Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - Homecoming and Engagement?

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the Kingdom of Eldoria, Kai Varenthis stood at the edge of the winding road that led home. After three long years filled with rigorous training, endless exercises, and rock-dodging lessons from Master Senju, he felt a mix of nerves and excitement returning to the place he once called home.

Approaching the grand castle gates, a guard spotted him and exclaimed in surprise, "Prince Kai?! Is that you?"

Kai smirked and waved. "The one and only. Try not to faint from excitement."

The guard hurried to alert the household, and before Kai knew it, he was being ushered through the familiar castle halls, nostalgia flooding his senses. When he entered the great hall, he was met with the familiar faces he had longed to see.

Queen Elara rushed forward, tears glistening in her eyes. "Oh, my son, you're home!"

Kai hugged her back, feeling a warmth that melted his earlier anxiety. "Yeah, Mom. I'm home… and, uh, a bit taller too," he added playfully.

Elara chuckled, brushing a stray lock of hair from his face. "Look at you, all grown up! And that hair! Still as unruly as ever."

Before Kai could respond, Sara, his cousin and childhood friend, bounded forward and tackled him in an enthusiastic hug. "Kai! You're back! And you didn't turn into a complete hermit after all!"

Kai laughed as he staggered back slightly. "I missed you too, Sara! And I'll have you know I had plenty of thrilling adventures. You should've seen me—dodging rocks, crawling through mud! I'm practically a hero now!"

"Oh, I bet," Sara teased, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Let me guess, you also fought invisible monsters?"

"Of course! Fierce, invisible monsters. Terrifying stuff."

The family shared a laugh, and for a moment, Kai felt at peace, surrounded by loved ones. However, an unspoken tension lingered in the air.

After their joyful reunion, they gathered in the grand dining hall, where Kai's favorite dishes awaited him. He animatedly recounted his training adventures, describing Master Senju's "rock-tossing methods" and "silent glares of doom." His stories drew laughter from his mother, teasing from Sara, and even a few rare chuckles from King Alaric, who usually maintained a serious demeanor.

As dinner came to a close, King Alaric stood, his expression turning serious. He exchanged a look with Sara's father, who also stood beside him, and together, they shared a nod before addressing the gathering.

"Kai," King Alaric began, his voice resonating through the hall. "I have something for you."

Kai tilted his head, curious. "Something for me?"

The King nodded and motioned for a servant, who approached carrying a long, carefully wrapped bundle. Placing it on the table in front of Kai, the servant stepped back, and Kai's heart raced with anticipation. Slowly, he unwrapped it, revealing a beautifully crafted sword. Its hilt was engraved with intricate designs, and the blade shimmered with an almost otherworldly glow.

"This sword," King Alaric said, pride evident in his voice, "has been passed down through our family for generations. It is a symbol of our heritage, a bond that ties us to our ancestors. And now, I pass it down to you, my son."

Kai's eyes widened as he held the sword, feeling its weight. A faint inscription along the blade caught his attention, written in ancient runes he couldn't decipher, but he felt an inexplicable connection to the weapon.

"Father…" Kai stammered, a mix of pride and disbelief flooding his heart. "I… I don't know what to say."

"There is nothing to say, my son," King Alaric replied, his gaze steady. "This sword is yours now. May it guide you in times of darkness and remind you of your purpose."

As the family shared in Kai's pride, a new wave of anticipation washed over him. But before he could bask in the moment any longer, King Alaric cleared his throat, shifting the atmosphere again.

"Kai, Sara," he began, his expression serious. "We have an announcement to make—one that has been decided since the two of you were young."

A sense of foreboding filled the room as Kai and Sara exchanged confused glances. "Uh… what kind of announcement, Father?" Kai asked, raising an eyebrow.

King Alaric placed a hand on Kai's shoulder. "The time has come for you and Sara to fulfill a promise made years ago between our families. We are officially announcing your engagement."

For a moment, silence reigned, the words hanging in the air. Both Kai and Sara stared at their fathers in disbelief.

"Engagement?" Kai sputtered, his voice a mix of laughter and shock. "You mean… to Sara? My cousin?"

Sara's face turned an impressive shade of red as she exclaimed, "Hold on a minute! You're telling me I'm supposed to marry him?" She pointed at Kai, who feigned a look of mock offense.

"Excuse me, I am right here, you know," Kai shot back, crossing his arms. "I may be your cousin, but I'd say I'm a pretty great catch."

"Oh, sure! A great catch who brags about fighting invisible monsters. Sounds like the man of every girl's dreams!" Sara retorted, rolling her eyes.

The two fathers chuckled at their children's flustered reactions. King Alaric raised a hand, motioning for them to settle down. "I know this may come as a surprise, but this is a tradition to strengthen the bond between our families. You'll have time to come to terms with it."

Turning to the audience (you), Kai exclaimed, "So, my love life just went from zero to awkward in two seconds flat! Great job, Dad! This is what I get for taking too long at training camp—my father just decided I'm getting married!"

With a grin, he added, "I mean, who doesn't want to marry their cousin? This is how royal families keep it classy, right?"

Amidst the laughter and playful banter, Kai and Sara exchanged more jabs, each trying to outwit the other. "You know, maybe if we just pretend to be miserable about this, they'll change their minds," Kai whispered.

"Oh, I'm way ahead of you," Sara smirked, sharing in his mischief.

As the evening continued with laughter and stories, Kai couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and anxiety about what lay ahead. He had just returned home with a powerful sword and the news of an unexpected engagement, but he knew one thing: this was only the beginning of many awkward adventures.

As he settled into bed that night, he couldn't shake the feeling that his journey was just getting started.

But something felt off. There was an unusual tension in the air, as if something unexpected was about to unfold...
