Chapter 2 - The First Day

The morning sun poured into Alex's room again, a familiar warmth that welcomed him into a new day. He awoke feeling slightly nervous, butterflies fluttering in his stomach at the thought of his first day of college. The chaotic welcome from his friends the previous day was a distant memory, replaced with the reality of lectures, classes, and a new campus.

"Alex! You better not be late!" Maria called from the kitchen, her voice filled with a mix of encouragement and urgency.

"I'm coming!" he shouted back, quickly dressing in his favorite navy-blue hoodie and a pair of jeans. After a quick glance in the mirror, he shoved his phone and wallet into his pockets and headed downstairs.

The kitchen was alive with the sizzle of bacon and the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Lila was already at the table, scrolling through her phone, while Chloe was doodling in a sketchbook, the pages filled with vibrant sketches of the sunrise.

"Morning, sleepyhead!" Lila greeted, looking up with a teasing smile. "Did you dream of your future wife?"

"Not yet, but I'm open to suggestions," Alex replied, rolling his eyes. "Maybe I should make a list."

"Definitely a long one," Lila quipped, winking at Chloe, who laughed and returned to her doodles.

"Breakfast is almost ready," Maria announced, plating the food with her usual flair. "You both eat up; I'll pack you some snacks for the day."

As they sat down to eat, Alex felt the comforting atmosphere around the table ease his anxiety. They shared stories about what they hoped to experience in college, with Lila's enthusiasm lighting the way.

"I'm going to crush those soccer tryouts today," she declared, her eyes sparkling with determination. "And you, Alex, are going to make new friends and find your first love!"

"Yeah, yeah, no pressure," he said, grinning at her enthusiasm.

With breakfast done and bags packed, they grabbed their belongings and headed out. The crisp morning air was refreshing, and as they approached the campus, Alex couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement mixed with apprehension. The sprawling campus was alive with students chatting, laughing, and heading to classes.

"Let's go explore!" Lila declared, leading the way with boundless energy.

They wandered around, soaking in the sights, from impressive lecture halls to serene gardens. Lila pointed out the soccer field and promised to give Alex a full tour of the sports facilities later. They passed groups of students gathered around tables, some promoting clubs and others simply enjoying the sun.

"Hey, Alex!" a voice called out, interrupting their exploration. It was a tall guy with tousled hair and an easy grin—Daniel, a familiar face from high school.

"Daniel! What are you doing here?" Alex asked, feeling a sense of relief wash over him.

"Just checking out the campus and getting a feel for the classes. You?" Daniel replied, glancing at Lila and Chloe, who were exchanging amused looks.

"First day! Trying to survive," Alex said with a chuckle.

"Survive and thrive, man! Join me later for lunch at the student union. I'll introduce you to some friends," Daniel suggested, his excitement infectious.

"Sure! That sounds great," Alex replied, grateful for the invitation.

As Daniel walked off to meet up with others, Lila nudged Alex. "Look at you, making friends already! I knew you'd charm them with your awkwardness."

"Shut up," he retorted, laughing.

After a few more minutes of exploring, they stumbled upon a table where students were signing up for various clubs. Lila's eyes lit up when she saw the soccer team banner.

"I'm signing up!" she declared, practically bouncing on her feet.

"Go for it! I'll hold your spot," Alex said, stepping back as she rushed to the table.

Chloe wandered over to a table covered in art supplies. "They're having an art club meeting later today. I think I'll join!" she said, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm.

"Sounds perfect for you," Alex replied, pleased to see her so excited.

Once Lila finished signing up, they gathered to look at their schedules. The chatter of students around them created a backdrop of energy that Alex found comforting.

"Okay, so what's first?" Lila asked, flipping through her papers.

"Looks like I have an intro to psychology class in twenty minutes," Alex said, glancing at his watch.

"Let's walk you there!" Lila said, ready to support him.

As they made their way to the building, Alex felt a rush of nerves again. "What if I don't know anyone? What if I embarrass myself?"

"Just be yourself, Alex. You're a great guy," Lila reassured him, her tone sincere. "Plus, who wouldn't want to be friends with the charming guy who can't juggle textbooks?"

He chuckled, feeling more at ease. When they reached the classroom, the door opened, revealing a bustling room filled with students.

"Good luck!" Lila said, giving him a quick hug before heading off to her own class.

Alex took a deep breath, stepping inside. The lecture hall was a sea of unfamiliar faces, and he felt a momentary wave of doubt wash over him. But as he found a seat and settled in, he reminded himself of the support waiting for him outside.

Classes began, and Alex found himself absorbed in the professor's lecture, the nervousness giving way to interest. He was struck by the variety of people around him—some taking notes diligently, others chatting quietly. A girl with bright blue hair caught his attention, her doodles in the margins of her notebook distracting him.

After class, he joined the throng of students exiting the building, feeling a little lighter. He spotted Lila chatting with some classmates and waved her over.

"How was it?" she asked eagerly.

"Pretty good! I think I might actually like psychology," Alex admitted, a smile creeping onto his face.

"See? I told you college would be great!"

They exchanged excited chatter about their classes until Alex remembered Daniel's lunch invitation. "Oh, I'm meeting Daniel for lunch. Want to join?"

Lila hesitated for a moment. "I have practice, but go ahead! I'll see you after."

With that, they parted ways, and Alex made his way to the student union. The vibrant atmosphere buzzed with laughter and chatter, and he spotted Daniel at a table with a couple of other guys.

"Hey, Alex! Over here!" Daniel called, waving him over.

As Alex joined them, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something special. The mix of excitement and uncertainty in the air felt electric, and he was ready to embrace whatever came next.

As they ate, Alex listened to Daniel introduce him to his friends, their laughter echoing in the busy hall. A sense of belonging began to settle in, and as he shared stories about his first day, Alex felt the weight of expectations lift.

With newfound confidence, he realized that college might just be the adventure he had been hoping for—a place where he could grow, make memories, and perhaps find romance along the way.
