Chapter 18 - -The Voracious Shadows-

A Peaceful Evening

The forest settled into a tranquil evening. Elios and Merlione sat by a campfire, its flickering glow casting dancing shadows on their faces. Merlione lay on the ground as Elios gently massaged her sore shoulders after a long day of hunting.

"Mmh... Mmh... What a relief," Merlione sighed, savoring the relaxation brought by his skilled hands.

Elios, focused on his task, murmured, "Stop whining, you're distracting me."

Merlione chuckled softly. "It's not my fault you're so good at this."

A comfortable silence enveloped them, broken only by the crackling of the fire and the ambient sounds of the forest.

After a while, Merlione sat up, facing Elios. "You know," she began, her gaze lost in the flames, "despite all the hardships in this world, there's so much beauty too."

Elios, still massaging, smiled. "One day, we'll travel together," he suggested.

Merlione nodded. "Yes. We'll discover these wonders, meet different people, and learn their stories."

She looked at him, her eyes shimmering with gratitude and hope. "I'd love that," she said softly. "But for now, let's enjoy this evening."

Elios agreed, and they spent the rest of the night sharing tales of their past lives and dreams for the future, gazing at the starry sky above.

The Next Night

As darkness fell over the heart of the forest, Elios and Merlione moved with remarkable stealth. The now 13-year-old Elios, more experienced, followed his mentor closely.

"Where are we going tonight?" Elios asked, curiosity lighting his voice.

"You'll find out in time," Merlione replied with a mysterious smile.

"This evening promises to be intriguing," Elios murmured.

"The night reveals many secrets," Merlione agreed.

Suddenly, a faint rustling broke the silence.

Elios instinctively reached for his dagger. Merlione, her senses sharp, scanned their surroundings.

"Stay alert, Elios," she whispered, her feline ears twitching. "I see them."

"Who?" Elios asked.

"The Voracious Shadows," Merlione replied. "They're lurking."

"The Voracious Shadows?" Elios echoed in a whisper.

"Yes," Merlione confirmed. "I've told you about them before."

Elios nodded, remembering. His fingers brushed against the daggers at his belt, ready to draw them at the first sign of danger.

The Voracious Shadows were fearsome creatures, manifestations of corrupted magic. Their presence was becoming increasingly common, devouring everything in their path and leaving behind barren wastelands where no life could thrive.

Merlione suddenly froze. Her keen eyes pierced the darkness between the trees. "There," she whispered.

Elios followed her gaze. At first, he saw nothing. Then, they emerged. Dark, shifting shapes, like fragments of night moving against the flow of reality. The Voracious Shadows.

"Remember your training," Merlione instructed, moving into a battle stance. "Don't let them touch you, not even for a second."

"These creatures are remnants of dark magic," Elios said, his voice steady despite the tension.

As if provoked by his words, the Shadows attacked. They darted between the trees with terrifying speed, their spectral forms making their movements unpredictable.

Elios conjured flames from his hands, creating a blazing barrier around them. The Shadows recoiled, hissing in pain as they neared the fire. But they were many, and soon, the circle of flames began to weaken.

Merlione sprang into action. With feline grace, she leapt through the flames, targeting a cluster of Shadows. Her claws, imbued with barrier magic, tore through the air, scattering the dark creatures like smoke.

Elios saw an opening and instinctively infused his daggers with magic. The blades ignited with a near-white fire. He threw them with precision, striking two Shadows that dissolved in a shrill scream.

Back-to-back, Merlione and Elios fought off wave after wave of Voracious Shadows. The forest echoed with the crackle of flames and the spectral shrieks of the creatures.

Suddenly, Elios noticed a larger, more distinct Shadow. Unlike the others, it seemed to be orchestrating the attack from a distance.

"Merlione!" he called out, pointing. "Over there, their leader!"

Understanding immediately, Merlione nodded.

She charged through a group of Shadows, her movements fluid as the wind. She spun, her magic-enhanced claws carving luminous arcs that obliterated the dark creatures.

"Elios, to your right!" she shouted.

Elios reacted instantly. A Shadow tried to ensnare him, its spectral tendrils reaching for his body. Elios unleashed a burst of flames from his hand, forming a spinning shield of fire. The creature retreated, hissing in frustration.

The Shadows adapted their strategy. Some attacked head-on while others flanked them, probing for weaknesses. A nimble Shadow slipped past Elios's flames, darting toward Merlione like a black arrow.

With a move Elios hadn't thought possible, Merlione arched backward, letting the Shadow fly over her. In the same motion, she counterattacked, her claws ripping through the creature, which dissolved into a cloud of smoke.

"They're getting smarter," Merlione panted.

Elios focused his magic, his daggers blazing with an intense, almost white flame. He launched them in a spinning arc, cutting through multiple Shadows at once.

But the leader remained, observing, directing.

Merlione knew they needed a decisive move. Gathering her strength, she conjured a shield of pure light, brighter than anything Elios had ever seen. The dome of light pushed back the Shadows, who howled in agony.

Seizing the moment, Elios concentrated all his magic into a single spear of fire. The weapon blazed with overwhelming energy. With a battle cry, he hurled it at the leader.

The spear tore through the air, leaving a fiery trail, and struck the Shadow leader at its core. A deafening scream shattered the night as the creature disintegrated.

The remaining Shadows, leaderless, scattered into the forest's depths, vanishing into the darkness.

After the Battle

Breathing heavily, Elios turned to Merlione, who looked at him with a mix of pride and concern.

"You fought brilliantly," she said softly, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"These Voracious Shadows are becoming more frequent," Merlione observed, worry evident in her tone.

A dark glimmer caught their attention. Where the Shadow leader had fallen, a pulsating, ominous crystal lay.

"What is this?" Elios asked, picking it up cautiously.

"The source of the Voracious Shadows," Merlione explained. "A fragment of corrupted magic."

Without hesitation, she crushed the crystal in her hand.

"Let's move on," she said simply.

They emerged into a moonlit clearing moments later. A crystalline waterfall reflected the silver rays, and the tranquil sounds of the night seemed to cleanse the air.

"This is one of the beauties our world offers," Merlione murmured.

Elios lay on the cool grass, letting the serenity ease his aching muscles.

Merlione closed her eyes, listening to the whispers of the night and the soothing cascade of water.
