Chapter 1 - The encounter

A fine mist blanketed the cobblestone streets, veiling the city of Eldergrove in a ghostly quiet. Street lamps flickered in dim halos, struggling to cut through the darkness as if they, too, feared what lay hidden within it. Kara had always loved the city's haunting beauty at night, even if it brought with it a sharp loneliness. Yet, tonight was different—there was a heaviness in the air, something almost suffocating.

She glanced at the window of her small clinic, the last candle burning low as she finished tidying up. As a healer, her day had been full, tending to cuts, fevers, and the occasional broken bone. But it was the work no one saw, the magic she carefully concealed, that kept her weary heart beating. Only her shadows knew what she was truly capable of, and she liked it that way. Her abilities were her burden to bear, a secret she had kept close since she was a child.

Outside, a sudden clamor echoed through the alley. Kara froze, her hand hovering over the flame. She peered through the cracked window, straining to see what lurked beyond the glow of the lamps.

A figure emerged from the shadows, tall and shrouded in a cloak that absorbed the light. He moved with an uncanny grace, as if he were floating through the mist. But as he neared, Kara could see he was limping, his steps uneven.

Curiosity and concern wrestled within her. She had treated countless strangers, but something about this man—the heaviness of his presence, the way he seemed both powerful and fragile—gave her pause.

Before she could decide, the man stumbled and collapsed just outside her door.

Kara rushed out, her heart pounding, and crouched beside him. He was handsome, though his features were marred by fatigue and pain. Dark hair fell in disarray across his brow, and his skin was ashen, damp with sweat. She hesitated, then placed her hand on his shoulder, feeling the tension in his muscles.

"Are you hurt?" she asked, her voice soft but steady.

He looked up, his eyes piercing even in the dim light. They were an impossible shade of silver, glinting like moonlight. For a heartbeat, he seemed to study her, a mix of suspicion and…something else, something she couldn't quite place.

"I don't need your help," he managed, his voice rough, laced with defiance.

Kara raised an eyebrow, refusing to be intimidated. "You're bleeding."

"Nothing you can fix." He tried to pull away, but winced, clutching his side.

Without waiting for his permission, she placed her hand over his wound. Through the fabric of his cloak, she could feel the wet warmth of blood. Her fingers tingled as she summoned her magic, sending a pulse of healing energy into his body. It was a simple spell, one she'd perfected over the years, but the effect was immediate. She felt his heartbeat steady, his breathing ease.

The man's gaze snapped back to her, his eyes wide with shock. "What…what did you do?"

Kara quickly pulled her hand away, heat rising to her cheeks. She hadn't meant to reveal her abilities, especially not to a stranger. "Just basic healing. Nothing special."

He sat up, scrutinizing her, a faint trace of suspicion shadowing his face. "You're not like the others."

"Neither are you," she shot back, her voice barely above a whisper. She didn't know what compelled her to say it, but something about him felt…different. Dangerous.

Before she could ask more, a low, guttural sound echoed through the alley. Kara's blood ran cold as she recognized the sound—a shadow creature. She'd only heard stories, whispers of dark entities that hunted the city's streets at night. But now, standing in the fog, she could see its form, a beast of darkness with red, gleaming eyes.

The man beside her swore under his breath, his hand instinctively reaching for a dagger hidden beneath his cloak. "Get inside," he ordered, his tone sharp, leaving no room for argument.

Kara hesitated, torn between fear and the strange pull she felt toward him. But before she could decide, the creature lunged, claws extended, aiming straight for them.

She barely had time to react as the man pushed her back, stepping in front of her with his dagger raised. The blade gleamed, catching the faintest sliver of light as he struck, his movements swift and precise. The creature recoiled, hissing, but didn't retreat.

Kara's mind raced. She'd always stayed hidden, kept her magic secret, but watching this man—this stranger—fight to protect her, something within her shifted.

Instinctively, she reached out, her hand trembling, and murmured a spell under her breath. Shadows coiled around her fingers, swirling with a life of their own, then shot toward the creature, striking it with a force that made it stagger.

The man turned to her, his expression unreadable, but there was a flicker of something—surprise, perhaps, or admiration.

"What are you?" he breathed, his voice barely audible.

Kara didn't answer. She wasn't sure herself.

In that moment, the creature let out a final, tortured screech before disintegrating into the mist, leaving only silence in its wake.

The man lowered his dagger, his breathing heavy. "You shouldn't have done that," he said, though his voice held no anger. Only…fear?

Kara crossed her arms, trying to mask her own trembling. "You're welcome."

He looked away, almost as if ashamed. "You've exposed yourself. They'll know what you are now. They'll come for you."

A chill ran down her spine. "Who will?"

He hesitated, as if choosing his words carefully. "The shadows. They're drawn to power. And tonight…you've awakened something in them."

Kara's heart pounded, her mind racing with questions. But before she could ask, he took a step back, his silver eyes locking onto hers one last time. "I shouldn't stay."

"Wait," she blurted, reaching out. "At least tell me your name."

For a moment, he seemed to waver, a shadow of a smile ghosting over his lips. "Damon."

With that, he turned, disappearing into the mist as quickly as he had appeared, leaving Kara alone in the empty street, her mind reeling.

Back in her clinic, Kara paced, her thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and unease. Who was Damon? And why had her magic reacted so strongly in his presence? She felt an inexplicable pull toward him, a strange connection she couldn't explain.

But as the night wore on, a single, haunting thought settled in her mind: she had broken her one rule. She had exposed her magic to a stranger—a stranger with secrets of his own.
