Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: It’s Not About the Car

"What?!.."

Bam!

Almost immediately after Lok and Gwen ran off, a body fell from the sky with a thunderous crash, hitting Lok's Audi R8 with incredible speed—the car he'd just bought recently.

In a moment…

It was all over!

The Audi R8's roof was totaled.

But that wasn't the worst of it...

From the powerful impact, all four of the car's windows shattered in every direction, save for the windshield, flying off with tremendous speed.

"Watch out!"

Lok instantly shoved Gwen to the ground, shielding her with his body at the same time.

Screech!

Thud!

George Stacy, who had been at home and heard the explosion-like sound, quickly rushed outside with his gun drawn.

And there…

George saw two people lying on the ground.

And Gwen was under Lok's body.

What...

What the hell?

Ten minutes later.

Woo-woo-woo

Police cars.

An ambulance.

Vehicles swarmed the entire street.

Inside the ambulance.

Gwen, watching as Lok's forehead wound was cleaned and disinfected, asked the doctor with a tense look on her face, "Doctor, is Lok going to be okay?"

Lok waved the doctor off before he could answer. "It's just a scratch."

Such a small injury wasn't going to kill him.

Officer George Stacy and his colleagues were examining the remnants of the body and the car roof. Lok's new Audi R8 was now nothing but scrap metal.

No one would believe that this car had just been bought that very morning.

"Tsk-tsk!"

Lok gritted his teeth and frowned as he straightened his back.

The paramedic, who was busy removing shards of glass from his back, looked at him. "Want some morphine?"

"No need."

Lok flatly refused. "It's not that painful."

He didn't want any drugs, even legally prescribed ones.

Who knew, he might just end up getting hooked on morphine out of nowhere.

After all...

Lok couldn't even quit drinking.

Besides...

He had the endurance talent.

A level-three endurance talent was enough for him to survive non-lethal injuries and bounce back in no time.

Honestly...

If Lok had been alone, the flying glass wouldn't have hurt him at all.

But he hadn't been alone—Gwen was with him.

So…

To protect Gwen, Lok shielded her with his body, becoming something of a porcupine, only with glass instead of quills. Fortunately, Lok's everyday jacket was of excellent quality, and most of the glass shards were blocked by it.

Otherwise, Lok might have ended up suing the manufacturer!

"This is my fault!"

"Don't worry about it."

Lok waved his hand, though Gwen actually was at fault. If he hadn't been trying to protect her, he wouldn't have turned into a porcupine.

Calling him a porcupine might be a bit of an exaggeration.

If one looked closely...

It was mainly his jacket and shirt that took the brunt. Even though they were pricey, the loss wasn't so bad.

Well...

Sure, he suffered a little, too!

"Alright, good. Can you stand and move around?"

"Yes."

Lok nodded and stood up, revealing his eight-pack abs for all to see.

He was oozing masculine charisma!

Gwen blinked as she stared at Lok's eight-pack.

Did he really… have such great abs?

Helen was nearby as well.

She looked at Lok and froze... A sixteen-year-old with that kind of physique...

It just didn't add up.

Helen quickly regained her composure and lightly tapped Gwen's head before handing Lok a shirt. "Here, try it on."

Lok tensed up slightly and moved his limbs, glancing back at Helen. "Thanks, but I'd rather wear my own at home."

Helen didn't say a word; she simply held out the shirt as though she was going to help him put it on right then and there.

Giving in to the challenge, Lok took it from her hand himself.

Wearing George's shirt was one thing, but letting Helen put it on him… Lok would've died from embarrassment.

The shirt fit him well, though.

Lok looked himself over. Aside from the sleeves being slightly long and the shirt a bit big, everything was fine.

"Contact the aviation department—I want to know of any aircraft that's passed over here in the last half hour."

"Yes, sir."

Nearby, George was talking to his assistant. Then he approached Lok, looked at him wearing his shirt, and, without a word, patted him on the shoulder. "You did the right thing. Thank you."

Obviously…

George had seen that this annoying guy had shielded Gwen with his own body.

Now, the officer looked at Lok differently. It was as though he respected him more than before.

And surprisingly...

He even thanked Lok!

After all, Lok's actions matched exactly what George expected of someone in that situation.

The paramedic, who appeared to recognize George, informed him, "Nothing serious, just a few bruises. A few days of rest, and he'll be fine."

Lok didn't mind that George's attitude toward him had improved.

But what if…

What if Lok hadn't been born with an advanced sixth sense? What if he hadn't been talking to Gwen at that moment and had gotten into the car immediately?

He'd be dead.

No chance of survival.

Lok glanced at his poor Audi and asked George, "Have you figured out who it was, Mr. Stacy?"

"Not yet."

George shook his head, then looked at Lok. "But don't worry, we'll do everything we can."

It was impossible to identify who it was.

There was hardly anything left of the body.

And how could you identify a person from that mess?

Even taking fingerprints was impossible.

Lok took another look at his car. He didn't expect news anytime soon, so he simply nodded. "Mr. Stacy, in that case, can I go home?"

George looked at the paramedic.

It was best to follow the expert's recommendation in this matter.

Seeing the look, the paramedic said, "Yes, he can go home. No serious injuries, just bruises and a few bumps. Though the scene looks severe, they reacted in time, so everything turned out alright. He should just head home and rest for a couple of days."

George looked at Lok. "Shall I file a request for a day off before you leave?"

"Nah, don't bother, but, it would be nice if someone could give me a ride. Well, you see..." Lok laughed.

The boy pointed to his Audi R8, which he'd bought that morning, now wrecked beyond repair.

God forbid, I ever find out who did this!
