This is Combusken's first battle since reaching the Professional level. Not only does it need to perform beautifully, but it must also fight with vigor. Combusken is ready for the battle and will unleash the fiercest attack as soon as Bruce gives the order."Double Kick," Bruce commanded first.
"Combusken!"
Combusken was in a great mood, responding enthusiastically as it charged toward Loudred at an astonishing speed, its legs glowing with a bright white light.
"Roar!"
Loudred roared, lifting its arms to summon massive rocks out of thin air, which then plummeted down towards Combusken.
"Smash them," Bruce said calmly.
Combusken's eyes were steady as it faced the incoming giant rocks, showing no fear. With powerful kicks, it shattered the rocks mid-air, breaking them into countless tiny fragments that fell to the ground.
Combusken then landed firmly on the ground, looking directly at Loudred, giving a slight nod.
"Keep going!"
"Yes, the leg strength has improved a lot, and the reaction speed has also increased," Bruce observed Combusken's performance and nodded in satisfaction.
The level of this Loudred isn't particularly high, making it the ideal test opponent for Combusken's newfound strength. It allows Combusken to hone its enhanced combat power—a perfect two-for-one benefit.
"Roar!"
Seeing its rocks shattered with such ease, Loudred felt humiliated and stomped the ground hard in fury.
The deafening noise made Bruce cover his ears again.
"No, next time I have to buy some noise-canceling headphones," Bruce thought.
Meanwhile, in the school team's conference room.
The three watching the screen exchanged glances, each looking at the other in disbelief.
After a pause, Rasmus hesitantly asked, "Captain, am I seeing things? A Professional-level Combusken?"
Liam stared at the battle on screen, his expression serious and voice low. "That's right, it's a Professional-level Combusken."
Rasmus was astonished. Liam stood up and said, "And the strength it's showing is quite high for a Professional."
The image of Combusken kicking the rocks into fragments stayed in his mind.
"This..." Rasmus's expression shifted as he turned to Jessica, equally surprised, and asked loudly, "Jessica, is this really your cousin?"
Jessica withdrew her gaze, shot a hard look at Rasmus, and replied, "You think my cousin is just a freshman?"
Rasmus smiled sheepishly and continued, "Your cousin just unleashed a Professional-level Combusken. This is completely over the top. It totally threw me off."
Then, with darkened eyes, he asked, "Could it be that your cousin isn't in the research department but rather the battle department?"
Jessica rolled her eyes and replied angrily, "He told me himself."
Hearing this, Rasmus held his chin thoughtfully and mumbled, "That's odd. He's not a battle guy, and he's not even a relative... so how does he have a Professional-level Pokémon?"
Liam added, "Right now, even combat department students don't usually have Professional-level Pokémon."
Rasmus was momentarily stunned but nodded. "True, during military field training, one high-level Pokémon was a top talent."
Liam's eyes flashed, and he added, "Among all past field trainings, only Elite Lance ever had a Pokémon that was near-elite during the military training phase."
"And even then, it took another month and a half for his Pokémon to reach Professional level."
At these words, Rasmus swallowed and said in a rough voice, "Captain, are you saying Jessica's cousin has surpassed Elite Lance at this stage?"
Liam pondered a moment before replying, "Not exactly. Lance Dragneel's achievements are unparalleled. This is still an early stage; Combusken might've had some lucky encounters and made quick progress."
"But regardless, this junior definitely has a high talent in Pokémon breeding, and he's already broken the field training record," Liam said, looking directly at Jessica.
Jessica blinked and, after some thought, said, "My cousin wasn't very interested in Pokémon breeding or battles as a kid; he only went through the research department."
Liam smiled slightly and guessed, "Maybe Pokémon changed him."
He looked at Jessica and gently added, "As you said, his personality has changed a lot, and he might have discovered his talent as a trainer because of that."
Pausing a moment, Liam then said firmly, "In short, our school team is going to appoint a junior."
Rasmus, recovering from his earlier shock, smiled and said, "Hey, a Professional-level Pokémon—this freshman exchange competition is going to be worth watching."
…
As they spoke, Combusken and Loudred continued fighting.
"Roar!"
With a furious roar, Loudred stomped the ground, creating deep cracks as the ground shook violently.
Intimidation tactic!
Though [Bulldoze] isn't as powerful as [Earthquake], it's bound to do great damage to Combusken due to its Ground type.
Bruce already knew how to counter this move. His eyes were calm as he instructed, "Bounce."
Simultaneously, Bruce took a few steps back to avoid being accidentally hurt.
"Combusken!"
Combusken responded quietly, leaping over ten meters into the air, dodging [Bulldoze] completely.
Immediately afterward, Combusken dove down, sharp claws first, inflicting considerable damage on Loudred.
"Roar!"
Loudred howled in pain as the shockwaves spread through its body.
Bruce narrowed his eyes and gave the final command, "Brick Break."
"Combusken!"
Combusken's eyes sharpened as its claws gleamed with a bright white light, transforming into blades that struck fiercely!
Loudred couldn't dodge and took the direct hit from Combusken!
"Roar!"
Loudred let out a groan of pain as bright red blood seeped from its body before it staggered and collapsed helplessly to the ground.
"Good job," Bruce praised with a smile.
"Combusken!"
Combusken flexed its sharp claws, its eyes shining.
On the other side,
After watching the entire battle, Liam looked at Jessica and said, "Jessica, you have to help me with this."
Jessica looked at him, already guessing what Liam wanted her to do.
Liam's gentle, refined demeanor suddenly shifted as he slammed his right fist on the table with great ambition:
"If you win the junior championship, you'll also win the freshman exchange competition championship!"
