Chapter 1 - The Dreamer

Once upon a time, Hajun was a regular office worker. He lead the same life as the thousands of people around him.

Work, eat, sleep.

His way of escaping the dreariness of the world, was through novels. His personal preference was always a post-apocalypse type novel. He used to lay in bed and pray for the boring world to come to an end. For the gray cycle of monotony to be broken.

Hajun wished and wished and wished, and finally, his fantasy became his reality.

He stopped separating his dreams from the real world. He truly believed an apolcaypse would arrive, and that he would soon be free.

Despite this 'revelation', he knew he could do nothing but wait for it to arrive, as he prepared slowly.

Lost in thought about the impending apocalypse, Hajun bumped into a burly man and was knocked back, as the man began hurling abuses.

"Watch it, fucker! This suit costs more than what your filthy lower class family can make in a lifetime!"

'Family?' Hajun's family was long gone.

'How had they died again? Was it a fire?'

"Look at this bastard fucking ignoring me after that!"

Hajun let the man ramble on as he struggled to recall his family's death, 'It was.....the monsters.'

'Yes, surely. They died to the monsters to save me. I must survive the apocalypse.'

Hajun was brought back to his current situation as he received a slap across his face, the burly rich man walking away in rage.

'This is fine. After all, he had no idea what kind of apocalypse is coming.'

Hajun entered his office building, his mind working on ways to survive the 'impending doom'.

Immediately, he was reprimanded by his boss, "You bastard! You're late by 15 minutes! If I don't have the reports from the Shanghai project on my desk before lunch, you can kiss your job goodbye!"

A stack of papers was thrown in his face as his boss stormed off to harass someone else.

'Does it really matter now? I'm not even making enough money here to build a proper shelter. The first thing I need to acquire, is money.'

'I can't have that if I keep working here.'

He began collecting the papers, lost in a world of his own, when he noticed another pair of hands helping him. The hands belonged to a beautiful woman, who sat close to his own desk.

'What was her name again? Nevermind, it's irrelevant.'

As she handed him the papers, she was about to talk to him when he turned and walked away, leaving her hanging.

'What's wrong with him today?' She thought before returning to her own work.

One bad day, confirmed his delusions in his mind, removing any thought of seeking help.

Instead of working on the report of the Shanghai project, Hajun began to draft a plan of action.

'First, money. I need money to build a shelter, get supplies and more.'

'Second, fitness. I need to start increasing my physical fitness and combat skills to be able to survive the monsters.'

'Third, survival skills. I need to learn how to identify edible creatures, what is good for me and what isn't.'

Time passed quickly for Hajun. Almost too quickly.

Afternoon had arrived, and the deadline to deliver the report was over. The expected reprimand arrived as well.

"You useless piece of shit! I gave you one job and you can't even do that properly?! Get out of my sight before I fire you, bastard!"

"I quit." Hajun quietly informed his boss about his decision, and put in his papers.

As the man seethed, Hajun left the building, carrying all his belongings in a box as he headed home.

Everywhere he looked, he saw signs of the day of doom. Every shadow seemed to hide a monster within.

Hajun opened the door to his house, an old place his parents left him before they were killed by monsters. The once scenic location was ruined by the large mall right next to his house.

He had held off on selling it when the owner of the mall had wished ot buy his house, claiming it had memories of his parents, but he knew better now.

'Even if I sell the house, it won't be enough for everything. The fastest way to make money is crime.'

As he mechanically prepared some instant noodles to have for dinner, Hajun began to prepare to execute his plans.

................................................................................

Hajun was nothing if not thorough.

He sold his house to the mall owner, despite having to beg him for it. Pride wasn't a luxury when the apocalypse was coming after all.

With that new sum of money, Hajun began setting up various sources of income.

Such as this-

"A-And you'll give me all of it?" A disheveled, clearly homeless and elderly man asked Hajun, as he stared at the cash in his hand.

Hajun replied, "Yes. All of it."

This was the fourth non-alcoholic or hopelessly drug-addicted beggar he met the whole day.

As well as the fourth kidney, blood, and liver tissue samples he had harvested.

'This is surprisingly difficult.' Hajun lamented as he haphazardly cut open the man's side, spreading his ribs with his gloved hands as he tore apart some of his liver.

'Thankfully, there was a tutorial on this online. I don't think they're supposed to be bleeding this much though.'

'Well, I could care less about what happens to them. They'll all die in the apocalypse anyway. In a way, I'm doing them a favour.'

This wasn't enough for him. He soon began hiring thugs and personnel to automate the organ trafficking, as he used another company of his own to smuggle the organs through.

The company he held under his name was a small electronic appliance manufacturer, specializing in refrigerators.

He wasn't scared of being caught by the police, especially since he would be freed on the day of apocalypse.

He expanded past organ trafficking as well.

"So what you're saying is, you want to join hands with us?" A well built high schooler was reclining on top of another kid, who was doing his best to act as a chair.

And so Hajun began using the children as drug mules, giving their schools free trips to foreign locations sponsored by his company.

'Such scum shouldn't be living well anyway. They're the first to die in an apocalypse.' Hajun never thought of anybody around him as a 'human'. Just beings who would die in the apocalypse anyway.

His twisted worldview let him grow his crime empire further, until the government finally noticed his organization.

Despite their best efforts, they could not stamp him out. He sacrificed and abandoned his subordinates, but not his partners. Eventually, the government began a reluctant coexistence with him, after an extensive amount of 'gifts'.

His organization spread wider, devouring other such syndicates, dabbling in everything from rare species smuggling to drugs.

Despite all this, Hajun still believed he was a good person.

After all- 'Everyone will become equal once more in the apocalypse anyway.'
