Chapter 10 - A Pact of Shadows

The morning sun rose over the castle, casting long beams of light into Sarina's chambers, yet its warmth felt hollow. She lay awake, her mind turning over the events of the night. She had made a pact with a fellow sorcerer — a man whose name she still didn't know, who wore his dark magic like a shroud, and whose power both intrigued and unsettled her. He had promised her the Eclipse Stone, but in exchange, she had aligned herself with a stranger whose true intentions were as murky as the shadows she commanded.

The pact was a risk, yet it was also her only way forward. She was slipping further into the heart of darkness, and now, with an ally by her side, she felt both emboldened and ensnared.

Later that morning, as Sarina moved through the halls, she noticed that the tension within the castle was growing more palpable. Whispers of the creatures at the border had spread, infecting every corner of the court with unease. Servants murmured about dark magic, and the nobles eyed one another with suspicion, as though any one of them could be harboring secrets.

She kept her expression calm, playing Elara's role with practiced ease, but she could feel the shift in the air. If the kingdom's trust continued to unravel, it would only be a matter of time before eyes turned to her. Her new ally's plan would have to begin soon — she couldn't afford to wait much longer.

As she turned a corner, she saw Rian approaching from the opposite end of the hallway, his expression troubled. Her heart quickened. Since their journey to the border, his doubts had become increasingly apparent, and she knew she would have to tread carefully around him if she wanted to keep his trust.

"Good morning, Rian," she greeted, infusing warmth into her voice.

He returned her smile, but his eyes held a hint of unease. "Elara," he replied, his voice soft but guarded. "I was hoping to speak with you… privately."

Her pulse quickened, but she kept her face serene. "Of course," she replied, gesturing for him to lead the way.

They walked in silence to one of the castle's smaller gardens, a secluded spot filled with flowering trees and stone benches. Once they were alone, Rian turned to her, his gaze intense, a mix of worry and something deeper that she couldn't quite place.

"Elara… something's been troubling me since our journey to the border," he began, his voice low. "Those creatures… the way they looked at us, the way they retreated. It felt… unnatural."

She forced herself to meet his gaze, channeling every ounce of Elara's gentle innocence. "I felt it too," she replied softly, allowing a touch of vulnerability to slip into her voice. "It was as if they recognized us."

Rian's eyes darkened, and he took a step closer. "But why? What could make such creatures hesitate? They seemed bound to something, or someone."

Her heart pounded, but she kept her expression steady. "Perhaps they sensed our strength," she suggested. "Or maybe they were driven by fear."

He regarded her for a long moment, his gaze searching her face. "Fear…" he repeated, almost to himself. "But fear of what?"

She felt the tension between them, a silence thick with unspoken words. Rian's faith in her was fraying, and she could see the wariness in his eyes. He had always trusted Elara, had always believed in her, but now that trust was tarnished by doubt — doubt that she had sown in her own pursuit of power.

After a long pause, he spoke again, his voice barely above a whisper. "Elara… I need you to promise me something."

She nodded, feeling the weight of his gaze. "Anything."

"If there's something you're not telling me, something about what we faced at the border…" He hesitated, his expression torn. "Please, trust me enough to be honest. I would stand by you against anything — even against my own doubts."

Her chest tightened, an unfamiliar ache blooming within her. Rian's loyalty was boundless, and she could feel the weight of his words settling over her like a shroud. He was offering her a chance to reveal herself, to cast aside her deception and trust him in return. But that was a path she could never walk, not without risking everything she had sacrificed for.

Forcing herself to smile, she reached out, her hand lightly touching his. "I promise, Rian," she whispered, letting her words ring with sincerity that was only partially feigned. "There's nothing I'm hiding from you."

A flicker of relief crossed his face, and he nodded, his hand closing over hers in a comforting gesture. But as they stood there, she couldn't shake the feeling that her mask was slipping, that her deception was no longer as impenetrable as it once had been.

That night, as the castle quieted, Sarina waited in her chambers, her mind racing with thoughts of her new ally and the pact they had made. She didn't know when he would contact her next, but she could feel his presence lurking in the shadows, like a phantom waiting to strike.

Finally, as the moon rose high in the sky, a flicker of movement caught her eye. She turned to see a familiar figure standing by the open balcony, his dark robes blending with the shadows. The sorcerer had come, his face shrouded, his eyes gleaming in the dim light.

"Good evening, Lady Sarina," he greeted, his voice a smooth whisper that sent a shiver down her spine.

She rose, crossing the room with measured steps. "What news do you have?"

He tilted his head, a faint smile playing on his lips. "The kingdom's defenses grow stronger, but so does the fear within its walls. The king is preparing for war, but he does not know who his enemy truly is."

Sarina felt a thrill at his words. Fear was a weapon, and in a kingdom plagued by doubt and suspicion, she could manipulate it to her advantage. But there was still the matter of the Eclipse Stone, a prize that lay tantalizingly close, yet just beyond her reach.

"How will we reach the Eclipse Stone?" she asked, keeping her voice low. "The wards are bound to the king's bloodline. I cannot break them alone."

The sorcerer's smile widened, his eyes glinting with a dangerous light. "That is where Rian comes in, my dear. His oath to you binds him to your will. He will follow you anywhere, even into the darkest of places."

Sarina's heart skipped a beat at his words. The idea of using Rian, of manipulating his loyalty to achieve her goals, made her feel a pang of guilt, but she forced it down. She couldn't afford to hesitate now — not when she was so close.

"What do you need me to do?" she asked, her voice steady.

"Tomorrow night," he replied, his tone chilling in its calmness, "you will lure Rian to the vault beneath the castle. The wards can only be broken by one of royal blood — or someone who holds their trust. When he enters with you, the Eclipse Stone's defenses will falter. And then, my dear, the power you seek will be ours."

Sarina nodded, though a flicker of doubt stirred within her. She knew Rian would follow her, would do anything she asked, but the thought of leading him into a trap left a bitter taste in her mouth. He had promised to protect her, to stand by her, and she was about to betray that trust in the worst way possible.

The sorcerer seemed to sense her hesitation, his eyes narrowing. "Are you having second thoughts, Lady Sarina?"

She straightened, hardening her resolve. "No. Rian's loyalty is mine to command. He will do as I ask."

"Good," he replied, his voice cold and approving. "Then tomorrow, we shall seize the Eclipse Stone, and the kingdom's fate will be in our hands."

With a final nod, he disappeared into the shadows, leaving her alone in the silence of her chamber. Sarina returned to the window, staring out at the moonlit landscape beyond the castle walls. The pact she had made was set in motion, and by tomorrow night, the Eclipse Stone would be hers. But the price she was about to pay — the betrayal of Rian's trust — weighed heavily on her, like a shadow pressing against her heart.

For a moment, she allowed herself to imagine a different path, a life where she had accepted Rian's offer of loyalty without deception, a life where she was someone else, someone who didn't carry the weight of dark magic and ambition. But such thoughts were a weakness, and she forced them away, reminding herself of the power that lay within her reach.

Tomorrow, she would fulfill her destiny. She would seize the Eclipse Stone, and with it, the throne. And if the price was Rian's trust, then so be it.

As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, Sarina made her final vow to herself: she would become the Queen of Black Magic, no matter what — or who — she had to sacrifice.
