Chapter 2 - The Special Family

---

-10 Years Later-

"Evelyn, wake up! You'll be late for your first day of high school."

Serena opened the door with a worried expression on her face.

"Oh, you're already up!"

With a nervous, excited look, Evelyn was trying to tie up her hair. No matter how carefully she tried, it just wouldn't stay right. Losing patience, Evelyn tossed her hair tie onto the bed. Serena sighed and walked over to help straighten her hair.

"You don't need to tie it up. It looks beautiful just like this."

"Are you sure? What if my hair attracts too much attention?"

Because of her naturally golden hair, Evelyn always drew attention. In the past, she'd wanted to dye it, but Serena had convinced her otherwise, saying it would be a shame to cover up something so beautiful.

"Don't worry, Eve. You'll be just fine. Just relax and enjoy your first day of high school."

"… Do you think I'll make any friends?"

"If you're confident and keep a bright smile, you could become the most popular girl in school."

"Haha, I hope so."

Even though ten years had passed, that day still haunted Evelyn's dreams. The stranger she'd met by chance had completely changed her life, offering her a path she hadn't even known was possible. She never would have dreamed that other special children like her could exist. Including Evelyn, there were seven of them, each with unique abilities. For example, Serena was a 21-year-old college student with the power to heal.

"Hey! What are you two doing? Hurry up; we still have to drop the twins off at elementary school."

This was Marcus. He was also 21, but instead of going to college after high school, he had started working. His special power was creating ice.

"How about being useful for once and taking the twins to school?"

"We can go by ourselves, Sis."

"Don't even think about it."

These were the twins—Nora and Noah. They could use telepathy and telekinesis, though they only used their abilities when they were too lazy to speak.

"I think we're ready to go. Lucian? Where are you, Lucian?"

Realizing that Serena couldn't find Lucian, Marcus quickly went to his room.

"Lucian? Come on, you know you have to go to school, too."

"I don't want to…"

"Look, I know you don't like school, but you have to go."

"But you didn't go to college. I want to quit school too."

"… That's different. You're still in middle school. At least finish high school."

"I don't want to!"

Marcus sighed, getting closer to Lucian.

"Look, I know last year was tough, but I'm sure this year won't be the same. Besides, remember what Shin taught us. We can't run from challenges."

"…Alright."

Reluctantly, Lucian grabbed his bag. Last year had been difficult for him. He'd only told Marcus and the others that his grades were the problem, never mentioning the bullying. Lucian's power allowed him to summon small, animal-like spirits from other dimensions. His gray hair and pale skin often made him a target at school, though he never used his powers in response.

Finally, they all left the house. Marcus dropped off the twins and Lucian at their schools and then headed to work, leaving only Evelyn and Serena.

"I can go on my own from here."

"Are you sure, Eve?"

"Yeah, and you're about to be late for college, so you should hurry."

"Alright, see you tonight then."

After saying goodbye to Serena, Evelyn continued on her way to high school. The closer she got, the more her nervousness grew.
