By the time Yashamaru and his group of Sand Ninja reached the Zhu Yan Forest, all the guards had already been defeated. The workers, while spared from attack, had fled in panic—ordinary civilians couldn't be involved in battles between ninjas.
Yashamaru's eyes narrowed as he took in the scene: there were only two people present. One was Morishita, an elite jounin from Konoha, and the other was Reiki, Tsunade's promising medical-nin who had impressed during the Chunin Exams. But what puzzled him more was why Reiki seemed to be treating some of the injured Sunagakure ninjas.
"Don't misunderstand. We were just passing by and saw that your ninjas were injured. Our medical ninja here is just providing treatment!" Morishita said with an exaggeratedly innocent expression, his hands open wide.
A vein pulsed on Yashamaru's forehead. Morishita, still holding a blood-stained kunai, claimed to be helping? Did he think they were idiots?
"Konoha's ninjas attacked us first. We have no choice but to retaliate. Attack!" Yashamaru shouted, launching dozens of kunai controlled by chakra threads towards Morishita. The other Sand Ninja followed suit, springing into action.
"Reiki, hurry up. I'll make sure you have plenty of patients to work on," Morishita said, summoning a shadow clone to counter Yashamaru's assault.
Despite being an elite jounin, Morishita struggled to handle the dozen or so Sand Ninja while keeping an eye on Reiki. The toll on his stamina and chakra reserves started showing, slowing him down.
"Hey, you look unwell. Let me treat you," a voice suddenly interjected.
Reiki appeared in front of Yashamaru, fists at the ready.
"What? Reiki the medical ninja—" Before Yashamaru could finish, Reiki's punch landed squarely in his stomach.
"Urgh…"
Yashamaru's eyes widened in shock. He prided himself on his physical resilience. Was this really a medical ninja's strength? During the Chunin Exams, Reiki had shown exceptional talent in healing and strategy. But this sheer power was unexpected.
"Looks like your stomach hurts. You must be sick. And there are some fractures—I'll treat those too," Reiki said, following up with a series of rapid punches. Yashamaru, having focused all his attention on Morishita, had no defense prepared for Reiki's attack. He fell, dazed and incapacitated.
The remaining Sand Ninja realized too late what was happening. By the time they turned to help, Yashamaru was already down.
"Reiki's fighting style is... unique," Morishita muttered, surprised. One moment Reiki was aiding him with healing; the next, he was ambushing the enemy with brutal efficiency.
"You look like you could use some healing too. Don't worry—I'm a medical ninja. I only want to treat you," Reiki said to the Sand Ninja as he disappeared again into the shadows.
The Sand Ninja, already struggling against Morishita, now faced an unseen opponent waiting to strike. It became nearly impossible to focus on fighting Morishita alone, and soon they, too, were defeated.
"We need to move before reinforcements from the camp arrive," Morishita said, turning to Reiki with a grin. Fighting with Reiki by his side was a unique experience. Not only did Reiki heal him and supply medicine, but his stealth attacks were also nearly impossible to detect. It was a rare combination.
"Sir Morishita, we can keep going. Here, take this intermediate recovery potion and stamina potion," Reiki said, handing over vials. "I'll treat the defeated ninjas and seal their chakra. After that, they won't pose any further threat."
"Ah, so that's why you asked for so many sealing scrolls," Morishita realized. Reiki had handed him a stack of scrolls before they set out, which now made perfect sense.
When the Sunagakure reinforcements arrived, they were greeted by an unexpected sight: Morishita sitting calmly while Reiki attended to their injured comrades.
"You're from Sunagakure? Good timing. Your comrades were attacked, and we were passing by on a mission, so we helped treat them," Reiki said without pausing. "Quick, bring over the wounded."
The newcomers hesitated but saw that Reiki was indeed treating the fallen. Unsure but willing to help, they began moving the injured to him. Tamu, their leader, finally stepped forward.
"Aren't you Konoha's ninjas? Who attacked our comrades earlier? Did you see?" Tamu asked.
"I did," Reiki said, pointing at Morishita. "It was him."
"What?" Tamu's confusion was palpable. Wasn't this medical ninja just helping them?
Reiki smiled, showing his bright teeth. "You look troubled. Maybe you're sick too."
Before Tamu could react, Yashamaru, regaining consciousness but with his chakra sealed, shouted weakly, "They attacked us! What are you waiting for? Fight!"
"It's true—Konoha ninjas attacked us!" Tamu called, summoning his puppet, but Reiki was faster. A chakra blade severed the puppet's strings, and the battle began anew.
Morishita unleashed a wind-style jutsu to support Reiki, and the two coordinated seamlessly. Within half an hour, the reinforcements had been subdued.
"I told you, you need treatment, didn't I?" Reiki said as he approached the fallen Tamu, who glared before coughing up blood and passing out.
