Chapter 14 - Deals

Sariel turned on his heel, his movements unhurried but deliberate, the faint echo of his boots clicking against the polished floor adding a finality to his departure. His silver eyes held a glint of something darker—mockery mingled with a faint trace of warning. He strolled toward the elevator with the air of someone completely unbothered, his posture relaxed, hands slipping casually into the pockets of his tailored coat.

Lucifer remained rooted in place, his jaw tight and his fists clenched at his sides. His dark eyes followed Sariel's retreating figure, the flicker of anger simmering just beneath the surface. He exhaled sharply through his nose, the sound almost a growl, but his body remained tense, restrained. The Goddess's hand still rested lightly on his arm, her calming presence the only thing keeping him from storming after his brother.

When Sariel reached the elevator, he paused, one hand lazily pressing the button as the other remained tucked in his pocket. He waited, his head tilting slightly as though he were considering something amusing. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and Sariel stepped inside but didn't turn to face the panel. Instead, he pivoted on his heel to look back at them, his smirk widening.

His eyes found Lucifer first, narrowing slightly in playful challenge, before shifting to the Goddess. He held her gaze for a beat longer, something almost unreadable flickering behind his usual smugness—a mixture of mischief and calculated intent.

"Before you get too cozy with your family reunion," Sariel began, his voice smooth and laced with mock sincerity, "I think it's only fair I share something with you." He stepped back into the elevator, one hand gripping the edge of the door to keep it open. His eyes flicked briefly to Lucifer, his grin sharpening.

"Lucifer made a deal with Dad," Sariel continued, his tone dripping with feigned innocence. "He agreed to send us back to Hell."

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap. The Goddess's brow furrowed deeply, her fingers tightening on Lucifer's arm. Her lips parted slightly in a sharp intake of breath, but she said nothing, her ancient eyes locking onto Sariel with a mixture of disbelief and quiet fury.

Lucifer stiffened, his shoulders squaring as his eyes darkened, a dangerous edge creeping into his expression. He took a single step forward, his movements slow and deliberate, his posture radiating restrained fury. "Sariel—"

Sariel cut him off with a wave of his free hand, his smirk growing wider. "Oh, don't worry, little brother," he said, his voice light but mocking. "It's going to be very difficult for Dad to deal with me. After all, I can easily overpower you if you try to enforce that deal for me."

He leaned slightly against the doorframe, his body language oozing nonchalance, but his silver eyes gleamed with a pointed sharpness as they flicked back to the Goddess. "But you, Mother," he added, his voice softening into something almost pitying, "you're in a mortal body now. Your true powers are sealed, which makes you... vulnerable." His gaze lingered on her for a moment, his smirk curling into something cruelly amused. "I'm afraid the same can't be said for you."

The Goddess's eyes narrowed, her lips pressing into a firm line. She held Sariel's gaze, her expression unreadable but her posture unwavering. If his words affected her, she didn't let it show.

Lucifer, on the other hand, bristled, his fists tightening further, the veins in his neck standing out as he struggled to keep his composure. He took another step forward, his voice low and dangerous. "You're crossing a line, Sariel."

Sariel laughed softly, a rich, melodic sound that only seemed to fan the flames of Lucifer's anger. "Relax, brother," he said, straightening and releasing the door as the elevator chimed impatiently. "Just thought you both deserved to know the stakes."

With a mockingly casual wave, Sariel stepped fully into the elevator, turning his back to them at last. He raised a hand in a lazy goodbye as the doors began to slide shut, his smirk still firmly in place. "Good luck, Lucifer," he called out just before the doors sealed him from view. "You're going to need it."

The soft hum of the elevator descending was the only sound in the room for a long moment. Lucifer stood frozen, his chest rising and falling with barely restrained fury. The Goddess moved her hand from his arm to his clenched fist, her touch gentle but grounding.

"Lucifer," she said softly, her voice steady despite the storm swirling around them. Her ancient gaze searched his face, her expression filled with both strength and quiet resolve. "What did you do?"

Lucifer closed his eyes, his jaw tightening before he turned away abruptly, walking toward the window. His movements were sharp, purposeful, but his shoulders sagged slightly as he placed both hands against the glass, his reflection staring back at him.

"I made a deal," he admitted finally, his voice low and laced with regret. "Because I thought it was the only way to fix this."

The Goddess watched him, her expression softening as she took a step closer. "And now?"

Lucifer turned his head slightly, his eyes meeting hers through the reflection. There was a fire in them, tempered by guilt but fueled by determination.

"Now," he said, his voice firm, "I make sure I uphold the end of my deal."
