Chapter 18 - The Proposal

Elara stood outside Duke Aric's estate, her heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. The grand manor loomed before her, its imposing structure a reminder of the power and influence held within. Today was the day she would propose a contract marriage, a bold move that could alter the course of her life. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the conversation ahead.

As she entered the estate, the atmosphere shifted. The air was thick with the scent of polished wood and fresh flowers, but the warmth of the day felt distant. Elara was led through the opulent halls by a servant, her mind racing with thoughts of what she would say. She had chosen Duke Aric for this proposal because she believed he would never take it seriously, and she trusted him to keep things uncomplicated.

When she reached the private sitting room, she found Duke Aric already there, leaning against a dark wooden table, his expression unreadable. He was dressed in a tailored outfit that accentuated his stature, but there was an air of impatience about him. He glanced up as she entered, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"Lady Elara," he said, his tone cool and formal. "I assume you're here to discuss the matter we spoke of?"

"Yes, Duke Aric," she replied, trying to match his seriousness. "I want to propose a contract marriage."

He raised an eyebrow, skepticism etched on his face. "A contract marriage? You must be joking. Surely you don't mean to tie yourself to me, even in a temporary arrangement."

"It's not as absurd as it sounds," Elara countered, her voice steady. "I need a way to avoid marrying the son of a Viscount. A contract marriage with you would allow me to maintain my independence while providing you with the social standing that comes with such an arrangement."

Duke Aric crossed his arms, his expression hardening. "And why would I want to be tied to you, even for a short time? I have no interest in mingling with the court or playing the role of a husband."

"Because I can offer you something in return," Elara said, her heart pounding. "I've become a skilled mage, and I'm also proficient in swordplay. I can assist you in your efforts to protect the North, using my magic to aid you in battle and my sword skills to defend you in close combat."

He scoffed, shaking his head. "You think your magic and swordplay are enough to make up for the inconvenience of a contract marriage?"

"I do," Elara replied, her determination growing. "I've worked hard to develop my skills, and I'm confident that I can make a difference. And in return, you would provide me with the freedom to pursue my own ambitions without the constraints of a traditional marriage."

Duke Aric's expression softened slightly, but he remained guarded. "And what's in it for you? Why would you want to take on the reputation of being my wife, even if it's just on paper?"

"Because I refuse to be a pawn in someone else's game," she said firmly. "I want to carve my own path, and this is my opportunity to do so. I can help you, and in return, I gain the freedom I seek."

He regarded her for a long moment, his eyes searching hers for any sign of insincerity. "I'll consider your proposal," he said finally. "But don't expect me to jump at the chance. I have my own plans, after all."

Elara felt a surge of hope. "That's all I ask. Just consider it."

As they continued to discuss the terms of the contract, Elara felt a sense of empowerment wash over her. She had taken control of her destiny, and with Duke Aric by her side, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

The atmosphere in the room shifted as Duke Aric leaned back, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "Let's say I entertain this notion of a contract marriage. What exactly would it entail?" His tone was still skeptical, but there was a flicker of interest in his eyes.

Elara took a deep breath, ready to outline her vision. "The contract would last for two years. During that time, we would present ourselves as a married couple to the court, but we would maintain our independence. We would not be expected to share a household in the traditional sense, and we would each have the freedom to pursue our own interests."

Duke Aric nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "And what about the expectations of the court? They will want to see us together, attending events, engaging in social activities."

"I understand that," Elara replied. "But I can handle that aspect. I'm no stranger to the court's demands. I can play the part of a dutiful wife when necessary, but I will not be confined to it. My primary focus will be on assisting you in your endeavors in the North."

He raised an eyebrow. "And how exactly do you plan to assist me? You mentioned your magic and swordplay, but what does that look like in practice?"

"I can provide magical support in battles, whether it's enhancing your soldiers' abilities or creating protective wards," she explained, her excitement growing. "In addition, I can train with you and your men, ensuring that we are prepared for any threats that may arise. My skills can be an asset in both strategy and combat."

Duke Aric considered her words, his expression shifting from skepticism to intrigue. "You're quite confident in your abilities, aren't you?"

"I have to be," Elara replied, her voice steady. "I've worked hard to hone my skills, and I believe they can make a difference. The North is vulnerable, and I want to help you protect it."

He leaned back in his chair, a thoughtful frown creasing his brow. "And what happens after the two years? You expect me to simply let you go?"

"Yes," Elara said, her heart racing. "At the end of the contract, we would part ways amicably. No strings attached. It would be a clean break, allowing us both to move on with our lives."

Duke Aric's gaze was piercing as he studied her. "You realize that this will not be an easy path. The court will scrutinize every move we make, and there will be those who will try to undermine us."

"I understand the risks," Elara replied, unwavering. "But I'm willing to face them if it means securing my future and helping you in the process."

He sighed, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "You're asking for a lot, Elara. A contract marriage is not something to be taken lightly, even if it's just for appearances."

"I know," she said, her voice softening. "But I believe it's a mutually beneficial arrangement. You need someone to help you navigate the political landscape, and I need a way to escape the expectations placed upon me. Together, we can achieve our goals."

Duke Aric remained silent for a moment, his expression contemplative. Finally, he spoke. "Very well. If I agree to this, I will draft a formal contract outlining our terms. We will need to be clear about what is expected of each other."

Elara felt a surge of relief. "Thank you, Duke Aric. I appreciate your willingness to consider this."

He waved a hand dismissively. "Don't thank me yet. This is merely the beginning. We will need to establish boundaries and guidelines to ensure that neither of us oversteps our roles."

"Of course," she replied, her heart racing with excitement. "I'm ready to discuss whatever terms you think are necessary."

As they continued to outline the specifics of their arrangement, Elara felt a sense of empowerment wash over her. She had taken control of her destiny, and with Duke Aric by her side, she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
