VINCENZO'S POV
She had signed the papers easily two days after we had that conversation in my house. It was almost too easy.
However something was bothering me when it shouldn't. She should at least know why I had married her.
I leaned back on the wall in the corner of the registrar building where we had come to sign the marriage papers, my gaze fixed on nothing.
Adriana was inside the registrar office with my men and I was out here for a smoke. Did they say people didn't smoke on their wedding day? Well I never gave a fuck about being nice. I wasn't a nice man and I never tried to change that.
My dad had been informed about this already and I was already waiting for his call. He would call, tell me some shit, say hurtful stuff and hang up. Fairly normal routine.
My phone rang in my pockets. The awaited phone call.
Sighing, I fished out my phone and put it to my ear just as I placed the cigarette between my lips and took a drag
The line was silent for a while and I patiently waited for him to talk.
"Hello?" His rough voice sounded.
"Yes"
"Henry let me know that you got her and she signed the papers…" He waited to confirmation and the silence on my line was enough confirmation.
"Good. Now that fool Rossi will watch from the grave how we treat her. I'm proud of you, Vincenzo" My father said with a slightly bearable tone.
I froze at that. This was the first time that he had uttered those words to me and for what? Because I married her? Because he would have his revenge?
He waited for me to say something, anything but it never came so he continued. "You know how we work, Vin. Make her life hell"
I sighed and removed the cigarette from my lips, the nicotine making my body tingle. "I'll do what I want. You made a deal…not me. You should be glad I'm helping you get your share of the deal. I will do what I want." I shot back calmly.
The line was silent. Almost frozen. I rarely talked back to him. I usually just ignored him since my mother died.
Putting the cigarette back between my lips, I took a drag again. "You're right …I do know how we work and you remember the biggest rule? The Capo can do whatever they want without anyone's opinion. I let you butt in with any matter regarding her but I'm taking it up from here. Final" with that I hung up and tucked my phone back.
Felt good. I took another long drag and let the smoke flutter softly around my face.
My phone started ringing again and I groaned annoyed ready to ignore it when I saw the caller ID. Shit.
"Yes Val?" My tone had quietened down In time to hear her voice
"You went ahead?! I thought you said you'd ignore your father!" The lady yelled over the phone.
I sighed deeply. "Look, val… as much as I would tolerate to listen to your tantrums, I don't have time for this. You might as well just wish me a happy married life and just live with it" I snapped back before hanging up again.
I threw the half used cigarette to the ground, crushing the butt with the sole of my black well polished shoes.
Fuck this was the first day but I was already uncertain on how long I could keep this up.
The sound of approaching footsteps made my ears perk up and I looked at the corner on time to see my right hand man Henry walking towards me, his hand raised in silent surrender as he noticed me reaching for my gun.
"Whoa. Easy there, Don Enzo" He said, his voice filled with surprise.
I tucked my gun back in the inner pocket of my suit and leaned back on the wall.
"What is it, Henry? Where is she?" I asked him.
"She's still sitting with the registrar. They're discussing apparently since you won't come back there" he informed me.
I raised a brow immediately.
"You mean Roberto is speaking to her?" I asked in disbelief. The 65 year old man barely spoke to me and mostly ignored everyone that came with me but he was having a conversation with her? Fucking bastard.
"Yes…" Henry confirmed, scratching his neck. "I guess we couldn't charm him as she did" He joked but I didn't even crack a smile at him.
"Did Fenrir say that he would forfeit the girl?", I suddenly asked him
He shook his head slowly. "No" His voice had gone down to a whisper and I sighed.
Fuck.
"Then we'll take the other option since he doesn't want to play nice" I said to henry who immediately straightened up and nodded.
Pushing myself off the wall, I stuck my hands in my pockets and nodded to him. "I'll be coming now." I informed him.
This building was literally mine. Roberto worked for me too.
"Tell my Tesoro to go up to my office. Show her there" I ordered him.
He hesitated. "Your office?" He asked to be sure.
It was a private place and I had once broken a rib of a guard who dared to go against my rule and enter my office. I had a small office in almost every building and they were all sacred.
"You heard what I said, Henry. Don't piss me off and get her to go now, will you?" I said pissed.
He nodded and bowed slightly before leaving me silently.
I sighed and a twisted sense of fear rose up into me. This was a change in my life and I wasn't backing out from it.
I knew why I was asking her to visit my office. There were some things best left unsaid. My father was right. There was no room for sympathy in the business. We were ruthless murderers and nothing more.
Like I said, I never claimed to be a good man because I wasn't. I was the devil and I would bring her down to my hell.
