Years passed, each one blurring into the next as Elysia and Adric drifted from village to village, from kingdom to kingdom. The lands they traversed changed as much as they did; wars erupted, plagues returned, and empires rose only to fall. Through it all, Elysia began to understand the delicate balance of her existence, her eternal youth veiling the wisdom she accumulated over centuries.
In their new home—a bustling coastal town where no one cared to ask questions—Elysia attended the local gatherings, her appearance fitting in with the other girls her age. But the mask of mortality grew heavy. She noticed the subtle, tragic beauty of human life, the way friends she had made in her guise of youth would grow older and move on, while she remained unchanged.
One evening, as they wandered the rocky shore, Elysia turned to Adric with a question she had feared to ask. "Do you regret it?" She fixed him with a piercing gaze. "Changing me, I mean."
Adric hesitated, the waves lapping softly at their feet as he met her gaze. "Every day," he admitted quietly, his voice a raw edge of guilt and resignation. "You were meant to live a human life, to grow and experience the fullness of mortality. And I took that from you."
Elysia looked away, unsure whether to feel angry or grateful. Adric's face softened, and he continued, "But seeing the strength you've found, I am also proud. You have embraced this life, despite what it has cost you."
They walked in silence, the gravity of his words settling between them. Yet as the night wore on, Elysia couldn't shake the feeling that she was missing something, a greater purpose than simply drifting in Adric's shadow. Her thoughts turned to those brief friendships she had experienced, the fleeting moments of normalcy, the longing she felt each time she had to abandon them.
A faint light flickered in her mind: the possibility of creating her own family. It would be a complicated act, but the idea lingered, pressing against her heart. Could she offer someone else the companionship she so deeply craved, someone to share the weight of centuries with?
Before she could share these thoughts, Adric stopped abruptly, his eyes fixed on something in the distance. Following his gaze, Elysia saw two figures approaching, cloaked in dark robes. She could tell by the way they moved that they were not human.
"Stay behind me," Adric whispered, his voice taut. Elysia's senses sharpened, the smell of blood and death clinging to the strangers.
One of them, a tall woman with silver-streaked hair, lowered her hood and offered a cold smile. "Adric," she greeted him with a tone that was both familiar and dangerous. "It's been too long."
Elysia felt Adric tense beside her. "Calista. What brings you here?"
Calista's eyes drifted to Elysia, studying her with an almost predatory interest. "Rumors of a young daywalker have reached far and wide," she said, her voice laced with intrigue. "An unusual talent… for one so young."
Adric's hand rested on Elysia's shoulder protectively. "She is none of your concern."
"On the contrary," Calista replied, her gaze still locked on Elysia. "She is very much of interest. Do you know how rare her kind is? A daywalker could hold power beyond measure—if trained properly."
Elysia's chest tightened. Power? She'd never considered her ability as anything more than an odd blessing. She shifted closer to Adric, her mind racing, but her eyes remained defiant as she met Calista's gaze.
"Leave us," Adric demanded. "We have no part in your games."
Calista laughed softly, the sound chilling. "Games, Adric? You think too little of our kind's future. But I'll honor your request… for now. Just know that our world is changing, and beings like her"—she gestured toward Elysia—"cannot remain hidden forever."
The strangers turned and vanished into the darkness, leaving Elysia and Adric alone with the steady roar of the waves.
"Who were they?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper.
"Others like us," Adric answered, his voice heavy with worry. "But their ambitions are dangerous. They see you as a weapon, a force they could control to reshape our world."
Elysia looked out over the sea, her heart pounding with a mixture of fear and curiosity. She could feel the change stirring in her, the questions she'd been holding back. Perhaps her future lay beyond simply surviving, perhaps her purpose was more than just a quiet life in the shadows.
But tonight, she held tightly to the certainty of her place beside Adric, silently vowing to find her own path in the world they inhabited.
