As night fell, Sarutobi Hiruzen returned briefly. Hearing that Reiki had woken up and was on the mend, he didn't disturb him. Instead, he left a message for the team to take care of Reiki first and then quietly left.
"I understand," Reiki nodded, feigning a look of appreciation. What a joke—Sarutobi Hiruzen barely cared about his own son anymore, yet he wanted to make it seem like he was concerned for Reiki? How could Reiki not be "moved"?
"Alright, Reiki," Wu Zuo said after observing his expression. "If you're really grateful to Hokage-sama, then focus on recovering. Rest well; I'll check on you tomorrow."
With that, Wu Zuo gave Reiki a reassuring pat on the shoulder and left the room. Watching him go, Reiki slowly sat up, leaning against the headboard. Sarutobi Hiruzen often played his cards well, but Reiki knew him too well to be genuinely moved. It was time to apply a little pressure of his own.
With a faint smirk, Reiki began refining his chakra, planning his next move.
Meanwhile, in Asuma's room...
"Hurry, Master Asuma's health is worsening!"
"His internal bleeding is getting worse, and his bodily functions are declining rapidly. We need treatment immediately!"
"Quick, inform Lord Hokage and prepare the medicines to stabilize him. We need to start chakra infusions to keep his body steady."
The medical team bustled around as Asuma's condition deteriorated further, blood beginning to trickle from his mouth and nose.
In the Hokage's office...
"Hokage-sama, Master Asuma's condition has worsened," a medical ninja reported urgently.
But before he could finish, Sarutobi Hiruzen had already vanished, heading straight to the scene.
Within moments, he arrived at Tsunade's courtyard, accompanied by Sarutobi Biwako. Her anger from before had faded, replaced with a look of anguish. She had already lost one son; seeing her remaining child so close to death was unbearable.
Outside the room, Sarutobi Hiruzen watched the medical team working desperately, his heart heavy with grief. But he knew he couldn't intervene. Wu Zuo and the others were the best medical ninjas in the village, using all available equipment and resources to help Asuma.
"Lord Hokage, didn't you say Reiki could treat Asuma?" Sarutobi Biwako asked, watching as Asuma coughed up blood. She turned to Hiruzen with a furious expression. "Where is he?"
"Biwako, right now—"
"Don't give me excuses. I've already lost one son, and I won't let anything happen to Asuma!" she interrupted. "Sarutobi Hiruzen, do you even understand what it means to lose a child?"
Sarutobi Biwako's emotions boiled over, her patience worn thin. Losing her youngest son within such a short time felt unbearable.
"Reiki's body isn't fit for—" Hiruzen started.
"My son is dying, Sarutobi Hiruzen! Do you even understand the gravity of that?"
"Enough." A calm voice interrupted. Reiki's voice came through the doorway.
"Reiki? Are you sure your body is—"
"Don't worry," Reiki replied softly. "While I can't cure Asuma entirely right now, I can at least stabilize him." He dragged his "weary" body into the room, the other medical ninjas stepping aside to let him work.
Reiki seated himself on the floor, activating a barrier to enhance focus and privacy, then began treatment. Seeing this, the medical ninjas retreated to Sarutobi Hiruzen's side.
"Don't worry, Hokage-sama," Wu Zuo reassured him. "If Reiki says he can stabilize Asuma, then there's no doubt he will."
"It's just... Reiki's body..." Wu Zuo shook his head.
Hiruzen nodded, his worry evident. "Wu Zuo, gather the best medicine for Reiki and bring it to him. If he needs anything, make sure he gets it."
With that, Sarutobi Hiruzen turned and left. Though Sarutobi Biwako wanted to argue, she knew Hiruzen's responsibilities weighed heavily. Resigned, she followed Asuma's treatment closely.
The next morning, the barrier dissipated, and Reiki emerged from Asuma's room.
"Wu Zuo, I'll need some qi and blood replenishing medicine in my room," he requested. "Asuma's condition is stabilized for now, but I'll need a full rest before I can treat him fully. Otherwise, his body won't stand a chance at complete recovery."
As he walked toward his room, Reiki added, "By the way, Hokage-sama's health could use some attention. I'd advise checking on him soon."
Sarutobi Biwako, hearing this, quickly left the courtyard and hurried to the Hokage's office.
Inside the Hokage's office...
"What? Something's wrong with my health too?" Sarutobi Hiruzen asked, startled. He stood up immediately upon hearing Sarutobi Biwako's report.
"Reiki said so himself," she replied. "Please, get checked. I don't want to see both you and Asuma bedridden."
"I understand." Hiruzen sighed. "Go back and rest, Biwako. Asuma is in stable condition, and I'll handle my health."
Although she wanted to say more, Sarutobi Biwako could only nod and return to Asuma's side.
As she left, Sarutobi Hiruzen's expression darkened. First, it had been Sarutobi Shinnosuke, then Asuma, and now… himself. It was becoming clear that someone was targeting his family.
Who could be responsible?
Hiruzen opened his desk drawer and took out an intelligence report. He scanned its contents, his expression hardening.
"Send for Orochimaru," he ordered the ANBU guard.
The ANBU nodded and disappeared through the window. Sarutobi Hiruzen approached the window and took a long drag from his cigarette, his mind now on high alert.
