Chapter 1 - Reptile Lover

"At the top of a towering skyscraper in New York, a mysterious man stood against the backdrop of a vibrant sunset, his silhouette framed by the glowing cityscape below. He peered down into the bustling streets, searching for any signs of trouble, his posture tense with anticipation and purpose."

"Well, well, well! Look who decided to drop in! Didn't see you there—guess my blending skills are still on point. So, you're probably wondering how a simple lizard lover like me ended up in spandex, right?

Let's rewind. I was just Diego Cruz, your typical high school student with a serious passion for reptiles. Seriously, lizards are incredible! Did you know some can regrow their tails? Anyway, during a field trip to this high-tech genetics lab—because what could go wrong, right?—I got blasted with some experimental serum. Boom! Now, I can stick to walls and sneak around like I'm in a ninja movie.

And let's be real: I know this origin story sounds familiar. 'Ordinary guy gets superpowers'—it's practically a cliché! But hey, every hero has their tale, and this is mine! Just pray my writer doesn't accidentally mix me up with someone else or get slapped with a lawsuit. I'd hate to end up in a crossover with a certain web-slinger who also has a knack for the dramatic!

So, hang tight, friends! The adventure is just getting started, and I'm thrilled to have you along for the ride!"

A month ago, a young man found himself in the midst of a hectic morning, racing to gather his belongings and make it out the door as he prepared for another day at school.

Before heading out, he takes a moment to feed his beloved pets.

His room was filled with aquariums housing different kinds of lizards, including geckos, bearded dragons, and axolotls.

"Okay, okay, time to go! Wait… I can't leave you guys hanging! I almost forgot to feed you!"

[He rushes to the nearest aquarium.]

"Alright, little buddies, breakfast time! You don't want to be grumpy when I get back, do you? Gecko, get in there!"

[He sprinkles some insects into the tank.]

"And how could I forget you, Mr. Dragon? You're definitely the coolest one I have! Seriously, with that spiky beard and those fierce eyes, you really look like a dragon!"

[He watches as he drops more insects into the tank.]

"Ugh, and let's be honest, insects are so creepy. How can something so tiny give me the chills? I mean, they have too many legs, and what's up with those antennae? It's like they're plotting something!"

[He shakes his head and glances at the clock.]

"C'mon, c'mon! Axolotl, don't give me that look! I'll be back in three days after the field trip, so try to keep it together! And remember, Mom will be here to feed you while I'm gone, so no wild parties, alright?"

[He finishes feeding them and quickly grabs his bag.]

"Alright, gang, you're all set! Just try not to scare Mom too much, okay? I'll see you later!"

As he stepped out of his room, the delicious aroma of breakfast wafted through the air, instantly making his stomach rumble. He found his mother in the kitchen, expertly flipping pancakes on the griddle, her hair pulled back in a messy bun that hinted at her busy morning.

Without wasting a second, he grabbed a pancake straight off the plate, folding it in half and taking a big bite as he headed for the door.

"Diego! At least sit down and eat," his mother called over her shoulder, eyebrows raised.

"Can't, Mom! Field trip, remember? First day," he replied through a mouthful of pancake, already halfway out the door.

She sighed, crossing her arms but with a soft smile. "Fine, but don't complain later that you're starving."

Then, pausing, he turned back. "Oh, talk about starving can you, uh, feed the lizards while I'm gone? Just a few crickets each, don't let them starve."

His mom froze, visibly horrified. "Diego, crickets? Really? You know how I feel about those things hopping around..."

"C'mon, Mom, please! Just a few crickets, I'll be back in three days," he pleaded with a grin.

She sighed, reluctantly nodding. "Fine. But you'd better make sure not to bring another lizard back after this trip."

He chuckled, raising his hands in surrender. "I promise, no new lizards... this time." He gave her a quick wave and headed out, already thinking about the field trip ahead.

As he made his way to the university, he was half-jogging, half-devouring a pancake he'd taken on the go. Stopping at a red light at the crosswalk, he couldn't stay still—bouncing on his feet, his legs mimicked a running motion even as he waited. Eager to get moving, he took another bite of the pancake, talking to himself between chews.

"Oh man, Mom really outdid herself with this one. So fluffy… and that syrup?"

I glanced up at the red light, bouncing impatiently.

"Alright, come on, come on, you can do it—just turn green already!"

I checked my watch, eyebrows lifting. "Thirty minutes... Still good, still good."

I took another bite, eyes flicking between the pancake and the stubborn red light.

"But I could be better if you just—" He gestured at the light, sighing. "Turn. Green!"

As the light finally turned green, he stuffed the last piece of pancake into his mouth, barely chewing before shouting, "Let'sh go!" His voice came out muffled, thick with food, but his excitement was crystal clear. With that, he took off, bolting across the street, barely swallowing before he picked up his pace.

Hey there! I'm Diego Cruz, and I can hardly contain my excitement because today is officially the most thrilling day of my life! Our biology class is taking a field trip to Gen Industries, one of the most renowned laboratories out there. I've been a huge fan of Dr. Genesis for as long as I can remember—his work with genetic engineering is nothing short of groundbreaking. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll even get an autograph! Just imagine having that as a keepsake!

But enough daydreaming; I need to rush to school! I can't risk getting left behind on the bus for this amazing trip!

As he arrived at school, he spotted his friends eagerly lined up in front of a bright yellow school bus, their chatter filling the air with excitement. Meanwhile, their class president was meticulously checking off names on a clipboard to ensure everyone was accounted for before their much-anticipated field trip.

I waved enthusiastically to my friend Mark, a grin spreading across his face as he joined the line beside him.

"Hey! I was worried I'd miss out on all the fun," I said, glancing around at the throng of students.

Mark chuckled, a teasing glint in his eye. "Let me guess: Did you stay up all night watching documentaries about reptiles again, or was it dinosaurs this time?"

I laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, not this time! I was actually binge-watching a documentary about how chameleons can change colors."

Mark smirked. "That's still a reptile, you know."

I chuckled again. "Oh, you're right! But do you want to know how that works?"

Mark waved a hand dismissively. "Nope! I'd rather stick to watching anime these days."

I grinned at Mark's dismissive gesture. "I know some anime too! Like that one called 'That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Reptile'—so fitting for me, right? And I can't forget 'Godzilla: The Animation.' Now that's a classic!"

Mark raised an eyebrow, chuckling. "Wait, is there really an anime called 'Reincarnated as a Reptile'? Seriously?"

I nodded enthusiastically. "Yep! I guess I'm not the only one obsessed with reptiles."

They both burst into laughter, their joyous sounds mingling with the excited chatter of their classmates. However, their moment was abruptly interrupted as Jason, the notorious school bully, swaggered up, flanked by his gang of equally troublesome friends. With an air of arrogance, he shoved his way to the front of the line, completely disregarding the students who had been waiting patiently.

"Move aside, nerds!" Jason sneered, pushing his way into the line with his gang of followers behind him. "Talking about cartoons and reptiles? You guys are seriously weird."

One of Jason's buddies chimed in, grinning, "Yeah, what's next? A field trip to a pet store? Bet you'll try to bring home a lizard!"

Another gang member laughed, "Or maybe he's hoping to find a girlfriend who loves reptiles as much as he does!"

I leaned closer to Mark, a smirk playing on my lips. "Honestly, his pants are hanging down to his knees. That's way weirder than my love for lizards."

We both stifled our laughter, trying not to attract any more attention.

But Jason wasn't having it. His face turned a shade darker, and in an instant, he lunged forward, grabbing me by my collar and lifting me off the ground. "Did you say something, nerd?"

I swallowed hard, forcing a casual tone. "Nope, I didn't say anything at all."

I gulped but muttered under his breath, "Only that your pants look like they're losing the fight with gravity."

Just as the tension in the air thickened, their class president, Sarah, approached with a clipboard in hand, ready to check attendance.

"Hey, what's going on here?" she asked, looking between Jason and I with a raised eyebrow.

As soon as Sarah strode over, I felt my heart do this weird flip. Of all the people in our class, she had to be the one who stepped in right now. And there she was—confident, a little sarcastic, hands on her hips like she was about to lay down the law. She was my crush, but of course, I hadn't exactly told anyone that. Not even Mark. I mean, who wouldn't like her? She's smart, fearless, and... okay, maybe the one person I hope shares my love for lizards. Or could at least tolerate it, if she knew.

In my wildest dreams, she's into reptiles too, or she has a pet gecko hidden away somewhere that she feeds tiny crickets to at night. But for now, she's just my awesome class president, saving me from Jason with a sassy line and a smirk that—if I'm honest—only makes my crush that much worse.

"We're supposed to be lining up, not causing a scene."

Jason scoffed, dropping my collar but still glaring, smirking. "Just a little friendly banter, Sarah. You know how it is."

I shot Jason a look, but Sarah wasn't fooled. "Friendly or not, we don't have time for this. Get back in line, Jason."

With that timely rescue, Sarah had officially saved me. She shifted gears immediately, pulling out her clipboard and calling out names, her voice carrying across the bustling line as she checked off each classmate to make sure everyone was present.

We're finally on our way to the laboratory, packed into the school bus with excitement buzzing all around. My seatmate? Mark, of course. Not Sarah, as I'd secretly hoped, but hey, it's still going to be a fun ride.

I nudged Mark with a grin. "Alright, serious question. If you could be any animal, what would you pick?"

Mark rolled his eyes, smirking. "Easy. A wolf. You know, fierce, loyal, top of the food chain. What about you?"

I didn't even have to think. "Lizard, obviously! Camouflage, cool scales, and some of them can grow their tails back!"

Mark laughed. "Dude, that's just weird. Besides, what would you even do with a tail?"

I shrugged, grinning. "I dunno, trip people in the hallways?"

He shook his head, chuckling. "You're hopeless."

I glanced over at Sarah a few seats ahead. "Hey, maybe it'd impress someone."

Mark gave me a knowing look. "Yeah, right. Like Sarah would swoon over a guy with a tail."

I grinned, eyes twinkling. "You never know, man. You never know."

As time passed with Mark and me chatting about random stuff, we finally arrived at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The lab was situated in the middle of a lake, surrounded by lush salt marshes and tall grasses. To reach it, we had to cross a bridge that led us over the sparkling water, creating a perfect view of the vibrant wetlands. It felt like we were stepping into a natural oasis, ready to explore the wonders of biology.

As Mark and I stepped off the bus, I couldn't contain my excitement. "Can you believe we're finally here? We're about to meet Dr. Genesis, the most famous biologist! This is amazing!"

Mark grinned, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "I know! I've read so much about his work on genetics and biodiversity. It's like a dream come true!"

Just then, Jason and his gang pushed past us, bumping into me as they went by. "Watch where you're standing, nerds!" Jason sneered, his irritation evident.

I felt a surge of annoyance but kept my cool. "Let's focus on meeting Dr. Genesis."

As we gathered in front of the lab entrance, Sarah stood with her clipboard, preparing for the final roll call. Her friend, Emily, was by her side, handling the entrance passes.

"Okay, everyone, listen up!" Sarah called out, her voice cutting through the chatter. "I'm going to call your names, and when I do, please come up and grab your entrance pass from Emily."

"Megan Johnson!" she announced, scanning the crowd.

"Here!" Megan replied, stepping forward.

"Jake Anderson!"

"Got it!" Jake said, reaching for his pass.

"Yuki Tanaka!"

"Present!" Yuki chimed, flashing a smile as she took her pass.

"Kevin Brown!"

"Right here!" Kevin called, jogging up to Emily.

"Diego Cruz!" Sarah continued, and I stepped forward with a grin, grabbing my pass.

"Mark Sullivan!" she announced next, and Mark stepped up beside me, beaming as he took his pass.

"Jason Smith!" Sarah called, and he sauntered up with a couple of his friends, grabbing his pass before shooting a glance at us.

"Alright, everyone, make sure you have your passes ready as we enter." Sarah said, leading the way. "And remember, let's stick together as a group so no one gets lost during the tour of the lab. We don't want anyone wandering off and missing out on all the cool stuff!"

With that, we all fell into line behind Sarah, excitement buzzing in the air as we prepared to explore the fascinating world of biology within Dr. Genesis's lab.

In front of the lab entrance, we each took turns scanning our entrance passes at a sleek, futuristic kiosk. The scanner beeped, and a bright green light flashed, granting us access. As the door slid open with a smooth whoosh, I couldn't help but turn to Mark, my excitement bubbling over.

"Wow, this is so cool! Even the entrance feels like something out of a sci-fi movie," I said, glancing around at the high-tech screens and glowing panels.

"Right? I can't believe we get to see all this!" Mark replied, his eyes wide with wonder.

I couldn't resist adding, "The only futuristic thing I have is a microwave. I'm starting to feel a bit left behind here."

Mark laughed, puffing out his chest with pride. "Well, I have a PS5! It's like having a mini spaceship in my living room."

"Great, now I'm jealous," I said, rolling my eyes. "While you're off playing your fancy games, I'm over here heating up leftovers like it's 1999."

"Hey, don't knock the PS5! It's not just a console; it's a lifestyle," Mark shot back, grinning smugly.

"Yeah, a lifestyle I wish I had," I muttered, pretending to sulk.

Once we stepped inside, our teacher greeted us with a warm smile, standing beside a staff member from Gen Industries.

"Welcome, everyone!" our teacher said enthusiastically. "I'd like to introduce you to Mr. Thompson. He's a leading researcher here at Gen Industries and will be guiding us through the lab today."

Mr. Thompson waved at us, a friendly smile on his face. "It's great to have you all here! I'm looking forward to showing you what we do and answering any questions you might have along the way. Let's get started!"

As we stepped into the reception area, the entire class stood in awe, taking in the sheer size of the building. The high ceilings soared above us, and floor-to-ceiling windows allowed natural light to flood the space, illuminating the sleek, modern design. The walls were adorned with vibrant murals depicting various biological processes, making it feel like we were inside a living science exhibit.

"Can you believe how huge this place is? It's like a science fiction movie come to life!"

Mark nodded, his eyes wide. "Seriously! It's like a temple of science or something. I half-expect to see a dinosaur walking through the lobby."

Several classmates around us chimed in, sharing their excitement. "I've never seen a building this big! It's incredible!" one girl exclaimed.

"Right? It's like a giant science fortress!" another guy added, adjusting his glasses as he scanned the architecture.

Just then, our attention shifted to the holographic display next to the reception desk. The vibrant images showcased various research projects, and it was unlike anything I had ever seen. I leaned closer, my jaw dropping in disbelief. "Whoa! I never thought I'd see a hologram like this in person! The only ones I've seen are those animated ones on YouTube, like the Godzilla hologram. But this? It's so realistic!"

Mark stepped up beside me, squinting at the hologram. "I know, right? It's almost like you could reach out and touch it. Imagine if my waifu was in a hologram like this! I could see her in 3D! It would be the ultimate fan experience!"

I snorted, shaking my head. "Yeah, because that's totally the first thing you'd do in a science lab. Forget about all the groundbreaking research; you're just here for the holographic waifus!"

Mark chuckled, nudging me with his elbow. "Hey, at least I'm not the one fantasizing about a giant lizard smashing through the city. How's that Godzilla dream coming along? You'll have to tell him to be nice when he steps on my house!"

I rolled my eyes, laughing. "Okay, okay, you got me there! Just think of it this way: if my Godzilla ever gets a holographic makeover, it'll probably be way cooler than your waifu!"

Mark grinned, "True, but only if he can do a victory dance when he takes down a building!"

In the center of the reception area was a futuristic-looking reception desk, where a friendly staff member greeted us. Next to it stood a large, holographic display showcasing the lab's latest research projects and achievements.

Mr. Thompson guided us toward the elevators, which were unlike any I had ever seen. The doors slid open silently, revealing a spacious interior illuminated with soft blue lights. The walls were made of smooth glass that displayed a digital interface, showing various lab floors and their purposes.

"Step inside," Mr. Thompson encouraged. As we piled into the elevator, I marveled at the sleek design. The control panel was touch-sensitive, and as I reached out to select our floor, the elevator responded with a gentle hum and a soft chime, almost like it was alive.

As the elevator glided upward, we could feel a slight shift in the air pressure, a reminder that we were ascending into a realm of scientific advancement. When the doors opened, Mr. Thompson welcomed us to the Genetics Research Wing, and the real adventure began.

"Here, we focus on advanced gene editing techniques, including CRISPR technology," he began, his voice brimming with enthusiasm. "We're exploring ways to eliminate genetic disorders and enhance human health. Imagine a future where diseases like cystic fibrosis and sickle cell anemia could be eradicated before birth!" He paused, allowing us to absorb the information.

As we continued, he pointed to a large observation window. "And this is our Cellular Regeneration Lab. We're studying how to stimulate stem cells to repair damaged tissues and organs. The goal is to one day enable the body to heal itself from severe injuries or degenerative diseases. It could revolutionize medicine and significantly extend human lifespan!"

Mark leaned over to me, eyes wide. "This is incredible! Just think about it—no more organ transplants, and people could recover from serious injuries much faster!"

I nodded, my mind racing with possibilities. "It's like something out of a sci-fi novel. It reminds me of reptiles and how they can regrow their tails! If humans could harness that kind of regeneration, just imagine the lives we could save!"

Mark raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Wait, so you're saying we could be like lizards? Just shed a limb and grow it back later?"

"Exactly!" I replied, warming to the idea. "It's like a real-life superpower! We could walk around without a care, knowing we could heal ourselves!"

Mark chuckled, but there was a hint of apprehension in his voice. "That's kind of wild, but also a little terrifying, don't you think? Imagine someone shedding an arm during a fight and just growing it back. That could get out of hand!"

I laughed, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, it is a bit concerning. But on the flip side, it could really help people recover from serious injuries. Just think about the possibilities for those who lose limbs or suffer from chronic conditions. It's a double-edged sword!"

As we stood there, both of us swept up in the excitement of the moment, the future of biology seemed limitless, and here we were, right in the middle of it all.

Mr. Thompson continued, guiding us through the lab and sharing more about their groundbreaking research. "We also have a section dedicated to bioinformatics," he added. "This is where we analyze vast amounts of genetic data to understand how genes interact with one another. By identifying patterns, we hope to find new treatments and therapies for various diseases."

As we moved through the lab, I could see the excitement in my classmates' faces. This was more than just a field trip; it felt like a glimpse into the future of science and humanity itself.

Later on, we arrived at an area filled with various enclosures showcasing different types of animals, mostly reptiles. The space felt like a blend between a zoo and a museum exhibit, with glass walls and interactive displays that brought the creatures to life.

Mr. Thompson smiled at us. "Alright, everyone, feel free to roam around this area. Take your time and explore! This exhibit is designed to give you a closer look at the fascinating world of reptiles and their unique adaptations."

I felt a rush of excitement as I glanced around at the vibrant enclosures. There were snakes of all colors, lizards basking under heat lamps, and even a few turtles lazily swimming in their ponds. "This is awesome!" I exclaimed to Mark, who was already eyeing a particularly striking green iguana.

"Look at that one!" Mark said, pointing. "It looks like a little dinosaur!"

As we wandered through the exhibit, I noticed Sarah nearby, intently studying a tank filled with chameleons. She had her notebook out, jotting down notes and observations with a look of concentration that I found both impressive and adorable. It was clear she was genuinely interested in the reptiles, and I couldn't help but admire her dedication.

"Hey, look at Sarah!" I said to Mark, gesturing toward her. "She's really into this."

"Yeah, it's kinda cool," Mark replied, grinning. "Maybe she'll start her own reptile club or something."

"Come on, Mark," I defended Sarah, rolling my eyes. "We should be taking notes too. We're here to study after all!"

Mark chuckled, putting up his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, you win! Let's be responsible students."

We spent the next few minutes marveling at the creatures, exchanging random facts and joking about which ones we'd choose as pets. Every so often, I'd glance over at Sarah, who seemed completely absorbed in her notes, and I felt a swell of admiration for her passion. It was a perfect blend of learning and fun, surrounded by the animals I loved so much.

Just as we were settling into the rhythm of studying the exhibits.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion rocked the laboratory, shaking the very foundations of the building!

KA-THOOM!

The sound echoed like thunder, rattling the glass cases and sending papers flying into the air like confetti.

CRACK!

The lights flickered violently, then went out, plunging the room into darkness!

Panic erupted among our class as students shouted and scrambled for safety. Sarah stepped up, trying to restore some semblance of order. "Everyone, stay together!" she urged, her voice cutting through the chaos. Mr. Thompson, our teacher, echoed her plea, attempting to guide us toward the exits.

But just then, I felt a sudden shove from behind. Jason, pushed me hard enough that I stumbled forward, losing my balance and crashing to the ground.

"Get up!" he shouted over the noise, though it felt like he'd done it on purpose.

As I scrambled to my feet.

CRUNCH!

Another explosion detonated, this time shaking the ceiling.

RUMBLE! RUMBLE!

In a heart-stopping moment, a section of the ceiling collapsed, separating me from the rest of the class. I watched in horror as the debris fell, cutting off any chance of escaping with them.

"Diego!" I heard Sarah's voice, frantic and distant.

"Hang on!" Mark called out, but his words were swallowed by the chaos.

The room was now a shadowy battlefield of fallen debris and scattered belongings, darkness wrapping around me like a shroud.

Suddenly, the entire laboratory was plunged into darkness as the blast caused the power to fail. The air was thick with dust, and I coughed, trying to see through the haze. The noise around me faded into a low hum, leaving only the sound of my racing heartbeat as I scanned the wreckage, searching for any sign of my classmates. I could still hear the distant sounds of their frightened shouts, but they felt worlds away.

With a deep breath, I forced myself to focus. I had to find a way to regroup with them. I pushed myself up from the ground, determination igniting within me. Whatever was happening, I wasn't going to let fear keep me from finding my friends.
