creeping in. The memories of her past life as a sorceress who once sought power at any cost flickered in the back of her mind. The thought of facing a ruler who despised magic made her uneasy; she would need to tread carefully, her loyalty and sincerity on full display.

"Are you all right?" Rian's voice broke through her thoughts. He was riding beside her, his gaze soft with concern.

Sarina took a breath, glancing at him. "I'm fine. Just… considering what lies ahead. The Duke is a man of tradition and caution. If he senses even a hint of insincerity, this could go terribly wrong."

Rian nodded, his steady gaze reassuring. "Then we'll give him no reason to doubt us. He may be cautious, but he's also a reasonable man. Trust yourself, Sarina. You've changed, and you're here on behalf of the kingdom. You're no longer bound by the shadows."

She managed a small smile, taking strength from his words. She had spent so much time fighting to redeem herself, and with Rian's unwavering support, she felt that redemption might truly be within reach.

They arrived at Veridian's grand estate just as the sun was beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the sprawling grounds. The estate was magnificent, a sprawling fortress of stone and iron, with banners bearing the duke's crest fluttering in the wind. Sarina was greeted by Veridian's advisors, their expressions polite but distant, their eyes sharp as they assessed her.

The Duke of Veridian himself awaited them in the main hall. He was a tall, imposing man with graying hair and a stern expression, his gaze intense as he watched Sarina approach. His eyes flickered briefly to Rian, but then returned to her, studying her as if he were trying to see into her soul.

"Lady Sarina, Sir Rian," he greeted them, his tone formal. "I trust your journey was pleasant."

Sarina dipped her head respectfully. "It was, Your Grace. We are grateful for your hospitality and the opportunity to discuss our kingdom's intentions."

The duke's expression remained impassive. "Intentions, yes. With recent rumors of your kingdom's strengthened defenses and alliances, it's only natural that I — and others — might wonder if your king's ambitions extend beyond his own borders."

Sarina felt the tension in the room rise, each word laced with underlying suspicion. She forced herself to remain calm, meeting the duke's gaze with steady resolve. "Our intentions are solely to ensure peace and stability, Your Grace. Our alliances and defenses are measures to protect our people from potential threats, not to wage war or expand our borders."

The duke's gaze hardened, his mouth a thin line. "Forgive me if I struggle to believe that a kingdom as fortified as yours has no ambition beyond mere protection. I have heard stories, Lady Sarina, tales of dark magic that once tainted your kingdom. Stories of sorcerers who would do anything for power."

Her heart skipped a beat, a chill running down her spine. She could feel the duke's gaze on her, sharp and unyielding, and she knew that he was testing her, searching for any sign of deception.

Sarina took a steadying breath, her voice calm but resolute. "Those tales belong to a past that our kingdom has left behind. I know that magic has been a source of fear, and I understand your caution. But I am here to show you that we have chosen a different path, a path built on trust, loyalty, and respect for all kingdoms."

The duke's gaze did not waver. "Perhaps. But words alone cannot erase the past, Lady Sarina. I have seen powerful people make promises before, only to turn their backs the moment it suited them. If your intentions are indeed as noble as you claim, you will need to prove it."

Sarina felt a flicker of frustration but kept her composure. She knew that gaining the duke's trust would not be easy, and she was willing to do whatever it took to show him the truth of her intentions.

"What would you ask of me, Your Grace?" she inquired, her tone unwavering.

The duke studied her for a moment, as though weighing her sincerity. "Tomorrow, you will meet with several advisors and leaders of Veridian. They, too, have concerns about your kingdom's intentions. If you can convince them of your loyalty and sincerity, perhaps I will consider your request for continued alliance."

Sarina nodded, understanding the challenge he had laid before her. It was a test, one that would require every ounce of her patience, diplomacy, and honesty.

"Thank you, Your Grace," she replied. "I welcome the opportunity to speak with them."

The duke gave a curt nod, his gaze shifting to Rian. "Sir Rian, I trust you will accompany Lady Sarina in these discussions."

Rian inclined his head, his voice respectful. "Of course, Your Grace. I am here to support her in every way."

The duke's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained guarded. "Then I suggest you both rest. Tomorrow will be a long day."

The next morning, Sarina awoke with a sense of anticipation, her mind focused on the task ahead. She knew that she would need to address the lingering fears of Veridian's leaders, to reassure them that her kingdom posed no threat. It was a delicate line to walk, one that would require complete transparency — even if it meant exposing parts of her own past.

As she prepared herself, Rian entered, his expression thoughtful. "Are you ready?"

She took a breath, nodding. "As ready as I can be. I know this won't be easy, but I'll do whatever it takes to show them the truth."

Rian stepped closer, his gaze filled with quiet support. "You don't have to do this alone, Sarina. I'll be there with you, every step of the way."

His words filled her with a sense of calm, grounding her as they made their way to the main hall, where the duke's advisors awaited them. The hall was filled with voices, the leaders of Veridian gathered in small groups, their expressions a mixture of skepticism and curiosity as they watched Sarina and Rian approach.

The duke introduced Sarina to his advisors, their faces a blend of doubt and caution. She could feel their suspicion, their mistrust of her and the kingdom she represented, and it reminded her of the journey she had taken to redeem herself. This, too, would be a test of her loyalty and sincerity.

One of the advisors, a stern woman with piercing eyes, spoke first. "Lady Sarina, you speak of peace, yet your kingdom has gathered strength, formed alliances, and fortified its borders. Why should we believe you have no intentions of expansion?"

Sarina met the woman's gaze, her voice calm. "Strengthening our defenses does not mean we seek war. Our kingdom has faced its own trials, its own battles with dark forces. We are simply ensuring that our people are safe, that no threat can undo the peace we have fought so hard to build."

Another advisor, a tall man with a skeptical expression, crossed his arms. "And what of the rumors of dark magic? Can you deny that such magic was once practiced within your kingdom?"

Sarina felt the weight of his question, the unspoken accusation lingering in the air. She took a breath, deciding to face the truth head-on.

"Yes," she said, her voice steady. "Dark magic once tainted our kingdom, and I know that better than anyone. I, too, have faced that darkness, and I have chosen to turn away from it. I have spent every day since then working to protect the kingdom, to ensure that no shadow of that past can ever threaten us again."

The hall fell silent, the advisors exchanging uncertain glances. Rian stepped forward, his gaze resolute as he addressed them.

"I have witnessed Lady Sarina's commitment firsthand," he said, his voice filled with quiet conviction. "She has faced her past and chosen a path of redemption. She has proven her loyalty not just to our kingdom but to every alliance we've built. She is here to protect, not to conquer."

The sincerity in Rian's voice seemed to resonate with the advisors, and Sarina could feel the tension in the room beginning to ease. She looked at the duke, meeting his gaze with an openness that she hoped conveyed the depth of her commitment.

"Your Grace," she said, her voice filled with quiet determination, "I stand before you not as someone seeking power, but as someone seeking peace. I am here to serve, to protect, and to prove that our kingdom is a true ally, not a threat. I ask only for your trust, so that we may continue to build a future of unity and strength."

The duke's expression remained guarded, but she could see a flicker of understanding in his eyes. He looked at his advisors, who gave subtle nods of approval, their expressions softening.

Finally, the duke turned back to her, his gaze thoughtful. "Lady Sarina, you have spoken with honesty and conviction. Perhaps you truly are the ally we need."
