Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Shadow of Doubt

**Part 1: Into the Labyrinth**

**Neo-Tokyo's rain-soaked streets reflected the neon glow of the city, casting eerie patterns on the pavement. The Phantom Bureau's team—Kaito Nakamura, Rika Harada, and Miyu Takeda—prepared for their next mission: a visit to the research facility of Dr. Haruto Nishida. This facility, located in a quieter district of the city, was rumored to be a hub for cutting-edge neural engineering research.**

**As they approached the facility, the building loomed ahead—a modern structure of glass and steel, designed with clean lines and a sleek appearance. The facility's entrance was guarded by a high-tech security system, a testament to the sensitive nature of the research conducted within.**

"Be prepared for anything," Kaito said, his voice steady. "Dr. Nishida's facility is likely to be heavily protected. We need to gather information discreetly and be ready for any obstacles."

Miyu checked her equipment, her eyes focused. "I'll handle the technical side. I can bypass their security systems if needed. Just make sure to keep an eye out for any physical security measures."

Rika, with her analytical mind always in gear, reviewed the information they had on Dr. Nishida. "Dr. Nishida's research has been controversial. He's known for pushing the boundaries of ethical experimentation. If he's involved with Greaves, he might be more cautious or even hostile."

Kaito nodded. "We need to approach this with care. Our goal is to gather evidence and, if possible, persuade Dr. Nishida to cooperate. Let's proceed."

**Part 2: The Research Facility**

**The team entered the facility's lobby, greeted by a sterile, minimalist design. The space was dominated by a large reception desk, behind which stood a young woman in a professional uniform. She looked up as the team approached, her expression polite but guarded.**

"Good afternoon," Kaito said, presenting a badge. "We're here for a scheduled meeting with Dr. Haruto Nishida."

The receptionist checked her schedule and then looked up with a hint of uncertainty. "I'm afraid Dr. Nishida isn't available at the moment. His schedule is quite full."

Kaito maintained a calm demeanor. "We're from the Phantom Bureau, investigating a matter of significant importance. It's crucial that we speak with him."

The receptionist hesitated but then picked up the phone to contact Dr. Nishida's office. After a brief conversation, she relayed the message. "Dr. Nishida has agreed to see you, but he's in a meeting right now. If you could wait in the lobby, he'll see you as soon as possible."

The team settled into the lobby, where the modern decor seemed almost out of place given the gravity of their situation. They waited in silence, each lost in their thoughts about the upcoming meeting.

After a short wait, a door slid open, and a man in his late fifties emerged. **Dr. Haruto Nishida** was tall, with graying hair and a sharp, intelligent gaze. He was dressed in a lab coat, which added an air of authority to his already imposing presence.

"Detective Nakamura, Ms. Harada, and Ms. Takeda," Dr. Nishida greeted, his tone formal but curious. "I'm Dr. Nishida. Let's discuss what brings you here."

**Part 3: The Interview**

**Dr. Nishida led them to a private conference room, a space filled with cutting-edge technology and a large glass table. The room was stark and clinical, reflecting the seriousness of the research conducted within.**

Kaito took the lead in the conversation. "Dr. Nishida, we're investigating a series of disappearances that seem to be connected to advanced memory alteration technology. Your recent work has come to our attention."

Dr. Nishida's expression remained neutral. "Memory alteration technology is a sensitive field. What makes you think that my research is connected to these disappearances?"

Rika, carefully choosing her words, spoke up. "We've traced equipment used in these cases back to suppliers linked with your research facility. We believe that the technology used in these disappearances may have originated here."

Dr. Nishida's eyes narrowed slightly. "I see. My research is indeed cutting-edge, but it is conducted under strict ethical guidelines. If there's evidence suggesting misuse, I would like to know about it."

Kaito continued, "We're hoping you can provide insight into the technology and any recent projects or individuals who might have accessed it."

Dr. Nishida leaned back in his chair, contemplating. "Our research is conducted in phases, with strict security measures in place. Access to sensitive equipment is highly controlled. However, I'm aware that unauthorized use is always a possibility."

Miyu, who had been quietly observing, interjected. "Have there been any recent requests for equipment or technology that seemed unusual or out of the ordinary?"

Dr. Nishida thought for a moment. "There have been some requests from external parties, but they were vetted thoroughly. Our security team ensures that any external collaboration adheres to our guidelines."

Rika's eyes narrowed. "Could you provide us with a list of these external parties and the nature of their requests?"

Dr. Nishida nodded. "Certainly. I'll have my assistant compile the information for you. However, I must stress that access to sensitive data requires proper authorization."

Kaito appreciated the cooperation but remained cautious. "We understand. We're looking for any anomalies that could link back to the disappearances. If you have any concerns or additional information, please share it with us."

**Part 4: The Uneasy Alliance**

**After the meeting, the team gathered in the lobby, preparing to leave. Dr. Nishida's assistant, a young woman with a sharp demeanor, provided them with the requested information. The team reviewed the documents as they made their way back to the Bureau.**

Kaito scrutinized the list of external parties. "This list includes several names and organizations. We need to cross-reference these with known associates of Rafael Greaves and any other relevant data we have."

Rika was already working on the cross-referencing. "I'll handle this. We need to identify any patterns or connections that could indicate a link to the memory alteration cases."

Miyu looked thoughtful. "Dr. Nishida seems genuine in his concern, but it's hard to tell if he's entirely truthful. We need to be thorough in our investigation."

As the team made their way back to the Bureau, the rain continued to fall, drumming softly on the city's streets. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation and uncertainty. The investigation had taken a new turn, and the team was now deeper into a web of connections and deceit.
