Chapter 7 - chapter 7: A disturbance

A dense fog hung over the darkened chamber where Daigo stood, his figure barely visible as he inspected the strange, ancient ritual circle drawn across the stone floor. Flickers of dark energy pulsed around him, casting an eerie light on his expression—satisfied, yet restless.

Daigo (muttering): "The soul transfer... It worked."

Behind him, Rei and the other members of his team watched in silence, their eyes reflecting the same faint, hungry anticipation.

Rei: "Then it's only a matter of time now. Soon, we'll retrieve the body."

Daigo nodded, glancing back at his team with a cold gleam in his eye.

Daigo: "The vessel we need... it has to be one of strength and loyalty. Only then will the rebirth be complete."

He turned away, his mind fixed on the figure he remembered—the one who had fought with such tenacity in their last battle. There was a twisted sense of destiny about it, as if all their paths were converging toward a single moment.

Daigo (quietly, to himself): "This world will soon understand true power."

Two months had passed since the last battle, and life in Kagehana had regained a sense of peace. The village had resumed its routines, and the Kage Tai had trained relentlessly in preparation for any future threats. Each member of the team had grown in skill and strength, their energy refined and honed through countless hours of practice. But Kanzaki's absence was felt, a lingering void that stayed with them, especially for Haru.

Today, Haru and his team were sparring in the courtyard. The training was intense, their movements sharper and faster than before. Haru's red and black energy flickered like flames around him as he moved, his Shinkai now a seamless extension of his body.

Kenji parried a blow from Aiko, breathing heavily as he laughed.

Kenji: "Two months, and I'm still not used to seeing you move like that, Haru. You're a different person."

Haru paused, letting his energy dissipate as he gave a small, thoughtful smile.

Haru: "Kanzaki's strength... I feel it. Every time I train, it's like he's still here, pushing me."

Riku leaned on his sword, glancing up at the clear sky with a faint smile.

Riku: "We should visit him today. It's been a while since we've all been there together."

Aiko nodded, a soft look crossing her face.

Aiko: "Yeah... let's go. It's the least we can do."

With a silent agreement, they sheathed their weapons and made their way to the outskirts of the village, to the quiet spot where Kanzaki had been laid to rest.

When they arrived at Kanzaki's grave, something immediately felt... wrong.

The earth around the site seemed disturbed, the edges of the grave uneven, as if someone had been digging. Haru's heart pounded as he noticed a shovel lying nearby, half-buried in the dirt. A sinking feeling crept over him, dread tightening in his chest.

Kenji (whispering): "No... No way."

Haru took a step closer, his breath catching as he looked down into the grave. It was empty. Kanzaki's body was gone.

For a moment, none of them spoke, the weight of the realization settling over them like a heavy, cold fog. Haru's mind raced, unable to comprehend the sight in front of him.

Aiko (voice trembling): "Who... who would do this?"

Riku clenched his fists, his voice tight with rage.

Riku: "This wasn't random. Someone took him. This was planned."

Haru felt his hands shaking, his Shinkai crackling faintly around him in reaction to his emotions. He looked around, searching for any sign, any clue as to who could have done this. But the air was still, the silence oppressive.

Haru (muttering to himself): "Why...? Why would they take Kanzaki?"

Kenji placed a hand on Haru's shoulder, his expression grim.

Kenji: "This can't be a coincidence, Haru. Someone must have known about him... about his strength."

Haru nodded, his gaze fixed on the disturbed earth, the gears turning in his mind. Kanzaki had always been a fierce fighter, a loyal friend, and a protector of their village. But he had also died with a deep strength still within him—a strength that might be valuable to the wrong people.

A memory surfaced in Haru's mind, the strange, cryptic passage he'd found in the old book about Shinkai energy: "Only those bound by unbroken loyalty may transcend the realm of life and death, their strength reborn within the void."

Haru (thinking): "Could they... could they be trying to bring him back somehow?"

The thought chilled him, but a grim determination settled over him as he looked at his team.

Haru: "We need to find out who did this. Kanzaki deserves to rest in peace... and we owe it to him to make sure of that."

The team nodded, their faces set with a fierce resolve. Whoever had taken Kanzaki's body, they would find them—and they would stop whatever twisted plan was in motion.

As they walked back to the village, Kenji voiced the question on all their minds.

Kenji: "If someone's using Kanzaki, do you think... he'll remember us?"

Haru's jaw tightened, his voice low.

Haru: "I don't know. But if they're trying to control him, we'll find a way to bring him back."

The team fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts as they considered the days ahead. The peace they had fought so hard to preserve felt fragile, like it could shatter at any moment.

And somewhere, Daigo's words echoed, carried on the wind as he awaited the vessel for his twisted plan. The Kage Tai didn't know it yet, but their battle had only just begun—and Kanzaki's soul might be the price of victory or defeat.

Daigo (in the distance, unseen): "The power of loyalty... the strength of the departed. Soon, Kagehana will see what true power means."

Meanwhile, Haru stormed through the training grounds, his mind racing as he headed to find Captain Raizo, the new leader of the Kage Tai. Ever since Kanzaki's grave had been found disturbed, Haru felt a sinking feeling he couldn't shake. Finally, he reached Raizo's quarters, where the captain was seated, as calm and centered as ever.

Raizo was a formidable presence. He was tall and solidly built, with deep scars across his hands that told stories of old battles. His Shinkai flowed around him like a contained storm, flickering with intensity just beneath the surface.

Haru: "Captain Raizo... we have a problem. Kanzaki's grave... someone's disturbed it."

Raizo's eyes narrowed, his face remaining composed as he considered Haru's words.

Captain Raizo: "So it's begun. I had my suspicions that something was lurking beneath all this quiet."

Raizo stood up, his gaze hardening.

Captain Raizo: "We have no trail, no direction, and no idea who might be responsible. We'll wait for now. Prepare ourselves, train. Something will come to us—we won't go chasing ghosts."

Haru's fists clenched at Raizo's calm decision. He wanted answers, not patience. Without another word, he turned and walked out, frustration building as he strode back to the training grounds.

Over the next days, Haru led his team through rigorous training, knowing they needed to be stronger if they wanted to face whatever lay ahead. He focused on a new technique he had developed to communicate through their Shinkai energy—a way to strengthen their bonds and sharpen their senses.

Haru: "Alright, everyone. We'll start with meditation. Reach deep, feel the pulse of your Shinkai within. Think of it like connecting your energy with each other's. The more you strengthen that bond, the faster and clearer we'll be able to understand each other in battle."

They sat in a circle, closing their eyes, each one diving into the depths of their own Shinkai. Haru felt his own energy hum, an intense red and black mix, like flames licking in a dark night. He could sense Kenji's energy flicker beside him, and Aiko's calming presence, her Shinkai flowing like water.

As the days passed, they each discovered new strengths within their Shinkai. Kenji unlocked the ability to camouflage himself briefly, blending into his surroundings. Aiko learned to create a protective barrier that extended to those nearby, shielding them from enemy attacks. Riku's Shinkai gave him incredible speed, allowing him to move like a shadow, his strikes growing faster and deadlier.

And Haru, too, felt his Shinkai evolving. He could sense emotions and intentions through his energy, a powerful new tool for reading his enemies in battle.

One afternoon, as they rested from training, a young boy appeared by the outskirts of the village. He wandered aimlessly, looking lost, as villagers cautiously approached him.

Boy: "Please... I'm lost. I don't know where I am."

The villagers gathered around, offering him food and water, their guard lowering as he continued to act the part of a scared, weary traveler. But hidden beneath his innocent facade, the boy was releasing tiny, dark insects, each one a manifestation of Shinkai energy. The insects crawled silently through the village, unnoticed as they spread in all directions, gathering information, mapping out every detail of Kagehana.

When the boy finally slipped away, Haru noticed a strange sensation—a faint, lingering trace of Shinkai energy that felt unfamiliar.

Haru (to himself): "Something's not right."

But before he could investigate further, a low rumble filled the air, and everyone turned toward the horizon. Hovering in the sky, surrounded by a dark, twisted Shinkai energy, was Kanzaki. His presence was unmistakable, though his face was hollow, void of the warmth Haru remembered.

Kenji: "No... that can't be Kanzaki... He's—he was..."

Aiko's eyes widened, her voice barely a whisper.

Aiko: "How... How is this possible?"

Haru's heart raced as he stepped forward, his Shinkai blazing with a mix of fear and anger.

Haru: "Kanzaki! If there's any part of you that remembers us... come down. Talk to us."

Kanzaki looked down, his gaze cold and unrecognizing.

Kanzaki: "Haru... I remember you, and yet, I don't. The person you knew no longer exists."

As he spoke, two massive missile-like constructs appeared in the sky beside him, each one glowing with dark Shinkai energy. They crackled ominously, a threat hanging over the village below.

Kanzaki: "These creations will rain down on your precious Kagehana. They regenerate endlessly, as long as my will sustains them."

Haru's fists clenched, his eyes blazing.

Haru: "Kanzaki, if there's any part of you left in there, fight this. We're your friends. We haven't given up on you."

Kanzaki's lips curled into a twisted smile, a mockery of the man they once knew.

Kanzaki: "Friends... that word holds no meaning now. I am a weapon. Nothing more. But I do remember you, Haru... just enough to know you won't survive what's coming."

The missile-like constructs began descending toward the village, leaving trails of dark energy in their wake. They roared through the sky, filling the air with a deafening hum.

Kenji (yelling): "We have to stop those things, now!"

Haru: "Everyone, get ready! We can't let them hit the village!"

The team sprang into action, their Shinkai energies flaring as they launched themselves toward the dark missiles. Haru felt his heart pounding, his Shinkai burning hotter than ever as he threw himself into the fray, his mind sharp and focused.

He met one of the dark constructs with a slash of his energy-imbued blade, but the force was overwhelming. His sword vibrated under the impact, nearly knocked from his hands. Beside him, Aiko raised her barrier, blocking the energy pulse from the second missile as it struck her shield.

But as fast as they fought, the missiles regenerated, their dark Shinkai reconstructing instantly after each attack.

Kenji: "It's no use! They're rebuilding too fast!"

Haru gritted his teeth, determination surging through him.

Haru: "Then we'll keep hitting them, as long as it takes."

He raised his blade, his Shinkai swirling around him, red and black like a raging storm. But above him, Kanzaki watched, detached and unmoved.

Kanzaki: "No matter how hard you fight, it's futile, Haru. I am not the Kanzaki you once knew. This form... this power... It is a reflection of your failure to protect what you loved."

Haru's heart clenched at Kanzaki's words, but he steadied himself, refusing to falter.

Haru: "Then I'll keep fighting, Kanzaki. Because somewhere in there... I know you remember who you are."

Kanzaki's eyes flickered, but only for a brief moment. Then, with a cold smile, he unleashed a surge of dark Shinkai energy, forcing Haru and his team back.

Kanzaki: "You can try, Haru. But remember—each attempt only brings you closer to your end."

As Haru steadied himself, breathing heavily, he looked up at his former friend with a burning determination. The fight wasn't over yet.
