Days passed, each one feeling more surreal than the last. Lira's sense of self was slipping, her reality twisting into fragments. She began to see Aeron's reflection in mirrors, his shadow lingering just behind her own. She heard his voice in the rustle of leaves, felt his cold touch in the night air. Her sleep became restless, haunted by dreams that left her drained and gasping for breath.
The other Archivists grew more concerned. Evelyn approached her again, her face lined with worry. " Lira, you're not well. You need to let this memory go. It's consuming you. "
Lira forced a smile, but it felt hollow. " I can't let him go Evelyn. He..... He's a part of me now. "
Evelyn's expressions hardened, and she shook Lira's hand, her grip firm. "Then let us help you. We can perform the severance ritual together. It's your only chance to break free. "
Lira's heart clenched at the thought. The ritual would mean saying goodbye to Aeron forever, erasing his memories from her mind. The thought left her feeling hollow, as though she would be tearing out a piece of herself. She wanted to refuse, to cling to the memories, but a part of her knew that if she didn't act soon, there might be nothing left of her to save.
Reluctantly, she agreed to the ritual, setting it for the following night. As dusk fell, she retreated to her study, her hands trembling as she picked up Aeron's crystal. She told herself it would be her final goodbye, her last glimpse of him before she severed their connection forever.
But as she touched the crystal, she felt an overwhelmurge surge of emotion - Aeron's anger, his despair, his longing. The force of it was like a tidal wave, pulling her under, and before she knew it, she was once again in his world.
This time, she found herself in darkened room, lit only by a single, flickering candle. Aeron stood in the shadows, his face obscured, his body tense. He looked at her with a raw intensity that sent a shiver down her spine.
" You're leaving me, " He said, his voice barely more than a whisper.
Lira took a step back, her heart pounding. " I have to, Aeron. You're... You're destroying me"
His eyes darkened, and he moved closer, his presence like a shadow pressing in on her. "You belong to me, Lira. You always have. You can't just walk away. "
His words wrapped around her like a chain, binding her to him, and she felt her resolve wavering. She knew she should resist, but the pull of his voice, the promise of his presence, was too strong. She had become addicted to the darkness, to the thrill of being seen, of being known.
" I don't want to leave. " She admitted, her voice breaking, " But if I stay.... I'll lose myself."
Aeron's gaze softened, a flicker of sadness in his eyes. "Then let me take your pain, Lira. Let me become a part of you, so that we are never seperated again. "
The room seemed to enclose around her,and she felt a suffocating weight settling over her. He was offering her a choice - to surrender to him completely, to let him consume her, or to break free and risk losing him forever.
Before she could respond, the memory began to shift, the world blurring around her. She felt herself being pulled back, her senses growing numb, until she was once again in her study, clutching the crystal in her trembling hands.
The ritual was set to began at midnight. Lira joined Evelyn and the other Archivists in the ritual chamber, a cold, echoing space beneath the Archive, lit only by flickering torches. The walls were inscribed with ancient runes, symbols of protection and severance that had been passed down through generations of Archivists.
Evelyn took her hand, her expressions gentle but firm. " Are you ready, Lira? "
Lira nodded, though her heart felt like it was breaking. She could still feel Aeron's presence lingering in her mind, his voice whispering promises of eternity, of belonging. But she knew, if she didn't go through the ritual, she would be lost forever, consumed by his memory.
As the Archivists began to chant, the air grew heavy, charged with energy. Lira closed her eyes, focusing on the sound of the voices, grounding herself in the present. She felt a strange warmth spreading through her chest, a soothing light that pushed back the darkness within her.
But then she felt a cold hand on her shoulder, and a familiar voice whispered in her ear.
"Don't leave me, Lira. You're mine."
Her eyes snapped open, and she saw Aeron standing before her, his figure faint and flickering, like a shadow cast by candlelight. His gaze was filled with desperation, with a longing that bordered on madness.
The Archivists' voices grew louder, their chants filling the room, and she felt the bond between her and Aeron beginning to weaken, like a cird being slowly severed. Pain flared in her chest, and she gasped, clutching her heart as a wave of sorrow washed over her.
Aeron reached out to her, his hand passing through hers, his voice a desperate plea. " Lira, please don't leave me. We are bound, you can't sever me without severing yourself".
Tears filled her eyes, but she forced herself to speak, her voice barely audible. " Goodbye Aeron. "
With a final surge of energy, the ritual reached its climax, and she felt a sudden, sharp pain as the bond snapped, leaving her feeling hollow and empty. Aeron's figure wavered, his expression one of betrayal and sorrow before he vanished, leaving only silence in his wake.
As the echoes of the ritual faded, Lira fell to her knees, her aching with the loss. She had freed herself from Aeron's grip, but in doing so, she had left a part of herself behind, a part that would forever long for the darkness, for the memory of him.
The other Archivists helped her to her knees, their faces somber. Evelyn placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, but Lira barely felt it, her mind lost in the emptiness, that Aeron had left behind.
She was free - but at what cost?
