Chapter 85: The Kidnapping
The Triskelion was going about its normal routine, but the atmosphere at SHIELD headquarters changed dramatically when the news arrived. Tony Stark, the billionaire genius and head of Stark Industries, had been kidnapped by the terrorist organization known as the 10 Rings. Fury, always with his unwavering expression, walked around the briefing room with a determination that kept everyone on their toes.
Omega, already one of the most respected teams in SHIELD, was called in quickly. John, as always at the forefront, led his operators, their faces serious and ready for action. They had faced dangerous situations before, but Stark's kidnapping had global implications. Stark Industries' defense technologies were crucial to the security of countless countries, and in the wrong hands, could mean chaos.
At the briefing, Fury wasted no time.
"Stark was kidnapped during a weapons presentation in Afghanistan," he began, his eyes roaming the team. — 10 Rings is behind this, and we know they have a well-hidden compound in the mountains. What we don't know is Stark's exact location. We need you to get there, find him, and bring him back. Alive. Got it?
John nodded, his thoughts already focused on the mission. The team was prepared, as always. They had already handled several operations in hostile territories, but rescuing one of the richest and most influential men in the world under these circumstances was something else.
"We're ready, Director," John replied firmly. "We'll locate Stark."
Fury handed a tablet to Omega 2, who immediately began examining the satellite images and the terrain.
"There are many hidden caves and passages in these mountains," Omega 2 muttered as he examined the data. "If 10 Rings took him there, it'll be like looking for a needle in a haystack."
Fury crossed his arms, his gaze serious.
"That's why I'm sending you. You're the best we've got. You'll find him." — He then turned to John. — The Quinjet is ready. Depart in one hour.
In the air, flying over the arid mountains of Afghanistan, the tension was palpable. The team was silent, adjusting their equipment as the Quinjet headed toward the infiltration point. John watched the terrain through the window, his mind analyzing every variable. The mountains below were treacherous, and he knew time was against them. The longer they took, the greater the chances that Stark would be moved or even killed.
"Omega 1, we're approaching the infiltration point," the pilot's voice echoed over the intercom.
John turned to the team.
"Everyone ready?" he asked, more out of habit than necessity. He knew his team was always ready.
"Always, boss," Omega 3 replied, adjusting his rifle.
The Quinjet hovered over a safe area, and one by one, the team members lowered themselves down ropes to the arid ground. They moved like shadows, in tactical formation, their eyes scanning the surroundings for any sign of hostility.
"Omega 2," John called into the radio, "we need a read on the area. Any clues as to where Stark might be?"
Omega 2 scanned his tablet, using the satellite data and the known coordinates of the 10 Rings bases.
"We have several caves to the north. That's the most likely place."
"Okay. We're moving north. Watch out for traps and patrols. They might be expecting reinforcements."
With that, the team headed toward the mountains, moving with precision. The heat was intense, the sun beating down on the rocky terrain, but John and his team kept their focus. With every step, they knew they were closer to Stark or something worse.
After a few hours of marching, they reached a series of caves. The place was desolate and too quiet, which only increased the tension. John raised his hand, signaling for the team to stop.
"Something's wrong," he muttered, his eyes fixed on the cave entrances ahead. "No guards. No movement. They should be guarding the place."
"Could be a trap," Omega 5 suggested, his eyes scanning the terrain.
John nodded. "Proceed with caution. If Stark's here, they won't give him up easily."
The team split up, moving around the caverns. John led the charge, his breathing steady and his senses sharp. They checked one cave after another, but the place looked abandoned. Scraps of equipment, a few discarded weapons, and vehicle marks indicated that the place had been recently evacuated. John frowned. They were close, but they were too late.
"Omega 1 to team," John called into the radio. "Nothing here. Looks like they've already moved."
Disappointment was evident on the team members' faces as they regrouped at the entrance to the last cave.
"Do we have any clue where they went?" — Omega 6 asked, examining the tracks on the ground.
Omega 2 looked at the tablet, analyzing the closest coordinates.
"There's a clue. Vehicles left here a little while ago. But the direction leads deep into the mountains, with no other known bases nearby."
John took a deep breath, feeling frustration build. They were close, but Stark had slipped through his fingers.
"Fury won't like this," he muttered. "Let's do a final sweep and head back to the Quinjet. We don't have any more time to waste."
The team completed their sweep of the site, finding only discarded equipment and a few vague clues as to where the terrorists might have taken Stark. When they finally returned to the Quinjet, silence reigned.
"Report, Omega 1?" Fury's voice sounded over the intercom as they were on their way.
John pressed the communicator on his wrist and answered:
"Site clear. Base abandoned. Stark was moved before we arrived. We tried to track it, but the leads are few. We need more intelligence."
Fury remained silent for a few moments. The anger in his voice was palpable when he answered.
"Understood." Return to base. We will reassess the situation and redouble our tracking efforts.
John closed the comm and leaned back in his seat. He knew Stark was still alive somewhere, but he also knew that time was running out. Finding Tony Stark would be a priority for SHIELD and global security. But for now, this mission had been a failure.
As the Quinjet streaked toward base, Omega prepared for its next move.
Chapter 86: The Birth of Iron Man
It was an ordinary morning at the Triskelion, but John could feel something was about to change. There was an unusual commotion in the halls of SHIELD, whispered conversations between agents, and a buzz he couldn't quite identify. He and his team were returning from a series of training exercises when the communicator on John's wrist vibrated. It was a direct message from Fury.
"Hawke, come to my office now."
John raised an eyebrow, finding the urgency in Fury's voice strange. He quickly said goodbye to his team and headed straight for the elevator. As he went up to the boardroom floor, he couldn't help but wonder what could be happening. The last time he had seen Fury this serious was when they received the news of Tony Stark's kidnapping.
When he reached Fury's office, the door was already ajar, and he walked in without knocking. Fury was standing, staring out the large window, his hands clasped behind his back. Beside him stood Coulson, his expression calmly professional, but also visibly attentive.
"John," Fury said, turning to him. "We have news about Stark. He's been rescued."
The revelation took John by surprise. After the failed mission in Afghanistan, he had feared the worst.
"Rescued?" John repeated, advancing to the center of the room. "How was he found?"
Coulson stepped forward, handing John a tablet with the images of Stark being rescued by a military helicopter.
"The US military located him," Coulson explained. "He managed to escape captivity and was found in the desert. But there's more, John. Much more."
John frowned, looking at Coulson curiously.
"While he was imprisoned, Stark built something… a suit. Something he used to escape. It's not just an ordinary suit. He equipped it with weapons and advanced technology. This man wasn't just surviving, he was creating a high-tech weapon."
John looked back at Fury, absorbing the information. He knew Stark by reputation, the billionaire playboy and genius. But this was something beyond what he had expected.
"So, he managed to use this thing to escape?" John asked, still processing what he had heard.
"Yes," Fury replied, with a subtle smile. "Stark is not just a genius inventor. He is more ingenious than anyone could have imagined. The suit he created allowed him to escape from the 10 Rings terrorists. And now… well, the story has taken an unexpected turn."
John tilted his head, waiting for the next point.
"We have another problem now," Coulson said, interrupting. "Stark is going to give a press conference soon. SHIELD has instructed him to follow a script we prepared for him, something that will keep the focus away from his activities during the kidnapping. We need him to keep the suit and what he really went through secret."
Fury nodded, adding:
"We wanted to keep things under control. But we know Stark." He never does what he's told.
John crossed his arms, realizing where this conversation was going.
"Do you think he'll reveal everything?"
"Exactly," Coulson said, looking at John with a resigned expression. "Stark is unpredictable. He's already straying from the script we gave him, and there's not much we can do about it at this point."
As they spoke, the monitor on the wall behind Fury flickered, showing a live feed of Stark's press conference. The conference room was packed, eager reporters with their cameras and microphones pointed at the man who was now the focus of all attention.
Stark, dressed in an impeccable suit, looked relaxed, with the kind of confidence that only he could exude in a situation like this. He was surrounded by aides.
Stark began to speak, at first following the prepared script, thanking the military, mentioning the support he had received and how he was focused on rebuilding his life after the traumatic kidnapping. But then, something changed. The air in the room seemed to be tense as he paused dramatically, looking directly at the audience of journalists.
"Some of you may be wondering what happened to me in captivity," Stark began, his tone more serious than before. "And how I escaped."
"The truth is…" Stark looked at the journalists with a slight tilt of his head. "I am Iron Man."
The press room erupted in murmurs and gasps of shock. Reporters began shouting questions, cameras clicking like crazy to capture Stark's reaction. Meanwhile, at the Triskelion, Fury rolled his eyes and shook his head, as if he had already known this was coming.
"I knew he wouldn't follow the script," he muttered, crossing his arms.
John chuckled softly, watching the scene.
"He is Stark, after all. I don't know why you expected him to follow orders."
"That's the thing," Coulson said resignedly. "Stark never follows the rules. And now, the whole world will know that he built a advanced military aje. This changes everything."
Fury looked at John with a firm gaze.
"This changes more than anything. Now that Stark has declared himself 'Iron Man', he's going to attract the attention of a lot of people. The government, terrorist organizations, and even our oldest enemies. We need to closely monitor how this unfolds, and we have to make sure SHIELD is prepared for what's coming."
John nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation.
"Do you want Omega to be on standby?" he asked, knowing that his team would be one of the first to be called in case of any emerging crisis.
"Exactly," Fury replied. "Omega may be needed if the situation with Stark gets out of hand. We need to prepare for the worst-case scenario."
John turned to leave, but before he left the room, he looked back at Fury.
"Do you really think Stark is ready for what comes next? He's in the eye of a storm right now." Fury paused, thinking for a moment before answering.
"Stark is never truly ready, but he is the kind of man who adapts. And frankly, we're going to need him to adapt fast. The world has changed today. And he needs to rise to the occasion."
With that, John left the room, knowing that this was just the beginning of something much bigger. Tony Stark had just changed the rules of the game, and he and SHIELD would have to hurry to keep up with the new challenges that would come with the emergence of Iron Man.
Chapter 87: The Green Monster
It was a calm morning at the Triskelion, the SHIELD base was relatively quiet. John Hawke was reviewing reports from Omega's latest mission when he received a direct message from Nick Fury.
"Hawke, come to my office. We have an urgent situation."
John sighed and got up from his desk. Ever since Iron Man showed up, it seemed like things were getting more and more complicated. But Fury's voice on the communicator indicated that this was more serious than usual.
He quickly made his way through the hallways to Fury's office. When he entered, Fury was standing in front of a large monitoring screen, with recorded images of massive destruction in a city. Buildings were collapsing, cars were thrown around like toys, and chaos reigned in the streets. Next to Fury was Hill, with a hard expression, and a few other SHIELD agents were watching the scene.
"John, I need you to look at this," Fury said bluntly.
Fury pressed a button on the remote control and the images began to move, revealing a shocking scene. In broad daylight, two enormous creatures were fighting in the middle of a densely populated urban area.
One of them was a giant green monster, with muscles that seemed to explode with strength, while the other creature, even more grotesque, had yellow skin, protruding bones and a truly monstrous appearance. John approached the screen, his eyes fixed on the images.
"What the hell is this?" he asked, his tone serious, unable to look away from the destruction that those creatures were causing.
Fury crossed his arms, his jaw clenched. "That, John, is what happens when scientists try to mess with something they shouldn't. The green man you see... is the result of a failed attempt to recreate the super soldier serum."
John's eyes widened for a moment. "Super soldier? Who tried to recreate the serum?"
"A scientist named Dr. Bruce Banner," Fury explained. — He was conducting research related to the serum, but something went terribly wrong. Instead of creating a new super soldier, he transformed into the monster you see, known as the Hulk.
John watched the Hulk, the sheer fury and brutality of his attacks were impressive. He remembered old reports of the super soldier serum project and how extremely difficult it was to control its effects. But this... this was something far beyond what he could have imagined.
— And the other monster? — John asked, as he watched the Hulk violently collide with what seemed to be an even more brutal opponent.
Maria Hill, who had been silent until that moment, answered:
— This is Emil Blonsky, also known as the Abomination. He was a special operations soldier, but after being subjected to an experiment similar to Banner's, he transformed into this creature. The problem is that, unlike Banner, Blonsky completely lost control and began to wreak havoc. What you are seeing is a battle between two monsters.
John watched as the Hulk grabbed the Abomination, slamming him hard into a building that collapsed on top of him. The destruction these two creatures were causing was unimaginable.
"Where is this happening?" John asked, the tension in his voice palpable.
"In Harlem, New York," Fury replied. "The battle is over. Banner managed to stop Blonsky, but not without causing major damage to the city. The Hulk is uncontrollable when he's in this state. And although he won the fight, he's a walking time bomb."**
John looked at Fury, processing what this meant.
"So Dr. Banner is the Hulk?" he asked, his mind already working through the implications of all this.
Fury nodded slowly.
"Exactly. When he gets angry or under extreme stress, he turns into that thing. He tried to isolate himself, to hide from the world, but circumstances ended up leading to this fight in Harlem. Now he's missing again." John was silent for a few seconds, trying to understand what all this meant for the future.
"Do you think Banner is a threat?" he finally asked.
Fury paused, looking at the screen, where the images stopped with the Hulk roaring before disappearing away from the cameras.
"He may be a threat, but he may also be the key to something bigger. The problem is that the Hulk is not something we can control. Banner, on the other hand, is one of the most brilliant scientists in the world. We need him, but we also need to be very careful with him."
Maria Hill added:
"SHIELD will continue to monitor him closely. We have satellites tracking any possible sign of Hulk activity. But for now, he is at large. We do not know where he is."
John exhaled slowly. He knew all too well the dangers of trying to manipulate something as powerful as the super soldier serum. He himself was proof that power came with a price, and the risks were high. But what happened to Banner was something far beyond what he had ever imagined.
"So, what's the plan?" John asked, looking directly at Fury.
"For now, we're keeping our distance. We're working on other solutions to deal with beings of this caliber. But if Banner shows up again, especially as the Hulk, we need to be ready to intervene."
Fury paused, turning his attention to John with a piercing gaze.
"And you, Hawke… If the Hulk is an imminent threat, you and your Omega team can be called upon. We need someone capable of holding the line against something like this. And with your training and skills… Well, you might be our only chance if the situation gets worse."
John nodded slowly, aware of the gravity of what Fury was asking. Facing something like the Hulk would be a suicide mission for any ordinary person. But he wasn't an ordinary person. He was a super soldier. However, even he knew that fighting the Hulk would be the greatest challenge of his life.
"Stay ready, John. The world is changing fast, and the Hulk is just the beginning." — Fury added, his voice heavy with seriousness.
John stared at the frozen images of the Hulk, etching the monster's image into his mind. He knew that if he were called upon for this mission, it would be a battle that could define his life and perhaps even the future of the world.
"We're ready for whatever comes, Fury," John replied confidently. "But I hope we don't have to face that green monster any time soon."
Fury smiled slightly, a tired smile.
"Me too, John. Me too."
With that, John turned to leave the room, his thoughts still focused on the images of the destruction in Harlem. He knew that, although the Hulk was a danger, Bruce Banner was a man who needed help, and if he were ever called upon to face that monster, he would do whatever it took to protect the innocent, even if it meant fighting something as brutal as the Hulk.
When John left the office, the weight of the situation still weighed heavily on his shoulders. The world of superhumans was growing, and he knew that this was just the tip of the iceberg. More challenges would come, and he needed to be prepared to face them, no matter how impossible the mission seemed.
