Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: mysterious lady

The night had passed quietly, the world outside the bar humming with life, but Samuel felt detached, as if everything around him had faded into the background. It wasn't until he found himself sitting across from the mysterious woman that he realized how much he'd been trying to escape from his thoughts. Her presence was both calming and electrifying at the same time, like a puzzle he couldn't quite piece together.

The woman's dark eyes glittered under the dim lights of the bar, her smile playful as she sipped her drink. "You seem like you've got a lot on your mind," she observed, her voice smooth, almost hypnotic.

Samuel shifted in his seat, trying to gather his thoughts. His hand lingered on the glass of whiskey in front of him, the amber liquid swirling with each movement. He had expected a night of simple relaxation, but instead, he found himself sharing stories, the weight of the world lifting just a little with each laugh they exchanged.

"I'm just... not sure about everything right now," Samuel admitted. The words felt strange on his tongue, but he couldn't lie to her, not after everything that had happened. "I've got powers I don't fully understand, a destiny I didn't ask for, and... a lot of people depending on me. I'm not sure how to process it all."

The woman raised an eyebrow, taking a slow sip of her drink before setting it down, her expression softening. "I understand more than you might think," she said, her tone suddenly more serious, a strange depth in her gaze. "The world can feel... overwhelming, especially when you're not entirely sure where you fit into it."

Samuel looked at her, intrigued. "Do you feel that way?"

A faint, knowing smile curled on her lips, but it wasn't a smile of comfort—it was one of understanding. "We all do, at some point or another. It's the nature of being... different."

Samuel furrowed his brow, uncertain of where this conversation was headed. "Different?"

The woman leaned in slightly, her eyes locking with his, the intensity in her gaze making his heart skip a beat. "I'm different, Samuel. I'm not quite what you might think I am."

He raised an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued, but he said nothing, waiting for her to continue. The air between them felt charged now, like a storm ready to break.

The woman studied him for a long moment, her lips curling into a knowing smile. "I suppose there's no point in keeping the mystery, especially when you've already caught on to something... about me."

She paused, as if gathering the right words before continuing, and then she whispered, "I'm a vampire."

The words hit Samuel like a bolt of lightning, his eyes widening as he processed what she had said. A vampire? He blinked, certain he must have misheard her.

"A... vampire?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper, still trying to wrap his mind around it.

The woman nodded, her gaze unwavering. "Yes. I've lived for centuries, blending in with the humans. But I'm not human. I feed on blood. I have... abilities. And I am not the only one of my kind."

Samuel couldn't help but stare at her, the revelation sinking in slowly. "But... I thought vampires were just myths. Stories. Legends."

She chuckled softly, a dark, melodic sound that sent a chill down his spine. "Most of what you've heard are half-truths or stories twisted by time. Vampires are real. We've always been here, hidden in plain sight."

Samuel swallowed, unsure what to think. "So, you... you're not dangerous?"

The woman's smile softened, but there was a strange, cold edge to it. "I am dangerous, Samuel. But not to you, not unless you give me a reason to be. We're not all monsters. Some of us choose to live... quietly. But the world is changing, and things are becoming less simple."

"Why tell me this?" Samuel asked, still processing her confession. "Why now?"

She leaned back in her seat, her gaze flickering to the empty bar around them. "Because you're not like the others. You see things differently, don't you? I can sense it. You've got power, a power that not many can even begin to understand. And that power makes you... a target."

Samuel's chest tightened at the words. A target? He had already learned too much about being hunted—by demons, by angels, by forces he couldn't even fathom. "A target?" he echoed, his voice hoarse. "Who would want to target me?"

The woman's eyes darkened, her voice low and deliberate. "Those who fear you. Those who fear what you might become. There are others like me who want your power. There are even darker forces at play. Forces that don't care whether you're ready or not."

Samuel was silent for a moment, taking in the weight of her words. He had known that his power made him a target, but hearing it from her, from someone who had lived so long, made it feel more real.

"Why help me?" Samuel asked, his voice quieter now. "What's in it for you?"

The woman smirked, her fangs flashing in the dim light as she leaned in closer. "I'm not doing this for you, Samuel. I'm doing this because I see potential in you. And I don't want to see it wasted."

There was a pause as the weight of her words settled between them. Samuel wasn't sure if he should be worried, intrigued, or both. But there was something about her—something that made him feel like he was standing at the edge of a cliff, looking down into an abyss he wasn't sure he wanted to jump into.

He met her gaze, his heart beating faster in his chest. "I don't know if I can trust you."

The woman smiled, a small, almost amused smile that didn't reach her eyes. "That's fair. But trust doesn't happen overnight, does it?"

Samuel didn't reply, his thoughts swirling. There was so much he didn't understand, so much he still had to learn about himself, about the world around him, and about the woman sitting across from him. She was dangerous, yes, but she also seemed... almost protective. He wasn't sure what game she was playing, but he could feel the pull.

"You should be careful, Samuel," she warned, her tone suddenly serious. "There are far worse things out there than me. And they will come for you, sooner or later."

He nodded, absorbing her words, but inside, he felt a fire kindling. He wasn't sure what his next step should be, but he knew one thing: his journey was far from over.

And as the night stretched on, he realized that meeting her might just be the beginning of something bigger than he ever expected.
