Chapter 21 - Hei Yueh (8)

Xiǎo Lán's eyes narrowed as she watched Ling Xiao execute a series of swift and precise movements, his sword flashing in the sunlight. She had been training him for months now, and his progress was impressive, but she knew that he still had much to learn.

"Your technique is improving, but your mind is still clouded by doubt," she said, her voice stern but encouraging. "You must learn to clear your mind and focus on the present moment."

Ling Xiao nodded, his expression determined. He knew that Xiǎo Lán was right - his mind was still a barrier to his true potential.

"Let us try something new," Xiǎo Lán said, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. "We will practice a technique that requires absolute focus and clarity of mind."

Ling Xiao's eyes widened as Xiǎo Lán began to explain the technique, his mind racing with excitement and anticipation.

For hours, they trained, Ling Xiao's mind and body pushed to the limit. Sweat dripped from his brow, his muscles ached, but he refused to give up.

Finally, as the sun began to set, Xiǎo Lán nodded in approval. "You are making progress, Ling Xiao. But remember, the greatest battles are fought within the mind. You must learn to conquer your own doubts and fears."

Ling Xiao bowed, his eyes burning with determination. He knew that he still had much to learn, but with Xiǎo Lán's guidance, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.

Xiǎo Lán's eyes gleamed with intensity as she began to explain the next technique. "This is a advanced method of cultivating spiritual energy. By absorbing energy from your surroundings, you can increase the power of your attacks exponentially."

Ling Xiao's eyes widened as he listened, his mind racing with the possibilities.

"Watch closely," Xiǎo Lán said, raising her hand. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, her body glowing with a soft blue light. The air around her seemed to ripple and distort, as if the very fabric of reality was being manipulated.

With a swift motion, she struck the tree in front of her, her hand glowing with a burst of water-inspired spiritual energy. The tree shuddered, a small hole appearing in its trunk.

Ling Xiao's eyes were impressed, but Xiǎo Lán was not finished. She took a step back, her eyes flashing with determination.

"Now, watch as I absorb the spiritual energy from my surroundings."

Her body began to glow with a soft white light, the air around her seeming to vibrate with energy. The plants and trees nearby began to lean in, as if drawn to her power.

With a swift motion, she struck the ground, her hand glowing with a massive burst of spiritual energy. The ground shook, a massive crater appearing in the earth. The nearby trees were uprooted, their trunks shattered.

Ling Xiao's eyes were wide with awe. "That's incredible!"

Xiǎo Lán smiled, her eyes gleaming with pride. "Now it's your turn. Remember, focus on absorbing the energy from your surroundings, and then channel it into your attack."

Ling Xiao nodded, his mind racing with excitement. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and began to focus. The air around him seemed to ripple and distort, as if the very fabric of reality was being manipulated.

With a swift motion, he struck the ground, his hand glowing with a burst of spiritual energy. The ground shook, a small crater appearing in the earth.

Xiǎo Lán smiled, her eyes gleaming with approval. "Well done, Ling Xiao. You are a quick learner."

Ling Xiao grinned, his eyes burning with determination. "I won't stop until I master this technique."

Xiǎo Lán's smile grew wider. "I have no doubt you will."

The Qin family's anger and frustration grew as they received news of their failed assassination attempt. They had been so sure that their plan would succeed, and yet Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán had once again thwarted their efforts.

"We must not underestimate them again," said Master Qin, his voice cold and calculating. "We will hire a mercenary, someone with the skills and expertise to defeat them once and for all."

The family nodded in agreement, their faces twisted with hatred and determination.

And so, they set out to find the perfect mercenary, someone who would stop at nothing to eliminate Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán.

After many days of searching, they finally found him - a ruthless and skilled warrior named Jian.

Jian was known for his brutality and efficiency, and the Qin family knew that he would not rest until his targets were eliminated.

"We want you to defeat Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán," said Master Qin, his eyes gleaming with intensity. "We will pay you a handsome sum, but we expect results."

Jian nodded, his face expressionless. "I will not fail."

And with that, the mercenary set out to track down Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán, his heart filled with a singular focus - to eliminate them and collect his reward.

Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán, unaware of the danger that was coming their way, continued their training, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.

But the Qin family's plans were already in motion, and soon, the two would face their greatest challenge yet.

Ling Xiao's training continued unabated, his focus solely on mastering the technique of drawing spiritual energy from his surroundings. He spent every waking moment practicing, his mind and body pushed to the limit.

Xiǎo Lán watched over him, her eyes keen with observation. She could see the determination in his eyes, the drive to perfect this technique.

"Ling Xiao, your progress is impressive," she said, her voice encouraging. "But remember, this technique is not just about drawing energy, it's about control. You must learn to harness it, to focus it."

Ling Xiao nodded, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He was exhausted, but he refused to give up.

"I won't stop until I master it," he said, his eyes burning with intensity.

Xiǎo Lán smiled, her eyes gleaming with pride. "I know you won't. You have the heart of a true warrior."

And so Ling Xiao continued to train, his body and mind pushed to the limit. He practiced drawing energy from the air, from the earth, from every living thing around him.

Slowly but surely, he began to feel the energy building inside him, a powerful force that threatened to burst free at any moment.

Xiǎo Lán watched over him, her eyes keen with observation. She could see the energy growing inside him, a force that would soon be unstoppable.

"Ling Xiao, you're getting close," she said, her voice filled with excitement. "Remember to control it, to focus it."

Ling Xiao nodded, his eyes burning with intensity. He could feel the energy building inside him, a powerful force that would soon be unleashed.

And then, in a burst of light and energy, Ling Xiao's body glowed with a brilliant radiance. The air around him seemed to vibrate with power, as if the very fabric of reality was being manipulated.

Xiǎo Lán's eyes widened in awe. "Ling Xiao, you've done it!" she exclaimed. "You've mastered the technique!"

Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán celebrated his mastery of the technique, but their joy was short-lived. A whistle pierced the air, followed by a mocking laugh. They turned to see Jian, perched atop a nearby tree, his eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Ah, the technique you just learned?" Jian said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "That's cute. That's something a two-circle Cultivator would know. You're not even at that level yet, Ling Xiao."

Xiǎo Lán's expression turned serious, her eyes narrowing. "Who are you?" she demanded.

Jian jumped down from the tree, his movements graceful and fluid. "My name is Jian," he said, his voice dripping with confidence. "And I have a job."

He released his aura, a powerful and intimidating energy that made Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán take a step back.

"My job is to kill you," Jian said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Both of you."

Ling Xiao and Xiǎo Lán exchanged a look, their hearts racing with anticipation. They knew they were in for a challenge.

"You're a mercenary," Xiǎo Lán said, her voice firm. "Hired by the Qin family, no doubt."

Jian nodded, his smile growing wider. "You're smart, Xiǎo Lán. But not smart enough. You see, I've been watching you two for a while now. And I know your weaknesses."

Ling Xiao's eyes narrowed, his grip on his sword tightening. "We'll see about that," he said, his voice low and deadly.

But Jian just laughed. "Oh, I'm shaking in my boots. You two are no match for me. I've taken down Cultivators far stronger than you."

Xiǎo Lán's eyes flashed with anger. "We'll see about that," she said, her voice cold and deadly.

But Jian just smiled. "I'm looking forward to it. You two are going to be a fun challenge."

And with that, the tension between them was palpable, the air thick with anticipation. But the battle had yet to begin.
