Chapter 36 - Shadows of the past

The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the Kingdom of Eldralore as Zia prepared for her day. The kitchen had become a haven of laughter and warmth, but a sense of unease stirred in the air, a whisper of something darker.

"Zia, have you seen Leon?" Lila asked, her hands busy arranging flowers in a vase on the kitchen table.

"No, but I thought he was in the library," Zia replied, glancing toward the door. "He promised to teach me more about court etiquette today."

"Maybe he got caught up with his royal duties," Lila suggested, her voice laced with concern.

As if summoned by her words, Leon entered the kitchen, his brow furrowed with worry. "Zia, we need to talk."

Zia felt a rush of apprehension. "What's wrong?"

Leon hesitated, glancing at the bustling kitchen staff before leading her away from the noise. "I just received word from the royal guards. There have been sightings of Madame Seraphine and another witch—a powerful one—near the outskirts of the kingdom."

Zia's heart sank. "Another witch? But how can she be more powerful than Seraphine?"

"They say she is a master of dark magic, one who was banished long ago. Her name is Morgana, and her return could mean trouble for us," Leon explained, his voice serious.

"Morgana?" Zia echoed, feeling a chill run down her spine. "I've heard tales of her, but I thought they were just stories. If she's back, we need to prepare."

"I'll gather the council and the guards," Leon said. "But we should keep this between us for now. The last thing we need is panic spreading through the palace."

Zia nodded, her mind racing. Just when she had begun to feel secure in her new role, the shadows of the past threatened to pull her back into chaos. "I'll help however I can."

"Good. We might need your cunning to outsmart them," Leon replied, a hint of a smile breaking through his worry.

---

In the following days, the palace buzzed with an undercurrent of tension. Zia, determined to stay proactive, sought to learn as much as possible about Morgana and Seraphine's intentions. She spent hours in the library with Leon, poring over ancient texts and scrolls, searching for any clues about their enemies.

One afternoon, while flipping through a particularly dusty tome, Zia stumbled upon a hidden page. "Leon, look at this!" she exclaimed, pointing to an illustration of a powerful amulet glowing with dark magic. "It says here that Morgana used a talisman to amplify her powers. If we can find a way to neutralize it, we might stand a chance against her."

Leon leaned closer, his eyes narrowing in concentration. "That could work. If we can disrupt her magic, it might weaken her enough to confront her. But how do we find this talisman?"

Just then, Lila popped her head into the library, her expression one of excitement. "I overheard some of the guards talking! They said Morgana was seen near the Sacred Forest of Elyndra. Maybe she's searching for the amulet herself!"

"The Sacred Forest?" Zia mused, recalling tales of its ancient magic and hidden dangers. "If we go there, we might find answers."

Leon nodded, determination etched on his face. "We need to inform the council and prepare an expedition. But we'll need to be cautious. Morgana won't be easy to face."

As they prepared for their journey, Zia couldn't shake the feeling that they were stepping into a trap. But she also knew they had to act before Morgana's darkness spread further.

---

The next day, armed with their determination and a small band of guards, Zia, Leon, and Lila ventured into the Sacred Forest. The trees loomed tall and ancient, their gnarled roots twisting like serpents on the ground.

"I've always wanted to come here," Lila said, her voice filled with wonder. "It feels so alive."

"Alive, yes. But also dangerous," Zia replied, scanning the surroundings warily. "Stay alert."

As they delved deeper into the forest, they noticed strange markings etched into the trees—dark symbols that seemed to pulse with a sinister energy. Zia shivered, recalling the tales of those who ventured into the forest and never returned.

"I don't like this," Lila whispered, clutching Zia's arm.

"Stay close," Zia reassured her, feeling a sense of protectiveness. "We'll find what we need."

Suddenly, a loud crack echoed through the trees, and a figure emerged from the shadows—a tall woman cloaked in darkness, her eyes glinting with malice. Morgana stood before them, an aura of power radiating from her.

"Welcome to my domain," she sneered, her voice like velvet over steel. "I've been expecting you."

Zia felt a rush of fear and defiance. "You won't get away with this, Morgana. We know about your talisman!"

Morgana laughed, a chilling sound that sent shivers down Zia's spine. "You think you can stop me? I have been preparing for this moment for centuries. With Seraphine at my side, we will plunge this kingdom into eternal darkness!"

"Seraphine?" Leon asked, stepping forward, his voice steady despite the threat. "You're working with her?"

"Of course," Morgana replied, her lips curling into a smile. "She may have been your enemy once, but we have a common goal now. To take back what is ours and crush anyone who stands in our way."

Zia exchanged glances with Leon and Lila, sensing the tension rising. "You're wrong if you think we'll let you succeed," Zia said, steeling her resolve. "This kingdom won't fall to your darkness."

Morgana's expression darkened. "Brave words, little thief. But you'll find that courage alone won't save you." With a flick of her wrist, dark tendrils of magic shot toward them, swirling like a tempest.

"Get back!" Leon shouted, raising his arm defensively. Zia instinctively moved in front of Lila, ready to fight.

But just as the shadows were about to engulf them, a blinding light burst forth, illuminating the forest and pushing back the dark magic. Zia blinked, momentarily blinded, and then saw a figure emerging from the light—an ethereal woman with long, flowing hair and a shimmering gown.

"Enough, Morgana!" the woman commanded, her voice echoing with authority. "You will not harm them."

Zia felt a rush of hope. "Who are you?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I am Aeliana, the Guardian of the Sacred Forest," the woman replied, her gaze fierce. "Morgana's darkness cannot touch this place as long as I stand."

Morgana snarled, her anger palpable. "You have no power here, Aeliana! The forest has always belonged to the dark."

Aeliana stepped forward, her presence radiating strength. "You underestimate the bonds of this land. I will not allow you to turn it into a battleground."

Zia watched in awe as the two powerful beings squared off, the air crackling with tension. "What do we do?" she whispered to Leon and Lila.

"We find a way to help," Leon replied, determination etched on his face. "We can't let Morgana win."

Just as they were about to move, Morgana unleashed another wave of dark magic, but Aeliana countered with a barrier of light, pushing back the darkness. The force of their magic created a shockwave that knocked Zia off her feet.

Lila grabbed Zia's hand, helping her up. "We have to do something!" she urged, her eyes wide with fear.

Zia glanced around, searching for anything that could help. "The amulet! We have to find it and use its power against Morgana."

Leon nodded, his resolve firm. "Let's split up and search. We need to find a way to disrupt their magic."

As they rushed into the trees, Zia felt the weight of the situation pressing down on her. They were up against two powerful witches, and the stakes had never been higher. But she couldn't let fear paralyze her. This was her chance to protect the kingdom and prove that she was more than just a thief.

---

As Zia navigated through the underbrush, she stumbled upon a small clearing, her heart racing. In the center lay an ancient stone altar, and on it glimmered a dark amulet, pulsating with power.

"This must be it!" Zia gasped, reaching out to grab it, but the moment her fingers brushed against the cool surface, a wave of energy surged through her, and she heard Morgana's mocking laughter echo in her mind.

"Foolish girl! You think you can wield that power?" Morgana's voice taunted. "It will consume you!"

But Zia steeled herself, channeling her determination. "I won't let you win!"

Just then, Leon and Lila burst into the clearing, breathless. "Zia! We found—"

Before they could finish, dark tendrils shot toward them, and Zia, heart racing, shouted, "Grab the amulet! We can use it to fight back!"

Leon rushed forward, seizing the amulet. Instantly, a brilliant light erupted, surrounding them, pushing back the darkness. Zia felt the energy surge within her.
