The forest pulsed with a restless energy, the kind that gnawed at the edge of consciousness and made the hairs on the back of your neck rise.
Moonstone Vale wasn't quiet anymore. Its breathless silence had been replaced by a hum, low, resonant, and alive. Glowing fissures carved through the earth like veins, their faint blue light throbbing with the beat of something primal.
Skyler stood by the altar, sweat glistening on her brow as she steadied her breathing. The magic had drained her, but she didn't dare show weakness. Across the clearing, Noah leaned casually against a tree, his blond hair falling loose over his eyes, but his posture was deceptive. His gaze was locked on the cracks in the ground, unblinking, as if he could will the magic into submission.
"It's done," Skyler said finally, her voice cutting through the charged air. "The curse is broken."
Noah's lips twisted into a humorless smirk. "Yeah. And now the Vale feels like it's alive and pissed off."
Skyler shot him a sharp look, but she didn't argue. He wasn't wrong. The energy pulsing through the ground didn't feel like freedom. It felt like fury.
"We did the right thing," she said, though the words sounded hollow. "The curse was killing the magic. We didn't have a choice."
Noah pushed off the tree and crouched by one of the glowing fissures. He pressed his hand to the earth, his jaw tightening as the energy pulsed against his skin. "Right. No choice. Except now it feels like the Vale is about to swallow us whole."
Skyler crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on the cracks. The curse had been suffocating the Vale, but this, this was something else. Something wild, unstable. She couldn't shake the feeling they'd traded one disaster for another.
"We need to go back," she said, her voice firm. "The covens have to know what's happening."
Noah snorted and rose to his feet, brushing dirt from his hands. "Sure. You think they'll thank us? They'll probably burn us at the stake."
"Then let them try," Skyler snapped. "I don't care what they think of me. The truth doesn't wait for permission."
Noah's smirk returned, tinged with something darker. "You always did like playing hero."
She ignored him, turning toward the path back to the Jasper Coven. "Just try not to die before I see you again."
His voice followed her, laced with dry amusement. "No promises."
The Jasper Coven's sanctuary was cloaked in an eerie stillness when Skyler returned. Whispers rippled through the gathered witches as she strode through the gates, their eyes darting to her like she carried the plague. Skyler kept her head high, walking straight to the council circle where Elder Althea waited, her sharp eyes gleaming with suspicion.
"You return," Althea said coldly. "And you bring the stink of reckless magic with you. What have you done?"
Skyler didn't flinch. "The curse is broken. Moonstone Vale is free."
Gasps spread through the gathered witches like wildfire. Elder Meryn, softer in tone but no less commanding, stepped forward, her brow furrowed.
"You broke the curse?" she asked quietly. "Without consulting the council?"
"We didn't have time," Skyler said sharply. "The curse wasn't protecting us. It was poisoning the Vale. It had to be done."
"And now?" Althea's voice rose, slicing through the murmurs. "What chaos have you unleashed?"
Skyler took a breath, forcing calm into her voice. "The Vale is alive again, but it's unstable. Something is stirring, something tied to the magic. We need answers before it's too late."
The witches broke into frantic whispers. Skyler caught a glimpse of fear in their eyes and felt her stomach tighten. The council wasn't just skeptical. They were terrified.
"I tried casting a protection spell yesterday," a younger witch named Iris blurted out, her voice trembling. "It backfired. The magic, it's… wild."
"Enough," Althea barked, silencing the girl. Her glare landed on Skyler, cold and sharp. "Magic is fragile because of fools who meddle with what they don't understand."
Skyler's fists clenched. "The curse was the problem, not me. And if we don't act now, the Vale will destroy us."
Meryn laid a gentle hand on Althea's arm. "Let her go. If she's right, we need to know. And if she's wrong… we'll deal with it."
Althea's silence was grudging, but Skyler didn't wait for further permission. She turned and left, the weight of their judgment pressing on her back.
The Obsidian Circle's lair was colder, darker, and brimming with tension. Purple flames flickered in iron sconces, casting shadows that twisted and danced as Noah stepped inside. Warlocks turned to watch him, their faces guarded. At the center stood Elder Ezra, his staff glowing faintly.
"You return," Ezra said, his voice like a blade. "What disaster have you brought us this time?"
Noah didn't rise to the bait. "The curse is broken. The Vale is free."
Ezra's eyes narrowed to slits. "You fool. Do you even comprehend what you've done?"
"I understand plenty," Noah shot back. "The curse wasn't saving us, it was killing the Vale."
Ezra slammed his staff against the ground, the sound echoing through the cavern. "The curse was a shield. Without it, the Vale's magic will turn on us all."
Noah met his gaze, unflinching. "Then maybe it's time we faced the consequences of what we've done to this place."
Talon, a younger warlock, hesitated before stepping forward. "He's right," he said quietly. "The curse wasn't balance, it was a cage."
Ezra's glare could've turned him to ash. "You think balance is safe? Balance is control. And now we have none."
Ezra turned his scorn back to Noah. "When the Vale consumes us, I'll make sure everyone knows who's to blame."
Noah's jaw tightened, but he said nothing. Turning, he stalked deeper into the lair, the whispers of unease following him.
That night, the Vale whispered.
Skyler sat by her window in the Jasper sanctuary, the air heavy with tension. The journal on her desk glowed faintly, but she ignored it. Then she heard it—a voice, soft and broken, seeping into her mind.
"The balance is shattered… the past awakens…"
Across the Vale, Noah stared into the dying embers of a fire. The same voice coiled around him, low and venomous.
"The shadows remember… they hunger…"
They both felt the pull. And neither hesitated.
When they reached Moonstone Vale, the air crackled with energy. Skyler was the first to step into the clearing, her eyes narrowing as she spotted Noah.
"You again," she said flatly. "Didn't your coven tell you to stay out of trouble?"
Noah smirked. "They tried. I wasn't in the mood to listen."
Before she could retort, the ground trembled. The glowing cracks brightened, the hum of magic rising into a deafening crescendo. Then it came, a shadow, dark and formless, rising from the earth. Its voice slithered into their minds.
"You've broken the balance. The Forgotten do not forgive."
Skyler's hands ignited with magic, her voice steady despite the fear knotting in her chest. "Who are you? What do you want?"
The shadow hissed, its form flickering. "You meddle with forces beyond your control. Return what you've taken… or be devoured."
Before either of them could respond, the shadow lashed out, a wave of energy throwing them to the ground. By the time they scrambled to their feet, it was gone.
Skyler's voice was barely above a whisper. "What does it mean, 'return what you've taken'?"
Noah's jaw clenched as he brushed dirt from his hands. "Whatever it is, I'm guessing we're not going to like it."
The Vale's hum deepened, the air thick with anticipation. Whatever they'd unleashed wasn't finished with them yet.
