Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: A Test of Strength

The journey continued smoothly over the next few days, the landscape changing from forested paths to open plains and winding hills. The Enhanced Healing Touch had proven invaluable—I could now treat wounds and ailments with an efficiency that astonished the occasional traveler or villager I aided.

Frost had grown more accustomed to life on the road, often scouting ahead and alerting me to any unusual sounds or movements. His instincts were sharp, and his companionship had become more than just comforting; it was essential. Together, we faced whatever lay ahead, our bond deepening with each day.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, we approached a quiet, isolated village. Unlike the other villages I'd visited, this one had an eerie stillness to it, with doors shut tight and barely any sign of movement. I spotted a few villagers lingering on their doorsteps, casting cautious glances my way before quickly retreating inside.

I approached a small house where an elderly man sat on the porch, his face drawn with worry.

"Good evening," I greeted him, trying to sound as non-threatening as possible. "I'm a traveling healer. Is something wrong here?"

The old man eyed me suspiciously, but seeing Frost at my side seemed to reassure him. "It's the fever. Hit us about a week ago. Half the village is bedridden, and our healer is one of them. We're doing what we can, but…" His voice trailed off, a hint of desperation in his eyes.

"Let me help," I said, setting down my pack. "I have experience with fevers. I can take a look at those affected and see what I can do."

He hesitated for only a moment before nodding and leading me to the largest house in the village, where several patients were being cared for by family members. The smell of sweat and sickness hung thick in the air as I entered, and I saw that the fever had taken a toll on them—faces flushed, bodies weak, some unable to even lift their heads.

I got to work immediately, using my Enhanced Healing Touch to soothe fevers and ease breathing. The effect was instant—faster than I'd expected. Within moments, patients who had been bedridden for days were sitting up, their expressions shifting from pain to relief. The villagers watching me murmured in awe, unable to believe what they were seeing.

"You really are a healer," the elderly man whispered, his eyes wide.

I smiled, though I was careful not to reveal the source of my abilities. "Just doing what I can," I replied, moving to the next patient and repeating the process. By nightfall, nearly every sick villager had been treated, their symptoms abated.

The villagers gathered to thank me, offering food and supplies. But as grateful as they were, there was still a shadow over their faces. I could feel it—the lingering fear of what might come next, a worry that sickness and suffering were never far behind.

A Stranger in the Dark

That night, after the villagers had returned to their homes, I made camp just outside the village, not wanting to overstay my welcome. As I sat by the fire, Frost curled up at my side, a faint rustling in the trees caught my attention.

I turned, my senses on high alert. Slowly, a figure emerged from the shadows—a cloaked stranger, their face hidden, but I could sense a peculiar presence, something unsettlingly familiar.

"Are you the healer they speak of?" the stranger asked, their voice smooth and steady.

"Yes," I replied cautiously, my hand instinctively reaching toward my pouch.

The figure stepped closer, their eyes glinting in the firelight. "You have remarkable abilities, abilities I've not seen before," they remarked, their gaze sharp. "I'd like to see them for myself."

I tensed, wondering if this stranger was a threat or merely curious. "Who are you?" I asked, keeping my voice even.

The stranger chuckled softly. "A seeker of knowledge, like yourself," they said. "You see, there are whispers of those who can heal with a mere touch. I wanted to know if the rumors were true."

There was something unnerving about their calm demeanor, but I forced myself to stay composed. "And what do you plan to do with this knowledge?" I asked, trying to gauge their intentions.

The stranger smiled, though it didn't reach their eyes. "Perhaps I will return to see you again," they said cryptically, before turning and disappearing into the night as quickly as they'd come.

Frost growled softly, watching the figure vanish. I felt a chill settle over me, realizing that the stranger had known more about me than I'd liked. Whoever they were, it was clear they were no ordinary traveler.

The Journey Continues

The next morning, I woke early, still shaken by the encounter but eager to leave the village behind. The gratitude of the villagers was palpable, but the stranger's words lingered in my mind, a warning of sorts. Whoever they were, they would likely return, perhaps sooner than I'd prefer.

As I continued on my journey, I took comfort in the open road stretching before me, the possibilities of the unknown waiting to be explored. I didn't know what challenges lay ahead, but I felt a resolve harden within me. Each encounter, each life I touched, was a step toward something greater—a purpose I couldn't yet define but felt compelled to pursue.

With Frost trotting beside me, I ventured onward, ready for whatever lay beyond the next hill.
