Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: Luck

Kaito Sakamoto's first thought was:

His luck really was something else!

Three trips out to sea.

The first time, he encountered a massive whirlpool.

The second time, he was snatched away by a giant bird.

And the third time, he was blasted straight into the ocean by a cannonball.

"God damn it!"

Beep beep beep beep!

His luck was so absurd that Kaito couldn't stop himself from venting like an angry telegraph operator.

After taking a deep breath, he lifted his head and scanned his surroundings. All he could see was a vast, endless white expanse—whether it was the sky or the ground, there was no difference, no distractions. The path ahead stretched endlessly as far as the eye could see.

"Is this heaven?"

"Or hell?"

"This can't be, right? I'm not supposed to die so easily."

Kaito muttered to himself, raising his hand, but the little white snake that had been on his wrist was gone.

Just as he was wondering what was happening, a mechanical voice suddenly echoed in the silence.

Kaito instantly recognized the voice—it belonged to the one who had sent him to this pirate world and given him that weak and sickly "god-defying" skill.

"Well, that's clever of you."

"True, although you're a bit useless, you're not dead yet."

"This is your subconscious, you've fallen into a deep sleep."

The system's voice, which hadn't been heard for ten years, explained.

"System?" Kaito's tone was full of disbelief.

"Yes↗"

The system replied, its voice still as proud as ever.

"You've got to be kidding me!"

"Where the hell have you been for the last ten years? You're just now crawling out of the grave!?"

"Tell me already, what the hell is the third power I got?!"

"Is it this damn bracelet on my wrist?"

Kaito's anger, built up from ten years of obsession, exploded. For all these years, he had forced himself to accept that the bracelet was just part of his third power, but his mind would never stop obsessing over it. Without a clear answer from the system, he knew he'd probably never stop wondering.

"It's really… not!"

The system responded with a big sigh.

Kaito's heart jumped to his throat.

"Stop!"

"Fine, if it's not, then tell me right now, what is the third power?"

"I'm worried you're going to 'catch a virus' and disappear again!"

"I'm still young, 10 years, 20 years—who the hell can wait that long!!!"

Kaito directly demanded the system get to the point. If it disappeared again, only to return 10 years later, he'd probably lose his mind.

"You're being rude!"

"What do you mean 'disappear'! 'Catch a virus'? Are you polite?"

"I just had some urgent matters!!"

The system argued back defensively.

"Heh."

"What's that supposed to mean?!"

Kaito chuckled mockingly, and the system's mood instantly soured, but then it calmed itself.

"Forget it."

"Anyway, once I tell you about the third power, I won't have to come back."

"Then tell me quickly!!"

Kaito urged impatiently.

"Alright!"

"The third power is… beep… beep…"

"…"

"…"

"Are you scared? Hahaha."

Kaito: .....

"Are you out of your mind?"

Kaito couldn't help but wonder, was this really the system? If it was, then why was it acting so weird?

"Tch, you're not funny at all."

"Fine, fine, just tell me."

"Ten years ago, the third power you drew was: Luck."

The system finally revealed Kaito's third power.

"Luck…?"

Kaito couldn't quite believe his ears.

"This is considered a power?"

"Of course, it's not pure luck."

"Luck is something you can't see or touch."

"Your third power, to be precise, is: Luck Transformation."

The system gave another explanation, but Kaito was more confused than ever.

"Can you explain it more clearly?"

"Really stupid."

"Luck Transformation, to put it simply, means that your luck changes every day."

"Sometimes you'll be lucky."

"Sometimes you'll be unlucky."

"Isn't that the same for normal people?"

Kaito couldn't help but interrupt with an expletive.

"Shut up and let me finish!!"

Now the system was swearing too.

"Sure, normal people experience that, but you're different. Your luck increases every day."

"Let's say luck is measured in points, and the highest a person can have is 100 points."

"And your luck increases by one point each day. In 100 days, your luck will be maxed out."

"On days when your luck is bad, or even negative, the additional 100 points of luck will offset that misfortune, turning the negative luck into positive."

"If your luck is good that day, your luck will multiply, and it'll explode!"

The system provided a full explanation. This ability was indeed godlike. Once 100 days passed and the 100 points of luck were filled, it would be impossible to experience misfortune—unless you were incredibly unlucky, with negative 100 luck.

But something still didn't add up.

"Wait a minute!!"

"If this ability is so great..."

"Then why the hell have I been so unlucky these days when I've been out at sea?"

Kaito wondered aloud. If his luck worked like the system said, then why had everything gone so wrong? Was he really getting negative 100 luck every day?
