The morning light gently filtered through the window as Lily stretched in her bed, the warmth of the blanket tempting her to stay cozy. But the thought of pancakes for breakfast made her jump up. She threw on her favorite sweater and rushed downstairs, already imagining the sweet syrup drizzling over her pancakes.
David was already in the kitchen, humming a tune while flipping pancakes. "Good morning, sleepyhead," he greeted, flashing her a smile.
"Good morning, Dad!" Lily grinned, her stomach growling. The pancakes on the table were just as fluffy and golden as she hoped.
"Hungry?" David asked, placing a plate in front of her.
"Yes!" Lily eagerly took a fork and drizzled syrup over her pancakes, the sweet smell filling the air. "Yay, pancakes!" she giggled, diving in.
David chuckled. "I thought you'd like that." He sat down with his own plate, watching her eat happily.
Lily looked out the window, where the snow had been falling steadily for the past few days, turning everything outside into a sparkling winter wonderland. She could hear the crunch of snow beneath her boots as she stepped outside, her warm breath clouding in the cold air.
"Ready for daycare, Lily?" David asked, bundling her up in her coat and scarf.
"Ready!" Lily chirped, grabbing his hand as they walked down the path together, the snow crunching beneath their feet.
When they reached daycare, Lily gave her dad a big hug. "Bye, Daddy! See you later!" she called, skipping toward the door.
"Have a good day, Lily," David called after her, smiling as she vanished inside.
Inside, the daycare room was warm and welcoming, and Ms. Choi greeted them with her usual bright smile. "Good morning, everyone! It's time for some winter fun today!"
Lily joined her friends on the soft rug, and soon, Ms. Choi came over with a tray of steaming mugs. "Who wants some hot chocolate?" she asked.
"I do!" Lily said, raising her hand. Ms. Choi handed her a mug filled with rich, creamy hot chocolate and a few marshmallows floating on top. Lily's eyes sparkled.
"This is so yummy!" she said, taking a careful sip. A marshmallow stuck to her lip, and Joon burst out laughing.
"You've got a marshmallow mustache, Lily!" he teased, pointing at her lip.
Lily giggled, wiping her lip. "You have one too!" she retorted, making Joon laugh even harder.
The room was filled with cheerful chatter as everyone enjoyed their hot chocolate. When they were done, Ms. Choi gathered the kids for story time.
"Today's story is about squirrels getting ready for winter," Ms. Choi said, holding up a book. She began reading in a lively voice, and the children listened closely, imagining themselves as the little squirrels gathering acorns.
When the story ended, Ms. Choi asked, "If you were an animal in the story, which one would you be?"
Lily's hand shot up. "I'd be a squirrel! I'd help gather acorns with my friends."
"I'd be a bear!" Joon said proudly. "I'd sleep all winter in my warm cave!"
Everyone laughed, and Ms. Choi smiled. "Those are both great choices. Now, let's make our own animals!"
She handed out paper, crayons, and scissors, and soon the room was buzzing with activity as the children worked on their art. Lily concentrated, folding the paper carefully to create a squirrel with a big bushy tail. She showed it to Ms. Choi when she was done.
"Look, Ms. Choi! It's my squirrel!" Lily said, holding up her creation.
"That's a fantastic squirrel, Lily," Ms. Choi praised. "You've got a real talent for crafting!"
Once the animals were finished, Ms. Choi took the children outside to play in the snow. The playground was a magical place, with everything blanketed in white.
"Let's go find winter treasures!" Ms. Choi called. She handed each child a small basket and told them to gather anything interesting they could find.
Lily's eyes widened as she spotted a tiny pinecone half-buried in the snow. She picked it up carefully and placed it in her basket.
"Look what I found!" she called out, showing Ms. Choi the pinecone.
"That's a great find, Lily! What a special little treasure," Ms. Choi said with a smile.
Nearby, Joon was busy picking up small pebbles and arranging them in a little pattern in the snow. "I'm making a snow fort!" he said proudly.
"That's a good idea," Lily said, watching him work. She turned her attention back to her basket, excited to see what else she could discover in the winter wonderland.
After a while, Ms. Choi called everyone inside, and the children sat down for a snack. The smell of fresh tangerines filled the room as they peeled and shared them with each other. Lily savored each sweet bite, then pulled out her new winter treasure—a little icicle she'd found hanging from a branch. She showed it off to her friends.
"Wow, that's so cool, Lily!" Joon said, his eyes wide. "It's like a little frozen gem!"
"Yeah, it's pretty," Lily agreed, carefully placing it on a napkin to keep safe.
Ms. Choi smiled. "It's time for our winter dance now! Who's ready to be a snowflake?"
The children squealed with excitement as Ms. Choi played an upbeat song. Lily spun in circles, pretending to be a snowflake drifting through the air. She laughed as she twirled, feeling light and carefree.
"I'm a snowflake!" she called out to Joon, spinning faster.
"I'm a tree!" Joon replied, making slow, swaying movements like a tall tree in the winter wind. The children giggled as they danced around, pretending to be all sorts of winter creatures.
As the music ended, Ms. Choi gave everyone a sticker with a snowflake design. Lily was thrilled. "I'm going to put this on my sticker book!" she said, carefully peeling off the backing and placing it on the page.

Going Home and Dinner
When daycare was over, Lily ran up to her dad. "Dad! We did so much fun stuff today. We made winter animals, and I found a pinecone and an icicle!"
"That sounds amazing, Lily!" David said, bending down to give her a hug. "What else did you do?"
Lily eagerly told him all about the hot chocolate, the dance, and how she'd been a squirrel in the story. "It was the best day ever!" she finished.
"Sounds like it. Let's head home, and I'll make us something yummy for dinner."
The walk home was filled with chatter, Lily still buzzing with excitement from her day. When they reached home, David helped her out of her coat, and they set to work in the kitchen.
They made a comforting meal of rice, miso soup, and dumplings. Lily happily stirred the soup while David set the table. "This smells so good, Dad," Lily said, her stomach growling.
David smiled as they sat down to eat. "I'm glad you like it, sweetheart."
After dinner, they shared a bowl of persimmons for dessert. The sweet, smooth fruit was a perfect end to the day. Lily leaned back in her chair, satisfied.
"Winter is the best time for persimmons," Lily said, smiling at her dad.
"I agree," David said. "And it's even better when we get to spend it together."
Later that night, Lily placed her sticker on her bedside table and snuggled into her blanket, already looking forward to more winter fun. As she drifted off to sleep, she smiled, dreaming of snowflakes and winter adventures.
