Chapter 11 - The King's Favor and a Hidden Rivalry

Days after the fight, Kai's reputation had grown stronger than ever. News of the confrontation with Prince Cedric spread through the Academy and even reached the ears of the king himself. Though many nobles were appalled, the commoners found in Kai a source of inspiration, and the royals—well, some of them were starting to wonder if they had underestimated this commoner with the heart of a lion.

The Academy announced a prestigious event for its students: the Royal Winter Ball. It was an exclusive celebration, attended by the kingdom's most powerful nobles, royalty, and highly esteemed guests. For the first time, Kai had been invited.

On the day of the ball, the entire Academy was bustling with excitement. Kai, though humbled by the invitation, felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. He was well aware that his presence would raise eyebrows. After all, he was the first commoner in decades to attend a royal event of such stature.

As Evening Fell

Kai arrived at the grand ballroom, dressed in a tailored black suit, his hair neatly styled. The ballroom was a sight to behold, with crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, walls adorned with golden tapestries, and tables lined with the finest delicacies. As he entered, the room fell silent, heads turning to stare at the unexpected guest.

Seraphina spotted him first. She wore a flowing emerald gown, her hair adorned with delicate jewels that shimmered in the light. Her eyes lit up as she approached him, a warm smile gracing her lips. "Kai! You look… amazing," she said, her voice soft, yet sincere.

Kai smiled, bowing slightly. "You're the one who looks amazing, Seraphina. I've never seen anything like this."

They shared a brief moment before the crowd began to part, revealing none other than the king. King Alaric, a man of imposing stature, with a crown that shone like the sun, approached Kai with a measured gaze.

"Kai, isn't it?" the king asked, his voice calm yet powerful.

Kai bowed deeply. "Yes, Your Majesty. It's an honor to be here."

The king gave him an approving nod. "I've heard much about you, young man. It takes courage to stand against one's peers, especially those of higher status. But you chose to defend your principles, and that is commendable."

Kai kept his head down, feeling a rush of gratitude. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I only did what I felt was right."

The king chuckled, a glimmer of warmth in his gaze. "I admire that. Perhaps you can bring fresh ideas to our kingdom." He turned to the crowd. "Let us welcome Kai, a young man of both bravery and humility."

The guests clapped, albeit with mixed expressions. Some nobles clapped politely, while others muttered under their breath. But in that moment, Kai felt something he hadn't felt before—recognition. A sense that his actions were seen, acknowledged, and even respected by someone as important as the king.

The Dance and the Rival

As the ball continued, music filled the air, and couples took to the floor to dance. Seraphina turned to Kai, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Would you care to dance?"

Kai hesitated for a moment but nodded, offering her his hand. They moved to the center of the ballroom, and as the music began, Kai followed her lead, doing his best to match her graceful steps. Though he had limited experience, he was a quick learner, and together they danced in harmony, drawing the attention of the entire room.

Prince Cedric, standing by the side, clenched his fists as he watched them. His gaze was cold, a spark of anger simmering within. Cedric's friends noticed and whispered among themselves, their glances darting between Kai and the prince.

Unable to bear it any longer, Cedric made his way to them, interrupting their dance. "Pardon my intrusion," he said with a forced smile, "but I believe this dance belongs to the nobility."

Seraphina frowned, but before she could respond, Cedric looked at Kai, his voice filled with disdain. "A commoner may be invited to a royal event, but that doesn't mean he should forget his place."

Kai kept his expression calm, though his eyes held a spark of defiance. "Respect isn't defined by status, Prince Cedric. It's something you earn through your actions."

The tension between them was palpable, and Seraphina sensed that things were about to escalate. Just as she was about to intervene, the king's advisor, a wise old man named Lord Eldric, stepped forward, drawing everyone's attention.

"Gentlemen," Lord Eldric said, his voice soothing yet firm, "this is a celebration, not a battleground. Let us not turn this event into a display of rivalry. Prince Cedric, you have other partners eager to dance. And Kai, you may continue with Lady Seraphina."

Cedric clenched his jaw, forced to retreat by Lord Eldric's intervention, though his glare never left Kai. With a reluctant nod, he stepped away, allowing them to continue their dance. But Cedric's friends were already whispering, plotting ways to bring Kai down.

The Song That Captured Hearts

After the dance, Kai found himself by the musicians, drawn to the melody they played. Seraphina noticed and encouraged him, "Would you like to sing?"

Kai hesitated, but as he looked around the room, he noticed the judgmental glances, the condescending whispers from some of the nobles. He took a deep breath, then nodded, stepping onto the small stage beside the musicians.

As he began to sing, he chose a soft, melancholic tune—Tum Hi Ho. Translating it in his heart to English, he poured out his emotions, the sadness and longing he had felt ever since arriving in this world, the struggle of being seen as nothing but a commoner despite his own dreams and abilities.

"Without you, I am incomplete," he sang, his voice rich and powerful. "You are my heart, you are my soul."

The hall fell silent as his voice filled the room, raw and filled with longing. His song touched a nerve, resonating with the struggles he had faced, and with the emotions others hadn't yet understood. Even the nobles who had looked down on him now watched in awe, captivated by his performance.

The king listened, his face thoughtful, his eyes softened by the words. Even Cedric couldn't deny the impact of the song, though he stood to the side, clenching his fists. Seraphina, however, was lost in Kai's voice, a warmth filling her heart as she remembered every moment he had defended her, every time he had risked himself.

A New Connection

As the song ended, the hall erupted into applause, some clapping politely, others genuinely moved by his performance. The king nodded approvingly, and even some of the nobles began to see Kai in a different light. Seraphina was the first to approach him, her eyes shining.

"Kai, that was… beautiful," she said, her voice almost a whisper.

He gave her a small smile, his heart still racing from the performance. "I only sang what I felt. This world… it's so different from mine, and sometimes it feels like I'm fighting it alone."

She took his hand, her gaze warm and sincere. "You're not alone, Kai. You have me. And I believe in you."

Kai felt a warmth spread through him, a feeling he hadn't experienced since coming to this world. For the first time, he realized that he wasn't truly alone—that he had someone by his side who understood and believed in him.

Just then, the king approached, a smile on his face. "Kai," he said, his voice resonant, "you have a gift not only for battle but for art. Such depth is rare, even among those who are trained in the art of performance."

Kai bowed. "Thank you, Your Majesty."

The king continued, his tone thoughtful. "This kingdom could use someone with your spirit, someone who can bridge the gap between nobility and commoners. Perhaps there's more you can contribute to our land."

Kai felt a surge of gratitude. "I would be honored to serve in any way I can, Your Majesty."

As the night drew on, Kai knew that he had gained something invaluable—a bond with the king, a deepened connection with Seraphina, and a reputation that now extended beyond just his skills in battle. He was no longer just a commoner in the eyes of those around him. He was something more—someone with a future, someone with purpose.

But as the night ended, he noticed Cedric watching him from afar, his face shadowed by anger. Kai knew that the prince would not forgive him easily. The rivalry was far from over, and he sensed that the battles ahead would test him even more than before. Yet with Seraphina by his side, he felt ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
