Chereads / Adventure With Lumine / Chapter 20 - Trials of the Abyss

Chapter 20 - Trials of the Abyss

The dark forest eventually gave way to rocky paths, leading them deeper into the heart of Liyue. Asher and Lumine traveled together in silence, still feeling the lingering effects of the battle with the shadows. The distant sound of rushing water grew louder as they approached a river with cascading waterfalls, the mist casting faint rainbows in the air. The beauty of the scene provided a temporary solace, but both knew the dangers lurking ahead.

As they rested by the riverbank, Paimon floated nearby, her usual cheer dimmed by recent events. She looked over at Lumine, noticing her contemplative gaze fixed on the horizon.

"Lumine, what's on your mind?" Paimon asked softly.

Lumine glanced over at Asher before replying. "We've come so far, but it feels like every step forward just leads to more darkness. The Abyss is relentless. And… I can't help but think about my brother."

Asher watched her carefully, feeling her pain as if it were his own. He reached out, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. "We'll find him, Lumine. No matter how many shadows or trials come our way, we'll face them together."

Lumine met his gaze, and for a moment, her worry seemed to melt away. "Thank you, Asher. You always know how to lift my spirits."

As they continued their journey, they came across an ancient stone archway, half-hidden by vines and weathered by time. Strange carvings covered the stone, symbols that seemed to pulse faintly with energy, as if guarding secrets from an age long past. The air around it crackled with a dark energy, unmistakably connected to the Abyss.

"This place…" Lumine murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "It feels like something is waiting for us here."

Asher nodded, gripping his weapon tightly. "Be ready for anything."

They stepped through the archway, and the atmosphere shifted immediately. Shadows slithered across the ground, converging into dark figures with glowing eyes, blocking their path. The figures moved with unnatural fluidity, their twisted forms radiating malice.

Lumine and Asher readied their weapons, standing side by side as the creatures closed in. They fought with synchronized precision, their movements almost instinctive, as if their bond granted them a shared rhythm. Each swing of Lumine's blade and every burst of Asher's energy struck true, dispelling the shadows one by one.

Asher's abilities surged with newfound intensity, each strike radiating light that seemed to weaken the Abyssal creatures. Lumine watched him in awe, feeling her admiration and affection for him deepen with every battle. Despite the darkness surrounding them, she felt a warmth blossoming in her heart—a feeling that grew stronger with each glance in Asher's direction.

When the last creature fell, the silence that followed was almost deafening. Asher turned to Lumine, breathing heavily but with a determined smile. "We make a pretty good team, don't we?"

She smiled back, her expression softening as she met his eyes. "Yes, we do. I don't know how I'd have made it this far without you, Asher."

They continued their journey, moving deeper into the cavernous path beyond the archway. The walls were adorned with murals depicting ancient battles, warriors clashing against shadowy figures resembling the creatures they had just fought. Lumine traced her fingers over the carvings, feeling the weight of history pressing down upon her.

"Do you think this was… a warning?" Asher asked, studying the mural.

"Perhaps," Lumine replied, her tone solemn. "The Abyss has plagued this world for centuries. It's possible that these ancient people fought the same battles we're facing now."

Asher nodded, a sense of unease settling over him. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking in the footsteps of those who had come before, facing a darkness that was both ancient and unrelenting.

Later that night, they made camp near a cliff overlooking the mist-shrouded mountains. The stars shone brightly above, casting a soft glow over their small campfire. Lumine sat beside Asher, both of them lost in thought as they gazed at the night sky.

Asher broke the silence. "Lumine… I don't know what the future holds, but I want you to know that… I'll be here for you, no matter what."

Lumine turned to him, her expression unreadable. She looked into his eyes, feeling a warmth and sincerity in his words that left her momentarily speechless. Slowly, she reached out, her hand resting over his.

"Asher," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Thank you… for everything."

They sat there in silence, hands intertwined, the world around them fading away as they shared a quiet moment under the stars. It was a small gesture, but in that simple touch, Lumine felt a flicker of something more—a hint of feelings she hadn't acknowledged until now.

As the fire crackled softly, she glanced at Asher, her heart beating faster than she cared to admit.
